Thank you both for reply.

I was not so sure because the 500GB gone for RMA so probably they will give me a another Certified Repaired HDD.

So,I was comparing Repaired 500GB HDD with clean 250GB or new 1TB HDD.

This is the 2nd time my Seagate 7200.12 500GB gone for RMA.

Last time I got a Certified Repaired HDD in exchange of my faulty bad sector HDD.

And this Certified Repaired HDD got same bad sector problem(failed to reallocate sectors) and gave this one yesterday at Accel Frontline.....

The 7200.12 is generally considered more reliable than the 7200.11.

There could be other issues too - maybe with the PSU not delivering stable power, or frequent power cuts, temperatures, etc.

But if your 7200.11 is holding up well, then switch to that.

Repaired drives are as good as new, just that since they've been repaired they cannot be legally labeled new.

Yea,that's why I'm confused.

The case is totally opposite for me.....:S

250GB 7200.11 is more than two years old and its temperature always near 40C.

But Certified Repaired 500GB 7200.12(went for RMA) last for near 7 months and temperature was near 35C.

And new 500GB(which I bought near 1 year ago) last for near 5 months and it's temperature was near 35C too.

BTW,I have Corsair VX450W(using from last 7 months) and Zebronics Bijli Case and faced almost no power cut,may be one at the beginning of the summer.....

Well there's a certain amount of luck involved as well with these HDDs. My Seagate 500GB 7200.12 suffered on average three power cuts a day for over 5 months when i didnt have a UPS and still pulled through without any issues and average temps were around 35-37 deg in the summers. And your temps seem to be for summers as well, in which case they are acceptable, my other 7200.12 1TB shoots past 40 deg(~45 Deg C) in summers.

That aside, as Crazy_Eddy has advised switch to your 7200.11 if you feel comfortable with it.

Yea,I'm using the 250GB at the moment.

I will get a 500GB after RMA process over, may be two week later but that must be a Certified Repaired HDD.

Never seen anyone got a new Seagate HDD after RMA.

Finally thanks you both for your help!

Super Like! I bought my Seagate 7200rpm 1tb (Barracuda 7200.12) in December and it has not failed since then. I have always been a Seagate fan because of their RMA policy and the quality of HardDrives. There have been times when I gave in a 160 and got a 320 back (this was 3 years ago), and since that drive failed I had to get a new one. I might have gone for the Western Digital WD20EVDS if I had read this review earlier!

So,what's the positive about Segate's RMA policy ?

last time they took more than two week for RMA and then have not sent me any notice that they have done with my HDD.

They never give new HDD,always repaired HDDs which gonna fail soon or later.

I can't see anything positive here.....:S

How is "Western Digital Black 1TB WD1002FAEX" in terms of using as an external HDD with casing (for example., Transcend / Sunbeam)? Is it cool enough?

Hey guys, thanks for all the information this thread has...certainly helps n00bs like me....

I am looking for a 2TB drive for Xtreamer Pro to store all my movies, music and pics. Low heat and reliability are the two main factors. Looking at WD Green, good choice? What are my other options and who to buy it from in Bangalore?

Thanks!

Preferences can be with Seagate 2tb 7200.12 which is good. But if you can get your hands on the Hitachi or Samsung Drives, then it is even more better.

Any opinion abt the Samsung Spinpoint F4 1.5tb 5400rpm drive?

Is the slower rpm a bad thing?

Will be using it as the main drive with 3x500gb partitions

Or should i get the F3 1tb?

Both same price 60$

Touzeen, Where do you get Samsung HDD in India. I am interested in getting 2 tb F4.

Also would recommend you to get the F3 7200rpm drive for the main drive as it would be faster when you load apps.

Also go for 1 tb or 2tb.

Use the F4 as backup HDD
