^^ The Tamron 90mm is better than the Sigma only in terms of bokeh. Sharpness. build quality are both similar. I do not face AF issues per say but it hunts a lot when you move in close.

For macro work i'd go for manual focus + live view with 10x magnification anyways :)

Thanks for the pointers.. 2 outta 3 lenses are straight out of your bag :bleh:

Eyeing a DSLR as a gift for my dad

Requirements :

* User - DSLR newbie ; but very good photographer ; fast learner.

* Will just buy a 55-200mm(if he gets comfortable with dslr)later, apart from the stock 55mm one. (so no much fuss abt lens availability )

* 720p vid. recording.

* preferring canon over nikon ; sony/pentax/US import-no,no!

* grey market-hmmmm, if good deal,then maybe...

* purchasing around june 2nd week.

* not preferring online purchase.

* can purchase from fort (mumbai) {Good dealer suggestion please}

Any suggestions/inputs, guys ?

TIA

Is a DSLR good for an occasional photographer....
I am using Canon Powershot A610 for now(Very old,so wanna replace)...
I use it occasionally for Parties etc. Mostly Outdoor
Should I take a DSLR or a Point and Shoot again?
And Which model?

For taking photos just at parties and some family get together picnics, P&S is a better option..

Coz it is small in size, compact.... take photos and put back in pocket.. DSLR, being bulky and big, U will hesitate to take it in every party... and even if U take it, keeping it always with u is a hassle.. and if keep it in some other person's security, u will always worried of getting it mishandled!!

Yes for parties a DSLR will be bulky,you can't help from being noticed that you are taking a snap.
You can go for a NEX or a M4/3 camera if you want a DSLR like picture quality.

Btw to all those suggesting the 550D @ 34 - 35k please note that it now costs around 38k due to stock shortages and tightening of prices by Canon India. (Nikon did something similar to force dealers not to publically show prices lower than MRP)

Thanks guys,

Will Check Sony NEX-3
AFAIK sony NX-3 is discontinued.. NEX-C3 is now there in place of it..

so the ones present are NEX-C3 and NEX-5..

However, NEX-3 must still be floating in the indian market..

its the peeps in US of A who get the best deals when it comes to DSLRs and LENSES, some time if the person buying for you is really expert, can lend to you an excellent deal.

The main thing which can go wrong in DSLR is the body with electronics, but within warranty period nothing happens in general. SO no worry about it.

Lenses are hardly seen going wrong, if you take care of it, people are using 20 years old lenses in this forum itself.

Regarding personal experience, about time of Thanks giving I got my Nikon D90 with kit lens, and Nifty Fifty for around 44k, while it was easily 65k at that time. so you get really good deals from there.

^ is their warranty international?

also, whats nifty fifty?

no, warranty is not international. but for cool 20-21k savings its a worthy risk.

Nifty fifty = 50mm f/1.8 Prime lense :)

Lenscap is easily available on ebay.in.

For screen protector you can either buy a screen guard from Chroma that is especially meant for Canon 550D or you can search for universal screen guard on ebay.in and cut it according to size of the screen of your camera.
