1 day on the moon (sunrise to sunrise) = ~14 earth days.

So almost every point on the moon will be in the dark for 14 earth days continuously and in the light for 14 earth days continuously. Since the systems depend on solar power to work, timing the landing just as lunar day begins at the landing site would give the maximum mission time of just under 14 earth days/half lunar day.

Once the sun sets at the landing site, temperature will drop drastically, and pretty much freeze and destroy all systems on the lander/rover. If landing it today wasn't feasible, they would have waited a month for the next opportunity.

If you're wondering why everyone chooses to land on the near side of the moon, it is because we do not have line of sight from earth to the landing site for communication. The lander would have to relay data via the orbiter, which would not always be in LOS since it is going around the moon continuosly, so overall bandwidth/transmission time would be severely limited.

Jokes apart... Its a such a great feat I remember how the world tried to suppress especially the transfer and sharing of tech in the past... How so many countries (UK in particular) laughed at our intentions...
But the tireless work of so many generations of scientists at Isro has done it ... The satellite launching vehicles and now the moon landing and on top the work of DRDO on such shoe string budget is commendable....

I am so Happy personally, tbh a small tear just rolled watching the feat especially after what happened at the last moment of Chandrayaan 2....

Feeling so so proud and happy for my country....

I just remembered, I was studying back then when Clinton had forced Russia to not transfer the cryogenic engine tech... I dont know how I remember that incident so vividly... Rusiia had in fact transferred the tech after many years but it wasn't much helpful and so ltimately our scientists developed the indigenous tech on their own in early 2000s...
The development had started right after the tech was denied from Russia and ultimately the indigenously developed engine is the one that is being used in one of the stages of our launch vehicles...

India's space programme was easily pushed by almost a decade by Americans and West due to sanctions.

It took us lot of time to get back on track.

USA wanted to do this to stop India as they saw India becoming a powerhouse in launching satellites for lower cost than the west was offering. That was a big loss and also it helped in geopolitical thing as it worked as leverage specially against small countries(gulf).

Edit: also something important to add it was not just sanctions. Our scientist team were also blackmailed and out under false accusations , some of them were offered heavy pay to leave ISRO yet they still choose to serve the country.
Could have just gone abroad ...made almost 5-10 times the money and lived a much better live.

Their patriotism is also worth mentioning.

Among a vast array of barely functional government run organisations, ISRO is a shining star. Their achievements are nothing short of a miracle.

I was fully supportive of them even when the previous lander had crashed. And was fully confident that they will succeed this time.

I love that we have such a successful space program despite insane budget constraints. Kudos to the scientists and engineers of ISRO.

Tbh My confidence level was bit shaken when Luna-25( Russian) crashed.
I was like...these Russian have been doing it for last 50 years. They were the pioneers.

Humlogon se shayad hoga...I had a feeling we might delay it and since elections are coming no one wants to look bad this time that too second time.

But each passing day there ISRO sounded more and more confident. So that was quite a relief.

Russia hadn't attempted this in decades. For most of the engineers there, it would have been their first time. For most Indian engineers, this would have been the second time in less than 5 years.

As far As I remember India stopped taking aids from UK since Atal Bihari Vajpayee ji time.

Folks, UK has 6.7 crore people. The government doesn't control everybody. We don't have to treat a tweet from a random journalist like the official position of the UK government.

The fact that these get attention allows them to be relevant. Ignore and move on.

Their patriotism and scientific accomplishment has been overshadowed by one single person. There's being a supporting patron and then there's stealing an organization's thunder. Just like all these comments that is taking away from ISRO's accomplishments and diverting it to how supportive a govt. office holder was: that's literally their job. Even the US president didn't overshadow NASA's accomplishment when they put living breathing humans on the moon.

Now, coming back to topic:
  • the rover has been deployed from the lander
  • It was on the surface of the moon recharging its batteries via solar panels
  • Various sensors have been turned on
  • The rover is on the move exploring!

Lol the US president wasn't even first to talk, it was Neil Armstrong who spoke first with "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." FROM THE MOON

And here there wasn't even the basic decency to let those fantastic scientists speak from Earth.

Do you guys think we did the right thing signing Artmeis Accords? With USA.

I read Russia and China have not signed.

I will do my Google research on it later but just hoping that we are not being taken for a ride like How USA put tremendous pressure on India to sign CTBT. Thank goodness we did not give in otherwise they would have never let India be a nuclear power.

I hope you know that some equipment carried by Chandrayaan-3 also comes from NASA and they were only ready to partner with us after we signed the Artemis Accord.

So it may very well be interesting part of the Chandrayaan-3 discussion here.

NASA tweets has been kind of reminder to INDIA AND ISRO that we are very well your partner in this success...don't forget.

I met a paragliding friend in salt lake city, he is a computer nerd like me but i was surprised to see him watching live. I said oh! Chandrayaan. Is it today? He thanked me because he figured out how to properly pronounce Chandrayaan. I explained him that chandra means moon and yaan means voyage. Similarly mangalyaan means voyage to Mars. He said, wow that makes so much sense.

People outside India are really cheering for isro. :)
 
the return of aid money is now no longer talk of any random UK person.


BBC and GBN ( mainstream media) asking for India to return the money.
