Intel i5 12400F + H610M in 2025 for 1080p 60FPS Gaming - Yay or Nay?

Hello TechEnclave Community

I wish to upgrade my aging AM4 (does NOT support 5000 series processors) platform to something which can provide me a stable 1080p60fps experience in games from 2015-2025. I’m playing RDR2 right now and I see my CPU usage between 75% - 95% while the GPU sits at 75%. I have frame drops in busy areas which can sort-of ruin the experience.

Current Hardware:
CPU: Ryzen 2400G
Motherboard: MSI B450M (does NOT support 5000 series processors)
Graphics Card: Radeon RX 7600
RAM: 16GB Corsair Vengeance (3000 and 3200Mhz)

Games in my Library
Read Dead Redemption 2
Kingdom Come: Deliverance
Spider-Man Miles Morales
Hogwarts Legacy

I play mostly single player games and don’t plan to switch to a new 1440p monitor anytime soon. Is it advisable to switch to a dead Intel platform now? Will upgrading my CPU mitigate the frame drops and the 1% lows in games? Please let me know your thoughts.

My budget is limited to INR 20K.

Which specific model is this?

MSI B450M Pro-M2

You are definitely CPU limited, so upgrading will improve the performance and 1% low

As for H610M and 12400f, yes it will be sufficient, but there will be not future upgrade path with that mobo

Do you plan on upgrading (a complete platform overhaul) anytime soon, or is this budget of 20K the be-all for the time being?

Yay! Cheap and solid option.

The i5 12400F can easily handle 1080p without stutter or lag. The H610M motherboard is what I have; it’s solid and durable. I’m paired with the 12100F, and even with this, I get 80+ fps on almost every game at high/ultra settings. It supports up to the 14th generation.

The motherboard costs around 6k (the last time I saw it listed by Usman Raza chech with him). The CPU is around 9k (during sale time). You can use the remaining budget for a CPU cooler or RAM upgrade. Overall, it’s a good option as long as you stay at 1080p.

The latter. I just want to maximize whatever performance the RX 7600 can provide without spending too much. A complete platform upgrade to AM5 may cost twice as much!

I have seen the listing for H610M motherboards starting from INR 5.5K. Yes, the CPU could be had for INR 9K or less. Its a good value but a dead platform at the end of the day.

In that case, go with the 12400 upgrade path if you don’t mind the platform limitations.

It’ll be a huge improvement over that 2400g.

I’m not sure about the H610 chipset through. I did see a few listings of B760 but they were mostly DDR5. There were a few DDR4 variants but I did not feel the need to pay a price premium for those boards, they lacked features.

Also, how sensitive are these Intel CPUs to RAM frequencies?

Are you planning a ram upgrade as well?
Basically, the more speed, the higher fps you get
But at most the difference would be around 10%

If you want B760, this would be enough for 12400f

kill the itch, get second hand ryzen 3600 and wait

Well if you want to go this route, I believe @TechnologyHell has one available

Thanks for the info but I saw his listings and the asking price for the 3600 seems on the higher side. Also the CPU+MoBo I have is nearing 8 years. Would prefer getting something new.

Nope. I’ll stick with 3200Mhz only. Maybe get a 16Gb 3200Mhz down the line. So maybe H610M makes sense.

For an AM5 CPU, mobo and RAM upgrade you need 37 to 39k depending upon the mobo you select.

The reason I was considering i5 12400F over Ryzen 5600/5600X/5700X is because I misinterpreted the data shown in one of HUBs CPU reviews. They tested the 12400F with DDR5 memory due to which the results were favoring Intel. My bad.

Since I’ll be using DDR4 3200Mhz memory (already own them), I do not think there will be a huge difference in Avg FPS when paired with an RX 7600. So, I have two combos in mind.

Intel Combo
CPU: i5 12400F
MoBo: ASRock > B760M Pro RS/D4

AMD Combo
CPU: Ryzen 5 5600X
Mobo: https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/B550M-PRO-VDH-WIFI

Both are good, just get whichever you get for cheaper

I would prefer the AM4 route than LGA 1700 route.
