News Apple M1 5nm chip launched for macbook air and pro 13 inch

You have verify with Unidays (I have no idea what is unidays) or if that is not possible, have a chat with them or call apple and manually get it verified.
Ok. my question is student itself has to verify or anyone can use student details and chat with them? My nephew is student at VIT, vellor. Is it possible for me to buy macbook air using his details? And my kid(6th class) wants M1 air :)

i don’t know hindi. can you please brief it who all can get the gst refund? and what is required for it?
Lol that's not how GST works. The GST refund system is for procurement of materials which are then re-sold so that GST is not paid twice for the same materials.

For example, if A sells wood and B sells furniture, then when B buys wood from A, he will pay GST on the purchase. Then when a customer buys the furniture, they will again pay GST. So, B can ask the govt to refund the GST that he paid when buys wood from A. Ultimately, only the end customer pays GST of the finished product. Its not that you can evade GST, if you are not paying, then someone else has to pay it.

What is the procedure to get a student discount in online store? Do they call and verify or just uploading student details is enough with ID card?
Ask your newphew to create an apple ID and go to apple education store online. While buying you have to submit a few details like what course, which year and where you are studying (along with name of course). That's it. No verification or follow up after this.

I as an end consumer can benefit from considerable amount of discount right? Is there any reason I should be concerned about the whole system?

Interesting for me this kills mac as I dual boot and don't see windows working in M1 , but am interested to see how these child perform along with new OS

The ball for Windows support is now in Microsoft's court. Even I would like to see Windows running on these machines. But the reality is that X86 emulation in Windows sucks when compared to Rosetta 2 (which itself is not perfect). What I would like to see is companies like Qualcomm and Samsung make ARM architecture mainstream for PCs and bring out some competition to Apple's chips. Ultimately, if there is a broad spectrum of users, there will be native applications even on Windows and MS will be forced to sell retail copies of Windows for ARM.

Agree, I mostly meant using bootcamp though which was perfect for me as I got best of both worlds and it won't be an option with m1 chips now

Some of the users @ slickdeals reports too much of lag especially in safari and microsoft office which is the main use i suppose for all the macbook users. Their suggestion is to avoid 8GB and go for 16GB version. M1 users here, what is your experience?

Updated to 11.1 today and the youtube scroll lag is gone. But low fps when scrolling slowly is still there on many sites. Office M1 version is super fast here. Upgrading to 16gb won't make any difference in these cases.

I don't use much safari, mostly Firefox because of no script plugin. ff still runs in intel mode and takes up a lot of battery. use chrome for office purposes like gmail and chat and meetings. google already released m1 chrome and it is really fast.

most notable speed gains are with Xcode and simulator compared to the i5 air, it is way better.

Firefox has been updated for M1 and heard it's much faster.

There are literally videos of people working in 8gb machines doing productivity work like Office etc with no issues at all. There might be random bugs for sure, after all its just launched but i think in a month or two it will all be ironed out with native versions of all popular apps.

@Muathaz

You aware till when is the HDFC Cashback offer? I got call from local Aptronix and they told me they are not sure when the stock will come of M1 Air and shockingly told me they know HDFC cashback offer is only till 25 Dec 2020.
They are not sure if there will be offer post that. And ironically, today there was full page ad in TOI about the HDFC cash back offers.

It's till 26th
The device is sold out practically everywhere - In India as well as elsewhere
I was waiting for stocks to hit amazon (and old MBP to sell) till I noticed the expiry date on the offer - luckily a local store (Unicorn) had 1 last piece in stock

Call up stores tomorrow to see if you can find one

And yes - most mainstream apps except MS teams have a native M1 variant now

Well in that case I will try apple online education store where although there is no HDFC offer, still I can get 10% off if things go fine.

I will cancel my reservation tomorrow now since if I don't get the offer, no point buying offline. I will wait it out if even the online education discount doesn't work out.

Also, even if I don't get education pricing, can i still buy at retail price on apple india and will I get 6000 cashback if i say order tomorrow?
Since it is not instant discount, I have fear that later for some reason cashback won't come. Apple will charge my card immediately right?
Like in US many stores will only charge the card when they ship which means posted date will be late.

Not sure if the 6K cashback is available for online purchase of M1 at at apple india.

i have no idea about that.. but if they said so i’d suggest buying it through online education store. my brother got his delivery on monday which was after two weeks from the date of order, a week earlier than what was promised. from the online edu store.
