"All your data belongs to us" - Whatsapp is now completely Facebooked

Apple won’t do that. Everybody will start hating apple. Apple shows their power only to small developers or ban those apps which will stop creating revenue for Apple due to the change like it did with Epic
Hence, it would be interesting to see how it pans out. Apple will be termed a hypocrite if they let an app violate the policy and stay on the store and they will get brickbats if they remove the app.

On the other hand, FB is already suffering with the tracking limits on iOS as nearly 90% have opted out across the world. Further loss of data gathering on iOS would be a huge blow for them.

May be it will force FB to concede or otherwise they could release two different apps and make the old one incompatible which is probably the easiest thing to do.

Apple doesn’t care about hypocrisy. They removed the charger in all iPhones under the guise of environment saving; they got negative reviews from so many people and still didn’t care. Only when Brazil passed a law, they started shipping iPhones with charger only in Brazil

I downloaded WhatsApp again on iOS and while a couple of days ago, the Agree & Continue page mentioned that the new policy will be automatically applied from May 15, now there is only a link to the policy from July 2020 and not to Jan 2021 with no mention of the new policy.

Seems WhatsApp is already climbing down.

Had WhatsApp passed it on as an information about change in privacy policy and not explicitly ask for consent, this issue wouldn’t have been this much bigger. most users would have ignored that message and would have carried on with their chatting.

What's the new WhatsApp update? I keep getting a prompt to update it and that new changes will take effect soon.

What the hell. So they are basically coercing us to agree to their terms or we won't be able to use their app anymore huh. This is so screwed up. But this coming from fb doesn't surprise me. If only my contacts use Signal or something then I could also move there.

Man I'd be happy to get a paid messaging app at this point without all the bs.
whatspp is going to a useless shit if one dont accept their policy, they wont propt user anymore but will disable notification & later send message function within 2-3 week.
It will became app which will send your private data secretly to mark bhaiya in either case.

Its best time to first unregister you mobile and then uninstall whatsapp.

As an alternative, we have iMessages if using iOS, i never feel like im missing out anything after i ditched whats app in January. Rather a much peaceful life.
Those who are close and matter to me will be anyways connected over voice calls.

I'm using Signal for my non iOS friends, where 90% friends are already using it.
Signal has two downside - voice calls take much much longer to connect and is slow compared to telegram & whatsapp.

Frankly speaking, Apple was a hypocrite already when they decide what you want. The current stance taken by them on various issues and then reversing if there is a backlash but no monetary loss just smacks of doublespeak.

Facebook on the other hand - its clearly telling you what they plan to do with your data on FB. Accept or stop using. I decided the latter.

Coming to WhatsApp - they could always go back to a paid model. It might work for them as well, with WA being so ingrained in our countries userbase.

The other alternatives - Telegram is an option - many use for ahem uses mainly (piracy, pr0n and what not) and Signal should have a proper source of funding else might face issues.

I never believed in Apple's "privacy" right from the start.

One video posted above said that Signal was recently funded with $100M. That and their crypto.

I feel that relying on free services is doomed from the start - at some point, inevitably, what FB is doing to WA is going to come to pass to nearly all free services

A general blog, but it is to highlight the fact that not informing users about changes in data handling is illegal and WhatsApp would have been sued for it. If they could have done it silently, they would have.

Apple rightly got sued for not disclosing the performance clamping they did for old batteries which incidentally lead to better transparency. They can however do what they like for any new product launches because they come with their own T&C that you accept when you purchase and activate the device. WhatsApp will never migrate to a paid model because FB earns a lot more from selling your data within a year than they would if you are a lifetime paid subscriber. Telegram is a far worse alternative as it has no E2E encryption by default and is cloud-based with proprietary libraries, implying Telegram can access all your data if they want to.

Donation is a valid model as evident by Wikipedia but it requires a dedicated user base that is willing to donate in proportion to the costs incurred for adding new features which is certainly causing Signal problems at present. However, an open-source app being run by a foundation is still a better bet that an app being run by a megalomaniac.

Well, even Signal failed to "not be evil". Element matrix anybody?

Integration of MobileCoin is undoubtedly not the best thing that has happened to Signal and Moxie certainly has vested interests in choosing it. However, it seems crypto integration is the only other way to get a regular revenue stream for small companies as is also evident by Brave and its BAT integration. Fortunately, these are all optional features that don't impact the core functionality of the app, yet.

Government asks WhatsApp to withdraw or revise new policy, gives May 25 deadline

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has asked messaging platform WhatsApp to withdraw or revise its new privacy policy. The government has warned action against the firm and says “various options” available to it under Indian law.

The Facebook-owned company has given a deadline till May 25 to respond to the concerns raised by the government.
