if a hindi speaking persons call you bhaiya then it is taken as 'brother' but if a marathi speakin calls you bhaiya then it is taken as 'bihari' .. that is, by those who support mns, ss and by those who feel very cool about being marathi while there are other marathis people around. atleast this is what i have observed being a marathi.

the slang is created by mns and ss by referring to bihari's as 'bhaiyas' in the so called 'motivational' speeches.
Does not really say much other than its used in this way.

Bhaiya word has become so popular now a days at least here in Delhi, I see everyday children of age 10-15 years calling bhaiya to elderly people. I feel bad and they feel bad too I can see by their face but what to do. I dont know who teach all this thing to these children.

yeah... even i feel it depends on the context...
Have been mocked being called bihari at times.. but well, when its between friends for fun it doesnt matter..
so, ya, the context is very important!!!

As Nihal asked, WHY was the word 'bhaiya' chosen to refer to Biharis ?
Lolzzz Exactly what I wanted to know..... :P

BTW, I have a few Bengali friends whom I fondly call Dada...... e.g. Shubroto Dada......They like me calling them Dada.

So, really, it differs from person to person & place to place & context to context......

^^

Probably because Hindi speakers from UP (and most of North India too) and Bihar regions use the word 'bhaiya' extensively in their dialects. Anyone whose name is not known but needs to be addressed is done so using 'bhaiya' --- i.e. brother. I guess the Maharashtrian Hindi speakers do not do this. Alternatively I remember way back in 1996-97 when I was Bombay, I saw people calling out to each other with this weird hissing (picch picch sound), and people responded. Never understood the logic of that.
