THey can charge upto 12% now.

Customs charges Basic Customs Duty and CounterVailing Customs Duty , earlier it was 1% and 1% each , now its 6% and 6% each , so there u go , they value nexus 4 at 30000 , customs duty is 3600.

Earlier amount was so small u didnt notice whether they charged 1% or 2% , now its 6% each for basic customs duty and countervailing duty.

P.S. My dad is in Mumbai Customs.

Nothing against your Dad but why is Mumbai Customs said to be the most notorious when it comes to asking for bribe and ridiculously valuing products. I have seen couple of threads on various travel related forums as well which tell others to be cautious when dealing with Mumbai customs.

My dad isnt in the Airport/Port import section , he is posted at New Customs House.

Also , even bangalore customs charges Basic Customs Duty and CounterVailing Customs duty , it was 1% and 1% each ...so unnnoticeable , but now that its 6% and 6% each , customs can be charged upto 12%.

Most notorious ? You should hear what all items people try to smuggle in/not declare.

People buy golf kits , TV's and expect that 0 customs be charged.

12% seems to be correct. I was charged 3465.36 for my Mobile BBZ10 bought for 300 Eur. Shipped from SNS UK . unfortunately even customs policies and laws are NOT Indians friendly atleast. Bada babus and our leader babus roam around the word with our money and bring anything they want royally with taxfree escaping from airport customs, but normal people like us cant enjoy atleast import. What an India. Shame...Shame.
 
I was thinking of importing a bicycle. The thing is SNS show the duty on Sports and Fitness equipments as 16.8% same as that on laptops. On using the PPOBox calculator, I saw they were charging 28.8%.
Can anyone tell me which is the right value for bicycles.

They have been charging it ever since I remember.

Otherwise how will an iPhone 5 which weighs no more than 250gms come in the bracket of 1-2lb?

iPhone's box was in another box filled with air packets for cushioning
 
^ It is the overall weight that they look into, not just the phone. I have received plenty of packages whose volumetric would be in the 1.5 kg range, but was charged the actual weight in each case (less than 500)

I weighed it home. It was less than 1lb. The volumetric weight was more than 1.5lb. And I was charged near 1100 bucks for it
 
In that case you were charged wrongly, I would have raised a dispute with them, because actual shipping weight has been their USP for long.
 
Guys, what would be cheapest and reliable option to order NOOK HD+ from bestbuy USA to India? I asked quote to ishopinternational couple of days ago and still havent received any reply from them. Have account with borderlinx too but if i get to know complete landing cost beforehand, i would prefer that.
