6mm is too thick man..
I have used 4mm clear acrylic and L shaped aluminium rods.
The structure seems rigid enough.

How much are these acrylic sheets? How do you cut them
and get smooth edges?
 
Wet cutting and Wet sanding result in smooth edges.

You can easily get Acrilic Sheet from local hardware shop.
Size and thickness according to your design.
 
I think it was 700 bucks for a 6x4 feet sheet..locally availabe
for cutting u get this special acrylic cutter (60bucks)
u have to peel out layers on the sheet (lot of hard work)
