Delhi gangrape protests

Nothing surprising. Females are valued less in our country, hence the mismatched gender ratio. It's the way they've been brought up as children, always given second-hand treatment compared to their brothers, never allowed to step out of home or choose their education and career according to their own interests, and later in life their marriage is also fixed according to what the parents wish, but the male gets to choose his wife.

This same mentality is also cultivated by most of the people, right from the beggar to the president. At every level you have misogynists, and they don't even realise they're being such, it's all natural for them.

The best way to combat this is through education of the next generation, though even this would be difficult as the teachers themselves are supposed to teach what they oppose.

I totally agree with you, the change has to begin from our homes, especially mothers who always treat girl child inferior to a boy child.

The fear i have is now that, these kinds of incidents wont stop but the rapists will make sure that the victim is dead.

I still dont understand this girl inferior..parents treat them bad sentiment.

Is it for real? I have read about it..but... :( :(

Coz In our family and friends...If anything a girl is given preferential treatment. :@ :@ :@ :@... She can do no wrong..but the guys are pigs/idiots/morons.... Thats what our parents and family thinks.. :(

We love em to death. :)

After Ruchika Girhotra, i thought things wont be repeated.
But shameless Indian psyche 'marches' on.

Rest In Peace brave girl.
I hope after this ordeal you have achieved everything needed to get rid of the vicious circle of life and death.

Death sentence for rape is not the solution...> 5 years RI and castration..Awarding death sentence will always put the life of victim in danger. There is nothing more worthy than life..

May god bless her Soul..RIP

Let me clear, People are asking for death sentence for this particular case looking at the heinous act by the perpetrators.
For rape, the laws should be made stricter and non bailable.

It's downright foolish to expect the awarding of a death sentence (apart from castration and what not) to act as a deterrent in the minds of all those who intend to commit a crime like rape. Rape is another form of violence, sexual violence at that. If the awarding of death sentences (albeit in the 'rarest of rare' cases) hasn't stopped heinous murders from being committed, there is little chance it will prevent rapes. And please do not compare two societies as different from each other as Saudi Arabia and India. Death sentences there are handed out a lot more liberally for petty crimes as well. We are a democracy. An imperfect one, but a democracy nonetheless. This is what allows us to liberally discuss and protest. All our democratic pillars like the judiciary, police, lawmakers, the EC are what's keeping India from falling into absolute chaos.

A rapist is a rapist, period. It is highly unlikely that any law or punishment is going to deter such a person. Rape is a social problem most of all (News reports indicate that the girl was lying there on the road for almost an hour before any help came; of course with bystanders for company). Moral corruption of the society is rampant. It's the corrupt nature of such men that leads to a crime like this. Their outlook towards women (bordering on the patriarchal and to some extent misogynistic) is despicable and something the government cannot be held accountable for. The government can at best help in getting justice delivered to the victim and help with their rehabilitation. Heck, the government can't do bollocks when a father is intent on raping his own daughter. Neither can it do anything when its people are hell-bent on breaking and disrespecting laws left, right and center. Yes, protesting against the government for quicker justice is totally right but expecting them to enact laws and do things to prevent rapes is utopian.

If anything, the protests should be aimed at the men of this country, and the society at large! If my stand construes being pro-government, then that's not true. However, i am definitely anti-society here.

And yes, i am against the death sentence in principle.

The girl survived, struggled and then died as the entire nation watched. I truly hope this shakes the society to its core more than anything else.

RIP !

Death sentence for rape is a bad idea, chemical castration with 15-20 years imprisonment is more severe than just being hanged.

And as for the current case, death penalty is a must, it is not just rape anymore, but murder, and a very brutal one.

^^
In the necessity/need to punish inhuman behavior/acts, we as a society must resist the urge to act in an inhumane/animalistic way ourselves. Justice and revenge are two separate things.
It would not be justice if the girl's unfortunate/painful demise leads to just a death sentence for these men. It's an easy way out for not only those men, but also the society at large. The degradation of morality and respect towards women has been exposed in a very crude manner with this incident. The society would rather have its scum and muck washed away rather than introspect as what led to it in the first place. Every moment those men stay alive, people will feel disgusted. And that should be the case till change within is brought about by a shameful realization of the sorry state of women.

That is one thing which is most disturbing. Of all things, i had never expected Indians, and India at large be turning this way. Corruption by paying your way through to avoid procedures and norms is one thing, This is beyond feeling sorry for.

We boast of having one of the earliest known civilization, scriptures, medical expertise and what not... surely a country with a rich heritage to be turning this way was not something anybody would have expected.

I keep thinking whether its an attribute which is related to a certain strata of the society.. or something which a general Indian has 'developed'.

Death sentence must only be awarded to crimes which have mass impact on a higher scale...Honestly Rape as heinous it is..doesnt cause a mass impact..Corruption does..Serial killing does..Mass killing during communal riots...treachery causing high damage to nation..according to me these are the crimes that deserve death sentence..

Some of the reaction to this rape has been way over the top..With all due respect to the victim of this incident..If govt wants to stop incidents like these on streets..It should look into the Police/Public ratio...and recruit more police staff..It will also lessen unemployment..

You don't know the impact this crime has ...

Have you read what kind of trauma the girl has gone through?
Are you aware what has happened that night?
Have you read my post where i mentioned that people does not want death sentence for rape and what exactly they are expecting?

TEHELKA INVESTIGATION: The rapes will go on

...Every time a rape accused gets away due to shoddy investigations, it reinforces the cops’ belief: she had asked for it

When asked about sensitisation in the police, Inspector Sunil Kumar of Delhi Police shrugged away the query, saying rape is anyway the girl’s fault, particularly if she is a ‘Delhi girl’: “If a girl living in Delhi doesn’t want this trauma she will not encourage it. Suppose you are two people and I am a girl dating you both. I am flirting with one person and ignoring you, then after I see you jealous, I come to you. Then one day when he (the other person) is drunk, he might come with two-three friends and ask me to join him. I will then go with him with my wish. In a fit of vindictiveness, he will try to have sex with me, with or without my wish. But first, it is my fault because I courted disaster. No rape can happen in Delhi without the girl’s provocation.”

The cops are uncompetitive and don't know how to carry out an investigation properly. They are too busy sleeping around in their 'power' and lining up their pockets that they've forget what job they are expected to do in the first place. They are public servants, but oh no, a servant is disregarded by the high society, so they are doing the opposite instead, bossing over others. Seriously though, I pity all the cops who do try to work with honesty, they must feel the pain of getting bogged down by their colleagues everyday.

The rapes will keep happening, they won't stop. And as usual, the victim would be held accountable rather than the perpetrators. It's a hypocrite society we live in, people say one thing on the face, but have other feelings inside, which they show through their actions.

One unfortunate individual was the victim..feel sorry for the victim but one person was targeted...Regarding the second bolded part..That is not what i am reading all over the web..People are looking upto stone age saudi form of justice..to prevent rapes..self protection training and better policing will go a long way than any other stone age punishments...or as a short term measure maybe subsidized pepper sprays too...

I agree with your views on self protection training, better policing etc. But you are reading it wrong that people are asking capital punishment on rape. What they want is speedy trials and stricter punishment.
