Re: Fusion lappy thread

Sorry... I didn't quiet get the thread title and purpose... :S

Do you mean the AMD Fusion platform based laptops or has some brand launched a Fusion named ground-breaking lappy that deserves a separate thread??

Sorry if I m being Naive... :P

Re: Fusion lappy thread

I guess he is talking about AMD Fusion platform based laptops. Though good but nothing ground breaking technology as AMD would have made us believe before launch. Platforms for Nettop would be available from next week, I guess lappies would take much more time.

The Hindu : Business / Companies : AMD introduces Fusion platform

vComputer processor manufacturer AMD announced on Tuesday the launch of its new generation of processors, the Fusion platform.

The new family of chipsets, using the accelerated processing unit (APU), are designed to handle multi-core processors as well as high-end graphics using a single die. Ravi Swaminathan, Managing Director and Regional Vice-President, Sales and Marketing, AMD India, said the new chipset design promise to herald a “fundamental transformation, in the computer landscape.” “The new family of processors represent the biggest shift in PC technology in 40 years,” Mr. Swaminathan said.

Claiming that AMD was the only chip-maker to have established capabilities in designing and manufacturing central processing units as well as graphics processing units, Mr. Swaminathan said, “The APU will set the new industry standard.” He said the capabilities of the new range of processors make them ideal for use in a range of products — from mobile phones to desktop computers. While the E-series and the C-series of APUs would be available in India soon, the higher-end A-series APU would be available by May, Mr. Swaminathan said.

Leading computer manufacturers such as Sony, Dell, HP, Asus, Lenovo, MSI and Toshiba would be launching APU-based systems soon, he added.

Michael Goddard, Corporate Vice-President, Chief Engineer, Low-Power Clients, Products Group, said the AMD's Indian technology development team, based in Hyderabad and Bangalore, had played “a critical role” in the development of the processor. One of the key features of the new chipset is its “AllDay Power” capability, which enables usage of computers for more than 10 hours on a single charge. “Our team in Hyderabad played a major role in achieving this,” he said. AMD's two centres in Hyderabad and Bangalore employ about 1,100 persons.

Manju Hegde, Corporate Vice-President, Fusion Experience Programme, said, “In a situation in which visual perception has become the key, especially among the youth, the processor's limitation can prevent consumers from enjoying high-end graphics.” “The new design now offers to ordinary people the computing capability that was earlier associated with supercomputers,” Mr. Hegde said.

Speaking at the launch, Bollywood actor Gul Panag said the new processor's power-saving feature would be a boon for users who were increasingly seeking richer graphic content on the Internet.

MSI has launched its line of AMD fusion based laptops-- MSI CR650 Review - A Review of the MSI CR650

The review states that the AMD fusion cpu used in the laptop (E-350 @ 1.6 Ghz) is a better performer when compared to the Intel P 6100 (2.0 Ghz , 3 MB cache). The Intel P 6100 is a dual core cpu and is a derivative of the Intel Core i3 cpu without the Hyperthreading feature that comes with the Core i3/5 cpu.

Apparently, Msi will launch AMD fusion based laptops first across their Classic range(C series- value for money segment). Laptops will be available with the standard 6cell battery and optional high capacity 9 cell batteries will be available for the same models. Fusion powered laptops will be launched in the X series range(thin, light, ultraportable series). According to an acquaintance who happens to be a MSI dealer, AMD fusion based laptops from MSI will be available by the end of the month or by the 2nd week of March. Prices will begin from Rs.26,000 (speculative prices) onwards for the Classic series. The X series will be priced at around 24-25k (as usual). The laptops will come with 2 years of warranty from MSi.

^^HP Dm1Z perhaps.
If you're talking about the one with the E-350, ie 1.6 ghz processor then i doubt it. Its listed as $450 in the US.

I think the only laptops which will be priced lower than 20k will use the lower clocked dual core or the single core processors

The Thinkpad X120e managed 4 hours 56 minutes (approx 5 hours) when reviewed by Engadget.

An excerpt from the review :-

So, the X120e gains some performance, but has Lenovo improved those real pain points – battery life and thermals? Yes and yes! While the X100e only lasted for three hours and 27 minutes on our video rundown, which loops the same standard definition clip with brightness at 65 percent and WiFi turned on, the X120e's 57Whr six-cell battery ran for four hours and 56 minutes. Yep, that's a good extra hour and a half more. In our regular everyday use – writing this review, surfing the web, and chatting with coworkers – we were able to squeeze out about five hours and 45 minutes. It's not as much as a netbook, but given the extra power we think it's probably worth the slight hit for most people, and hey, it's still enough juice to let you keep the AC adapter home without worrying when you head out to the coffee shop for the day. Either way, it beats the absolutely stunning Lenovo IdeaPad U260's rather embarrassing two hours and 56 minutes. Man, we wish that thing had a bigger battery and a slice of AMD's Fusion.

I believe with a more balanced power profile the X120e can manage around 6 hours. High capacity 9 cell batteries (82-86Whr) batteries should be available for the Thinkpad X120e. If it is priced at around 30K in India I am sure it will sell like hot cakes.
