I need to buy one today as one of the hdd seems to have failed so need urgent back up.

I am looking for 2tb hdd sata 6gb/s (hope its compatible with my old system) system spec in signature

I need this for primary boot drive for loading Win 7 x64 plus other partition for data storage.

I have selected these 2 can you recommend me which one is better in stability & speed.

Seagate Barracuda Green SATA 6Gb/s 2TB (ST2000DL003) Internal Hard Drive

SATA 6Gb/s

RPM 5900 RPM (slower)

Cache 64 MB

Western Digital Caviar Black WD2002FAEX 2TB SATA 6 Gb/s

SATA 3Gb/s

RPM 7200 RPM

Cache 64 MB

or

Western Digital Caviar Green 2TB WD20EARS SATA Internal Hard Drive

SATA 3Gb/s

RPM 7200 RPM

Cache 64 MB

I have never used WD hdd so don't know how is the service but have read many issues with RMA service here

Urgent reply is appreciated.

If you are looking for a 2tb for the home system at a cheap price, I would recommend the Seagate 5900rpm drive. It is faster than the WD Green in day to day use and is pretty reliable. If cost is not a issue, then the WD black scores very heavily.

On the other hand, if the HDD is to be used in a cramped space (like the xstreamer that someone has asked for), I would highly recommend the WD green. Runs cool as a cucumber and hardly makes any sound.

On top of all this, if the Samsung 2tb F4 is available with someone from the US, go for it blindly. It has the best of all ingredients, low power, low noise, reliable and hardly any heat.

Also would recommend you to get the F3 7200rpm drive for the main drive as it would be faster when you load apps.

Also go for 1 tb or 2tb.

Use the F4 as backup HDD

Perfect. Could not have said it any better.

Hey guys, thanks for all the information this thread has...certainly helps n00bs like me....

I am looking for a 2TB drive for Xtreamer Pro to store all my movies, music and pics. Low heat and reliability are the two main factors. Looking at WD Green, good choice? What are my other options and who to buy it from in Bangalore?

Thanks!

Yes, it is a perfect choice for the Xstreamer. The Seagate gets very hot in my enclosure when I see two movies at a stretch.

I went to buy teh hdd today but all dealer have WD green hdd for 3700 +tax which I have heard that it develops bad sector very soon & the rma takes a long time, hence avoided it.

No seagate avaialble in the market which I wanted to buy

WD black which you recommended was also not available but teh price is 5000 + tax.

Will have to wait till next week sometime hope its available by then.

I would recommend the Seagate 5900rpm drive. It is faster than the WD Green in day to day use and is pretty reliable.
I would like to understand why & how it is faster than a 7200rpm wd hdd? Is it bcoz its 6gb/s if yes then my system is old & this disk will work only 3gb/s.

Moreover Seagate is not available even now so I am left with only option of WD green but fear the high failure rate & long process time for RMA. The feedback from users are quite negative for WD green.

Just found one dealer having Seagate Barracuda XT ST32000641AS 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" selling for 8300/- now that's the double amount than wd green hdd, so I am now wondering what to buy looking at the cost difference. The big dilemma is that if the wd hdd fails the amount of data which needs to be backed up is huge & that will be a real problem if I have to recover 2TB data someday.

What do you suggest?

Seagate is available from Delta Peripherals in Chennai, who will ship the product at some extra cost. Try this.

Seagate 2TB SATA Desktop 3.5" Internal HDD (2000 GB) - www.deltapage.com

BTW

WD Green is a 5400rpm drive as opposed to the seagate drive which is a 5900 rpm.

WD Black is a 7200rpm drive which is really good for main drive on to which you can load OS and Applications. However be vary of the 2tb model which has a lot of troubles.

Service Queries:

WD has improved the RMA process and are faster in delivering the product.

Seagate has also a good RMA process.

So go ahead and buy Seagate 2tb, if not then get WD Green 2tb.

Now when you mentioned that wd is 5400 I was surprised this was not told to me by the dealer, thought I had noted down the model number is WD10EARS

where as I was wanting to buy

Western Digital Caviar Green 2TB WD20EARS SATA Internal Hard Drive

so it seems that wd is dumping these slower disk in India & on their website this disk is listed as 1TB only.

I will then go by tried n tested seagate 5900 rpm one, wondering why from 7200 rpm seagate has come to a slower drive.....whats the logic?

Lower RPM drives means less power usage, less heat generation and obviously less noise.

Lower RPM drives are also called as ECO GREEN drives that WD and Samsung specialize.

Thus lower RPM drives are best suited for storage & Backup Dumps. They are not mainstream drives in general sense. Get the logic?

WD has 3 categories in their desktop HDD models - Easy codenames being WD Black,Blue & Green.

Black - 7200rpm drives which are currently best HDD's for OS/ Applications load. They obviously generate lot of heat.

Blue - Designed for Video recorders and playback

Green - Lower rpm drives as in above

WD10EARS - WD Green and 1 tb model.

WD20EARS - WD Green and 2 tb model.

WD doesn't dump these models. They are different class of HDD's

Go ahead and buy Seagate 2tb, if not then get WD Green 2tb.

Hi all .

Got a query regarding compatibility of SATA 3 on SATA 2 mobo's.

Will SATA 2 Motherboard support latest SATA 3 HDD's?

I recently got 3 x 1 TB Seagate 7200.12 with 6 Gb/s...actually was looking to buy SATA 2 for motherboard which supports SATA 2 but got this model -ST31000524AS from Computer empire ,NB:(.....do not know what to do as i have not yet open the cover of HDD's thinking to replace them with SATA 2 from the seller....will they exchange this for SATA 2?

Or will my old mobo support this new HDD's without any hiccup's. :ashamed:

PS: Mod's kindly expedite my post as i am running out of time and space:)

That seagate hdd will work with your mobo since its backwards compatible but it will work at sata 2 speeds only not as sata 3.

How much did you buy ST31000524AS for?

^^

Got it from Computer Empire at 2700 Rs per HDD ( Inclusive of Taxes.).Got just 100 Rs off on purchase of more than 10K from them.

C2C was quoting same model at 2650 with taxes.

I've a dell n5110 with i7 processor, 1gb graphics card. I guess the harddisk is 640 GB with 5400RPM. The boot time is very slow. Which internal harddisk is recommended so that the boot time and speed increases?

The Dell n5110 is a laptop, which extends ur choice to a SSD also.

Using a SSD increases ur boot times and speed over an internal HDD by many times.

On the other hand the price per gb is very high. 40~ 64 gb around 3.5k~6.5k.

Let us have a idea of what u intend to have SSD or HDD ( having huge space).

Thanks everybody for this wonderful information on internal hard drives.

I need a 2TB hard drive for my NAS Synology disc station. I have these two options:

1. Seagate Barracuda 2 TB HDD Internal Hard Drive (ST2000DL003)

2. WD Caviar Green 2 TB HDD Internal Hard Drive (WD20EARX)

Would like your expert opinion about which one should I go for.

Late reply, but might help someone else. I would actually recommend the Seagate in your case, the WD's with their variable head spin speeds create a lot of problem with the RAID and NAS boxes with multiple drives in them. If your synology is a single HDD nas box, then it does not matter as to which one you pick, actually the WD might then be a better choice as it runs cooler in the enclosure.

The WD Green drives do not actually have a variable spin speed. Most likely runs at a similar 5900rpm speed as the Seagate Green.
