How to clean the inside of a washing machine and keep it that way

Indian Detergents test.
Interesting video. Fortunately they chose liquids since we don't have any consumer testing from the government for liquids as yet.

Surf excel matic liquid for top load comes in at first place for cleaning ability. Tide is second followed by Rin and the surprise is to see Ariel in fourth place here.

Henko is in fifth folowed by a local brand then one by Wipro and last Genteel by Godrej which shouldn't have been in this test as its for natural fibres like silk or wool which the other enzyme containing detergents would destroy.

As a result Genteel will never be able to compete with the others without enzymes.

The trouble with these tests is they can be difficult to reproduce without more samples. For example they should have repeated at least three times per detergent instead oj just once to eliminate exceptions. It's a lot of work.
Thankfully english cc is generated. What language is that? They talk so fast...

Supercharged marathi :D

If you listen at 0.75 they sound normal and I can actually make out some words

I know Marathi. It's not marathi, probably malyalam?
There are a lot of problems i can point out, but lets not look down on them. They did what the govt won't do.

Ideally, they should remove the dirt and soil from the clothes and pour a cap of liquid on each spot. They'll go through an entire bottle looking at the size of the stains. Plus they should have kept the clothes soaking in a bucket for 30 minutes, then used the machine. I saw the machine had a stain removing cycle which they did not use.
I think they got fed up of doing the repeated tests due to the amount of time it took and the amount of water it took. Plus there was a power cut during the test. If I had to do such a test, I would choose small cloth samples instead of these vests. Machines waste a lot of water imo. Such tests should be done on identical machines by some company, not people.

Biggest problem is they didn't do a control test. That is No detergent and only water as shown here

Then compare how that does with the other detergents. Check out his channel for more. The only one I've found that does testing only.

Some other detergent tests by American youtubers. Always things to learn.

For some reason ketchup sold in the US is much harder to get out with detergent than the kind we get here which will go with just plain water.

You have described two methods to clean here.

Which is better pre-treat or presoak?

In fact only one is necessary and works better than the other. Watch

The reason they didn't use the stain clean is they wanted to see what the most commonly used washing programs can do. That too they chose express instead of the regular cycle.

I suppose at the end they could have tried the stain remover program with one of the detergents to see whether it made a difference or not over the express wash.
I think they got fed up of doing the repeated tests due to the amount of time it took and the amount of water it took.
I've seen other tests by youtubers but they aren't at the same rigour as this one. It's certainly among the better ones I've seen by Indian youtubers for consistent test conditions.

You are forgetting these guys know how to clean the clothes. They are just doing a comparison to show people which works better under a set of conditions.

I use well water for my whole house. For the past couple of week the well water is not clear and the color has changed from clear to light brown and when stored in a vessel or bucket it gets to dark brown, probably my guess is it might be due to iron/manganese build up as I can smell metal in the water. I'm not sure how this suddenly happened and trying to solve it but my main concern now is how this water condition would affect the washing machine. I have used the washing machine only couple of times after this water change happened and have stopped using the washing machine as the machine and clothes might get damaged in the long run. Temporarily is there any reliable water softener device that can be added to water inlet of the washing machine?

All groundwater and rivers are laced with fertilizers and a bit of pesticides, with some industrial waste in case you live near an industrial area.

It's always have been like this for many decades. Maybe somebody in your neighborhood changed their crop/fertilizer recently.

I live in a city (Chennai) and in a very busy area surrounded by concrete buildings and there are no factories or industries nearby. I've been in this place for more than decade and this well has never been like this even during peak summer. Don't know what changed that now.

Get a deeper boring if you can, we just got a 300ft done and water quality has improved remarkably, I know it's expensive but honestly if you can afford it, then the investment would pay off multitudes over

Wells are known to have this issue. It's curious it developed all of a sudden.

I don't think it has any affect on the machine but the slightest amount of iron will leave rust colour stains on your laundry. Since your water is soft it may not stain your wash basin with similar rust colour.

Thing with a water softener is it needs sediment filters upstream to prevent the media from clogging. Your well water isn't hard anyway which is fortunate so I don't see the need for a water softener in your case. What you need is filtration.

First use a sediment filter. These are readily available locally and cheap.

^for example.

Make sure you use wide diameter piping so water flow to the machine isn't reduced.

Maybe the sediment filter is all you need. So try that first and see if the clothes have rust colour stains. If they don't have it now then you don't need an iron filter.

If there are rust colour stains on the laundry only then you need an iron filter.

This is what I found sometime back. See the reviews. Does not have to be this brand but must have 'birm' to effectively remove iron.

You can see the problem already. You now have to replace these filters on a regular basis depending on how much sediment they have to deal with. You will figure that out when they no longer filter the sediment out.

Larger size filters will take longer to clog up. So try small and then size as appropriate.
Anyway coming back to the topic how do I protect my washing machine from hard water?
Who says you have hard water?
