I think they are lying to you.....the 4TB HDDs I mentioned are Seagate Backup Plus External HardDisks. The customs was 500 each.
This is one headache with importing stuff in India...you never can be sure about how much customs will be charged.:(
 
^ Importing used phones is illegal in India (at-least the last time I checked it was).
If the package/invoice mentions "used" then it will get flagged in customs - you may be charged upto 42% of the invoive/local retail value.
7% of local retail/invoice value is the customs for new phones. Shipping can vary between $26 - 32 depending on your choices and account status.

I have a query about amazon global buy.
Say i want to buy a product which costs 100$ on amazon (along with India sipping and customs) and say today's conversion rate as per google is 62 Rs then in an "ideal" situation the cost would be 100*62 = 6200 Rs. But it won't be like this i am sure.
So if anyone has got products from amazon.com using their global shipping and paid in Indian rupees, did you use their own currency converter ? If yes then how are their charges (how much premium per dollar above the rate of that day ) ? I believe if you use the currency converter then there won't be any charges placed by the credit card company since the transaction was in INR.

Amazon currency conversion charges are always higher than VISA/MasterCard + Markup.
If 1 USD = 62 INR today. Amazon will charge you at 65 probably to add the markup fees etc.
You are better off buying with your CC markup rate of 3.5% - works out cheaper

So 3.5% markup of credit card means i pay in USD only and whatever extra i have to pay is only to the credit card, so if CC charges 3.5% does that mean if amazon charges 100$ then it will be 100$*62 = 6200 Rs + 3.5% of 6200 = 6417 Rs ?
With amazon currency converter it will be say 100*65 = 6500 Rs ?
 
Yes...If you are buying something for $100 say -
CC Rate: 62 * 100 + 3.5%
Amazon : 65 * 100
Also one other thing to note - in case you get a refund on something - the prevailing conversion rate on that day will be applicable...

If you have Canara Bank CC you can get the lowest markup conversion 2%...Just FYI
 
yes this is right... Issue comes when u want a refund.... I lost 2k bucks in 2 transactions due to the f**king commissions.
I paid 131$ in the first instance and was charged around 8500 (63 was the prevailing rate) from my Standard chartered bank.
I then opted for a refund around 15 days after - and I got @ 60 (prevailing rate was 62.1 or something)...so around 7900...losing 600 bucks straight:(
Had I opted for Amazon currency converter I wouldn't have lost a single dime.

Just highlighting a Pro of amazon converter.
