@vivek.krishnan Hope Android get less laggy in the future, especially with low- to mid-end hardware.

Can't jump to iOS from Android. iOS is more restrictive than WP8 and WP8 isn't better than iOS in this regard.
The difficult bit is the hardware that these lumia's throw at you. Nokia had to do better with hw because they could not compete with sw. Once the WP8 sw catches up WP8 phones will become more ordinary, kinda like samsungs because then they will have got a mass whose switching costs makes it too difficult to move over to something else.
If you're tied to Android because of apps then Android is safe as there are many in that boat as well.
Frankly, I used to love Windows phone before. But what they've done with people who purchased costly phones (25k +) with Windows Phone 7.8 and they got to know, they can't update the phone to WP 8.. This already happened before with Windows.. I don't trust Microsoft anymore. Convince me, my phone will get updates for reasonable time.. I will support WP.. God knows, when they'll change the structure and stop supporting WP8 based phones.. SUCKS!

Lets see Android phones. Purchased an Xperia Sola, Sony guaranteed an update to Jellybean. Never Happened!
Galaxy S2, Jellybean version out after 8 months of Jellybean being released. I think the HTC One has just started receiving the Android 4.2.2 update, Android 4.2.2 was released before the HTC One even hit shelves.
That covers the mid-end and high-end of your Android phone.
Now, coming to a more precise discussion about understanding phones or technology. A company like Microsoft has divided its effort into 2 parts, to make an average consumer feel good about his phone, quite frankly I shouldn't be giving a hoot about what version of OS my phone is running if it supports all applications and allows me to continue with my daily tasks without any interruptions. The second thing they are pushing for is more developers, with Windows 8, they are trying to bring the concept of write once deploy anywhere. An application developed for Windows 8, will work with Windows Phone 8 and the Xbox One with minimal upkeep, this is a huge boon for developers
This crazy rage about phone updates is absolute stupidity in my opinion, the average life of a smart phone is about 2 years, so if Microsoft is guaranteeing you 2 years of updates I couldn't be happier.
Windows XP, Vista, 7 ad 8 are all running on the Windows NT kernel.
Windows CE kernel was designed for low powered devices, Windows 6.x
Windows Phone 7 was delivered to compete with the host of Android devices, throughout its life cycle it has always been update 7, 7,6 and now 7.8 I don't see why a consumer would be dissatisfied. You are getting most features except backward compatibility of the newer applications. Windows Phone 7 was powered by the Windows CE Kernel. All updates are being delivered in a timely fashion without waiting for device manufacturers to add their own junk and delaying it by a half a year/
Microsoft has a long vision of uniting all products, the entire idea of moving from one device to another and every device having a consistent UI experience is quite exciting and comforting for users. They aren't trying to maintain a standard of experience by being strict about their hardware requirements. They're tying to maintain quality of Applications by having a strong application verification process unlike Android where just about any spam gets approved.
Don't even get me started on how big a boon the Xbox One games activation procedure was going to be, what you don't understand is that they were trying to radically change the console gaming market. Its what Steam did to the PC market, you can buy games on Steam at a fraction of a cost compared to their box versions because developers are sure that you cannot resell their games, this is what the Xbox One was going to do, radically change the console market. You need to understand that Microsoft is not the enemy, they were the first software company and they've been pushing to develop the software industry.

Actually that's called truth. M$ has screwed Windows 8, windows RT, Surface tablets, Xbox one and Windows phone 8.
Currently the only thing that is saving this dead os is nokia itself, but the question is until when ?

Any Android user who says they receive updates on time is lying his heart out. Except Google phones the updates are atleast 6 months behind. Atleast.
I have a S3 which is running 4.1.2. My phone is not one year old as of now.
My friend has a One X. He is also running 4.1.2.(Last I asked him)
Another friend has One X +. He is also running 4.1.2.
So I guess in all probability I would get the 4.2 update in another 6 months time and yes I dont have time to root it and install a custom rom. Andorid is customizable and what not but the bottom line is Android phone as LAST when it comes to getting updated unless you get the google phone.

I cant stop the world from developing just because I invested in a device. Anyways , when an update comes it comes to all devices. I4s and I5 will get it at same time. There may be certain features missing but that one has to accept as the phone is old. Still anyday better than Andorid.

Yes i totally agree, but that's where nexus program kicks in.
Samsung S4 and htc one is already available with google aosp flavours and that's beside the regular nexus phones.
The idea is either get the pure aosp version on time like nexus or wait for months until the manufacturer skin it and bloat it with all their useless features.

I am not really sure about this but the AOSP version of S4 is not present in the Indian market as of now. (I was not able to find it). Anyways, this is the biggest problem that Google face. Buying motorola was the answer ? Well it does not look that way as of now.

So this is what we can derive here...
Android - Except Google phones, you are the mercy of Manufacturer for the updates (not counting custom ROMs).
WP - They make guinea pigs out of consumers to do a mass beta testing of their phone OS.
Apple - Provides updates to all eligible device, even ones 3 years old but with features missing and what not.
Gist of all, the manufacturers don't care about the consumer or their device once it has been sold. For the end user it is hard earned money invested in an over priced device and for the manufacturer it is just an addition to their sales number.
Btw we should not get so worked upon with the updates. Because without updates too the existing OS on that particular phone will still perform the functions that it was supposed to be doing, when the phone was bought.

On the low end the 520 is compelling. This will force android phones hw to improve in this segment.
When you get to the mid & higher end things get more fuzzy. Here the question is how long can you use the phone for.
There is another possibility that negates this and is platform neutral, trade-ins.
Regardless of which platform, if you can trade your existing phone in and get a good credit 50%? off the price of a newer more uptodatemodel then things change isn't it. You are in effect future proof to some extent and its not a complete loss.

Say you bring in last yearsor the one before's model, how willing are the above to give you a good deal.
