User Review I switched to M1 Macbook Air

This is the year which will be remembered as the year of the M1 Chip.
Apple has taken its time and decimated the competition!!
Intel and AMD have to go back to the blackboard again and bring in their A Game or its the END GAME!!
I was a hybrid windows lover and experimented with a lot of devices but the things I do is best done on this puny macbook air!!
I am mighty impressed.
Just wish it had touch screen!!

M1 iPad Pro
M1 Macbook AIr
M1 Macbook Pro
M1 iMac

Lot of talks over reddit about this hub issue, there people does say it bricked with apple's own adapter and the 3rd party ones sold in apple website as well. So its not exactly no-name hubs.. but the scary thing for me is.. some one reported using x1 type c charger directly without any hub also bricked :( which is exact one im using now!!!

You will find all sorts of threads related to PD charging bricking pretty much any popular laptop there is if you go looking for it on reddit.
Vast majority of such cases are related to usage of non certified PD chargers and esp pass through hubs .
What a lot of people don't realize is that PD charging is not like old school USB charging where voltage was fixed at 5V - and it was really easy to get away with using any no name cheap charger you can use for pretty much anything.

PD chargers will negotiate a voltage between 5/9/12/15/20V depending on the capabilities reported by the connected device - which also means that the charger needs to be bug free in its implementation of the negotiation protocols.
Stick to certified chargers/ cables / docks/ dongles with USB C - regardless of the device in question and you will be absolutely fine.

Additionally, with 11.4 update, the Mac have an additional check to restrict the negotiated voltage to lower values if the connected charger is a non compliant variant (i.e. totally generic, does not affect good PD chargers regardless of brand) so that acts as an additional safeguard

In the off case the power supply module has a manufacturing issue to begin with, it won't wait to fail for a year anyway :p

Also, if it helps, I use my MBA (as well as other USB C/ thunderbolt devices) with a whole host of chargers regularly (The original charger, a bunch of Ikea 30W chargers, Lenovo 65W charger, charging from my Benq PD monitor USB C connector, a HP Thunderbolt dock , a Dell Thunderbolt dock and even a RAVPower PD certified power bank) and have had no problems.
Various Cables in use as well but again all certified cables (the cables too have negotiations chips on them) i.e. either the OEM cable or Amazonbasics

I however absolutely do not use any no name/ whote labeled imports when it comes to chargers cables or pass-through docks with any of my USB C/ TB devices

How the battery life?
Its like a average smartphone
Since most apps are almost apple silicon compatible, the battery life is great
Screen on time is like 10 hours and stand by time will be like a month or more

Actively using Filmora video editing give 5-6 hours

Even rendering is fast on battery only exactly like smartphones

OT, but if you are looking to move to a better (more powerful) video editor which can scale nicely with skills and effort, have a look into DaVinci Resolve. The free version is more than enough for 95% of people.

Would love to but those nodes took time to learn and my brain cells are not much receptive to new learning hence i skipped.
Paid for filmora and happy with it

M1 is impressive but it’s the first generation. I’m not specifically an early adapter tech enthusiast but I need my device to be highly functional. I really wanted the M1 but then I looked into the SSD swap issue that some users were reporting earlier and got a windows ultrabook instead. We get new 16” macbooks at work too. Even though it would have been more economical to get the M1s.

they resolved the SSD excessive write issue on MacOS 11.4. Moreover it was only a data reporting error and not actual writes that happened. but its safe to buy new technology after a year to possibly eliminate some of the risks

After 10 months of moderately heavy productivity usage, my SSD is at 1% wear.
At this rate, other parts are going to fail way long before the ssd block wear becomes an issue.

I agree. But at the time, I really didn’t want to take any chances with my personal machine.
there was also the fact that a lot of software was not supported by M1 (Docker to take an example), which is not in support

Ah alright, makes sense. Still doesn't put Apple in a good light. For the world's largest company which probably pours more in R&D almost all other companies, having this design flaw be present for a decade on their premium notebooks isn't a good showing. There's always seems to be one thing or the other going on with them, be it keyboard, heating issues or something else lol
I think it's safe to reach a conclusion now - it is a design flaw after all, and Apple issued a recall shortly after this video went live:

And a design flaw is a design flaw - whether present in a product that sells a billion in a year or just a thousand :)

Nice

All i could find online though

This BS is too prevalent with apple. I had 2 iPad pro 10.5 inch and both developed the white light bleed issue above the home button. The worst part is the geniuses agreed that this is a common issue, but apple just doesnt give a damn. I have stopped buying/using ipads since.

I had to sell both at a substantial loss.
