It's more carrier / the dealing person dependent. I received a few items through Delhi about a year or two ago. I was charged duty.
 
@tech.addict: So any specific carriers we can look forward to if trying to evade customs ? Via SnS it's invariably custom-ed nowadays, and that too for god-knows-what values. DHL/Fedex are also stamped customs, but with the appropriate duty. Any other carrier which can pass through this ?

There are not much options. You can try ICCworld/Ishopinternational. But customs has issued a circular to the courier companies asking strict compliance to duty free or gift consignments. No big courier will go into the hassle of getting your consignments cleared duty free. If it is found later by Customs that they skipped duty, they will be penalized.
You can avoid duty by using USPS/EMS. But you can not import items for personal use worth more 2000 Rs through postal service in India.
 
@tech.addict: The gift consignments are still a mystery to me. Thing is I pay on Amazon using my friend's CC, so it has his billing address but the delivery address is mine. Technically speaking, it is a gift since the billing and delivery addresses aren't the same. But customs are still charged ?

ppobox is unreliable. They have agent to clear their parcel. They simply clear all the item together (Custom is swipped, roundfigure). where as sns is concern they are legal, and complete all formalities. I am using sns and ppo. sns protection service is good.

My latest experince with ppo is very bad. My s3 reached to ny hub on 2nd november. I got a mail on 6th your item is dispatched nyhub on 6th. today is 17th, no update yet. i am calling daily. They have answers we are investigating. i also got one more answer its in custom due to improper invoice it is held in custom. Sometime they ask me that do you have checked for insurance.

Guys, I agree sometime sns charge bit high in custom or delay. But they have coverage upto 2500$. we can get full refund of invoice, in case of ppo. I have no idea what they will give. Somewhere on there site it is return maximum they give is upto 200$ WTF. I dont know when will i see my s3.
 
SNS is not presenting the invoices sent to them to customs. PERIOD. It is very very clear from Bill of Entry we get.
It's your choice whether you want to continue with them or not. Asking them to preset the invoice or asking them for refund in case of excess duty due to non presentation of invoice is nothing more than BANGING YOUR HEAD AGAINST THE WALL. Sp take it or leave it.
I have also observed lots of items from sns members missing after introduction of "PROTECTION SERVICE" for which no clear guidelines are available.

Other than that I find SnS largely good.
 
Atleast in my case the customs receipt clearly showed the invoice amount I sent them for 4 shipments. If they are not doing it isn't something illegal. Its up-to the buyer now to decide whether to use them or not.

People who are shipping through sns are looking for best prices as these are the guys who charge actual customs. Other services like GEB which charge higher fixed price always charge more than actual customs along with profit. You are free to pay a higher price there and know the landing cost ahead. With SnS customs is charged at the whim of the officer and they clearly show you the receipt. You are bound to pay that and if you find it wrong its your duty to follow-up with the customs office to rectify it (good luck with that) and non SnS.
 
i got one S3 through SnS during the diwali week and i forget to send the actual invoice.. as i was in holiday mood :) SnS valued at 5000 and i've been charged around 120 as customs :D
 
"evading customs" is illegal and no shipper is going to do that for you.

forget them , use amazon same are availble on Amazon for $105 and your website is giving it at $99 + $10 shipping .
Shop on Amazon for $125 and get them cheap duty paid

It didnt come free :p Lost good amount on currency conversion refunds , actual and volumetric weight which was today itself and extra large duties but thanks anyways
 
Is it possible to ship a camping tools and knifes ? I want a hunting knife and multi tool knife its too expensive here in india
