Gigabit switch to upgrade my LAN

It is for home use. I have relatives coming every now and then. They do access my wifi and I am worried if any of their infected smartphone tries to invade into my devices.
Unfortunately the only way to achieve that is if your AP supports multiple SSID and isolation. (or your network stack supports VLANs - which I doubt the Jio router will)
I don't know about the specific model of D Link AP you have - your best bet short of an upgrade would be to check the manual for the same

if you dont fancy ddwrt/operwrt/ merlin ,than asus , in prime sale it was under 5k , but you can try in open market.

it will give you true gigabit speeds ,mesh wifi with other asus router ,small ftp/samba/media server/privileges to access those folders usb 2.0 based ,OPENVPN , dual band and there were few more.Asus also allowed to cre

to test connectivity within LAN user IPERF/JPERF over internet as well but you need to have valid ports open and Public IP

@burntwingzZz Thank you for your suggestion. I am satisfied with the D-Link Router and I just paid 1.7K for it. I don't think it's worth spending 5K on a AC router right now. Will wait for decent 6E routers to get cheaper and will upgrade after a few years.

@TinTinSnowy How stable has the dir1260 been until now? Any loss of connection issues?
Stable. No Connection Loss. I have been running Android VMs over night on few devices connected to the ethernet ports on the router and would have known if there was any downtime. I also did some gaming yesterday night over wifi and it was stable.

One suggestion will be to disable the smart connect feature (combined ssid for 2.4ghz & 5ghz). Devices some times connect to 2.4ghz even when they support 5ghz. Better to maintain 2 seperate ssid for 2.4ghz and 5ghz.

@TinTinSnowy

I just got my dir1260.

Did a speed test from apple tv to my Synology NAS.

I'm getting speeds in the range of 200-250Mbps.

Shouldn't it be a bit higher considering both have gigabit ports and are using ethernet

A gigabit port will top out at 100-120 Megabytes (or around 1000 megabits) per second, so if you're getting double that through a single gigabit port that's super impressive :-o (and that the port is actually a 2.5G port)

I was getting 75-90 Mbps on my older dir816 which did not have a gigabit port.

so, your saying 100-120 on gigabit port is perplexing to me.
How are you testing the speeds? 200-250 Mb/s (20-25 MB/s) is certainly less.

Are you sure both the ports are Gigabit? on the Apple TV and your NAS. Please share the model number for both. Have you also tested any other device? Also please post the speed test results screenshot.

@TheCoolerPlayer probably got confused with MB/s and Mb/s.

Apple tv 4k is latest 2021 model, Synology DS218.

I don't have another device to test.

Can you verify the same with another CAT cable? It looks like many others are also facing the same issue with Apple TV device for low speeds on SMB file transfers.

People are using FTP/Webdav to reach the max speeds on similar clients (Apple TV and NAS). Probably some overhead on the Apple TV device. SMB on Windows Clients is reaching full speeds for me. I have not tested on any other device.

Yup. SMB was the culprit here.

I ran a speed test on infuse via Plex server running on my Synology NAS. Getting speeds above 900 Mbps!

I was speed testing via SMB shares previously.

SMB reduces speeds by 70%. Insanity!

Practically speaking for streaming 200Mbps will be fine even for 100GB UHD Blu ray remuxes, I think.

Edit : I'm having some connection issues on my oculus headset if I use static address. Lose connection every 15-30 minutes. Switching from static seems to solve it

@colors6 I was also suprised to know that Apple TV have such poor performance for SMB. Windows clients have no trouble hitting full speeds over SMB. I may test with M1 Mac Mini soon to see if this persist across Apple devices.

No idea about the Oculus Headset. If it's connected via WiFi then do make sure you are using seperate SSIDs for 2.4Ghz and 5Gz. Smart connect may create trouble on some clients. Nice to know that everything sorted for you in the end.

@TinTinSnowy I'm trying to ditch Plex and move to infuse as it doesn't require a server.

The problem I'm facing now is which protocol to use between apple tv and Synology.

Apple has abandoned AFP. Can't decide which protocol to choose between NFS and SMB. Both provide a speed of around 300Mbps. I don't know why Plex server provides 3 times speed of 900Mbps on Synology while NFS/SMB provide only 250-300 Mbps. Any suggestions on what protocol to use in infuse?

Don’t overthink it. Infuse will play practically anything you throw at it without stuttering or buffering even on SMB.
Just stick to the defaults and you will be fine
