Ok, one more factor to consider before choosing between 4850 and 9800GTX+

So what to pick? Until DirectX 10.1 games, PhysX hardware support, and other GPU-accelerated apps become more commonplace in the market, it's hard to put a lot of stock in those features. So you're left with a $200 card that performs as well as a GeForce 9800 GTX, but in a smaller, single slot, single PCIe plug configuration. ATI has a real winner on their hands. If 3DMark Vantage is any predictor of relative performance in future games, it's a slam dunk.

In all GPU tests, 4850 slams 9800GTX silly

if Vantage results matters to U guys, then use Physics enabled 177.39 drivers, and see 20-40% jump. CPU score is amazing, coz all physics on GPU now.

I was thinking 4850 is what Il be getting until I saw the temp... If that thing goes upto 85 in their labs with an open cabby it will get close to 100 in summers here... Will wait 2 weeks more...maybe there will be better cooling designs...

if the goop can change the temps soo much then there is hope...

ATI cards these days score better in CAD but I wonder if the Physics support on the 9800GTX+ will speed up physics and dynamics simulation programs like RealFlow... Also would be interesting if it could increase dynamics/cloth/hair simulation/playback in 3d softwares.

Well, if the perticular 3D application adapts CUDA, then yes. It would make tremendous difference. :)

Having never owned an ATi card in my life, what's the difference between the image quality of nvidia and ATi cards?

I've heard ATi's Avivo technology is quite a bit better than nVidia's Purevideo.

UPDATE (6-21-2008 at 2PM CST): NVIDIA just informed us that the official launch date for the GeForce 9800 GTX+ is July 16th. They also wanted to share that overclocked 9800 GTX cards are currently available on the market today that deliver virtually identical performance as the 9800 GTX+. So if any of our readers want one today, they can pick one up from video card companies like EVGA and XFX have overclocked versions.
Directly from the (green) horse's mouth. 9800GTX+ is nothing but overclocked 9800GTX

Legit Reviews - ATI Radeon HD 4850 Versus NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX+ - Power Consumption and Final Thoughts

^^ I am wondering what exactly Nvidia has pulled off. A performance miracle?

Nope. performance is hardly better than an overclocked 9800GTX and is still not enough to convincingly beat 4850 that is cheaper by at least $30. (see chart below)

As for temps, it might be cooler by a few degrees but does it worth $30 more in price. As for power draw see the charts below. 9800GTX and 9800GTX+ power draw is almost same. Also, there are reviews on net where 9800GTX+ draws more power than 9800GTX.

More importantly, can I buy this "wonderful card" 55nm cool performer right now?

As for some facts look here:

It's a French website and quite reputed for their integrity.

some charts from their review of 9800GTX+

Power draw with

Total performance. 9800GTX+ is ahead of 9800GTX by 8% while 4850 is ahead by just 1.8%.

But with AA, 4850 is ahead of 9800GTX by 18% and 9800GTX+ by 11%

A paragraph translated from the site with google:
Without antialiasing, the Radeon HD 4850 cap the GeForce 9800 GTX the post. The GeForce 9800 GTX v2, however, displays an average gain of 8.3% over the first, which is not bad for an increase in frequencies of 9%! So it goes before the Radeon HD 4850.

With antialiasing, the Radeon HD 4850 through against the front, with an advance of 18% over the first GeForce 9800 GTX and 11% on the new version.

Also people are easily able to acheive much lower temps with 4850 either by using external cooling or just refixing the stock cooler properly and applying thermal paste...

Now, bottom line is Both GTX+ & 4850 Perform identical, chk pcpeper conclsn.
Dont u thnk, with just one or two catalyst update, 4850 wil beat out GTX+ completely..

Man this is getting really interesting, I am just wondering which one of these cards can run with my 450W PSU, the 4850 seems like a logical choice, and as muzux with the catalyst maturing, the performance will only get better!.

Why not... that is very well possible.

But even if it doesn't... who gives a damn? At least I don't. At $30 less, 4850 still offers hell of a value. :)

also of some of the dubious 9800GTX+ review out there shows that when playing with 4xAA 4850 has advantage even over the 9800GTX+

also ATI's driver support is unparalled..they even support there 1000 series of card till now.

Even Nvidia has a good driver support, but that is it support they don't get major performance updates with newer drivers unlike ati.
Even though pysics performance has improved with the new nvidia driver it has nothing to do with graphics, the performance is more or less the same.
Just wait for a month and see the 4850 beat the 9800GTX+ with and without AA and as the same time its price would have fallen to ~$175..

I agree that 4850 still has some advantage, but as all of enthusiasts would like to overclock their cards, at least for me this is a important factor while deciding about a cards overall performance, the gtx+ would have much more headroom to 4850, with the temps on ati already so high and a single slot cooler, the 9800gtx+ would easily do 900 on the core (since most 65nm can do 850 with decent case cooling - I'm one btw) and the memory is also pretty good. The availability is not before mid july, but once the dust settles say after 15days the gtx+ prices will also come down a bit as 4850, at that time the 9800gtx+ would look to be a better solution at its price point!
