India has restricted imports of laptops, tablets and personal computers with immediate effect

Putting restrictions on import exports doesn’t help local manufacturing. It simply creates monopolies/duopolies and innovation stagnates because local companies won’t have competition.
Take an example of tata/ashok leyland until people started experiencing volvo buses. India should should make free trade agreements not impose tariffs.
Isn't that the govt already doing? From a 5+ player telecom sector, being reduced to just two. By reducing the options for the buyers, they stifle competition and reduce the market to minimal players.
Today it started with devices most used for communication, tomorrow it will be something else.
Quite an irony for the govt that keeps bashing Nehru for all his deeds, yet adopting his same method to protect domestic industries.

When govt realised that Make in India was a disaster, they felt that coercion through bans is the best approach to boost domestic production rather than tie ups with potential partners.

The 2024 shenanigans has already began!!

Jiobook is made in China (attached pic from it's amazon's listing) So Jio would be equally effected from this move.

@6pack about your comment on onions, why it needs to be imported so much ? Isn't it comparatively easy to grow ? Or is it that due to farming costs, its more viable to import from far away countries ? Strange situation.

Wondering how to find what kind of agro-commodities are being imported and their costing.
Price fixing and hoarding by private distributors. Plus other reasons like bad crops due to sudden rains, rotting in fields etc. Potato seems to be going in that direction now. Very wide price fluctuations in few months from Rs 18/kg to Rs 40-45/kg in just five six months.

Forget about the hardware I'm pretty sure that jios will come preloaded with bunch of preloaded add shit.

I can already hear pre-loaded bhajans and old ballywood songs curated by Mrs Ambani.

Meanwhile, I powered on my India-made shiaomi phone after a month (ignore the date, it's not updated). Looks like CCP was concerned about my whereabouts and decided to ping it. We can take guess where are laptops are headed with these new restrictions.

China's subsidised it's industry making it impossible for any other country to compete with them on price.
I've bought items that cost less than Rs.100, including shipping, from AliExpress, because they cost less than the petrol I'd have used to visit a local shop. When a government gives it's entire industry such support, it's trying to wipe out the manufacturing base of every other country.
India can't do the same because then it would fall foul of the WTO.
I don't like the return to License Raj, but since all the PLI schemes have failed, and it seems like the government is desperate to get the much needed electronics/semi-conductor industry established in India, I don't see what other options they had. There are a ton of other countries, with well established domestic electronic and semi-conductor supply chains and industries, offering greater subsidies than India can afford to semi-conductor firms for setting up new fabs, so unless we take some really drastic steps the we'll miss the chip manufacturing bus, will never progress technologically, and will always be dependent on the whims of other countries for our security.

Also, some perspective here about the deal -

they can lobby and give Dassault contract to ambani - because arm-weapon business is just lobby to sideline money from main-stream to sideline.
But when it comes to tech - it cant be given to random people with zero knowledge.

assembling here doesnt mean that its made in India. A youtuber has identified that the exact specifications in terms of both looks, hardwarre, inputs and outputs, etc. of the jiobook is available in aliexpress for Rs.3500.

Now if jiobook sells it for 16000 which is 400% margin, what is the benefit that we get as indian consumers?. its purely aiding corporates to sell whatever they want by not allowing competition. To be fair, the competition commission of India should investigate the government itself and reverse these decisions.

The mighty WTO couldn't do anything to China. China bans any foreign companies from setting up there unless they share their patents or knowledge with Chinese companies. There's still a long list of Western companies working in China who openly gripe about it but still have manufacturing facilities there.

Indian government is too greedy to do something like this. Our govt doesn't want to do anything and wants unlimited money thinking we have a large population and that our population will become rich automatically one day and every other country will fall on their knees and worship us. Unfortunately reality is different. No one comes to such countries. At this rate we'll be outperformed by countries in Africa like Ghana or Nigeria.

It is evident that India, like many other countries, imposes taxes on imported goods to protect domestic industries and foster economic growth.
India adopting everything bad from entire globe.
  • Labour Law form China to exploit working class.
  • Oligarch system of Russia to aid our Gujju friends.
  • Censorship from Afghanistan to keep everyone under control.
  • Taxes from Europe
  • Gun-culture from America
  • Bagrang Dal, like boko haram of Nigeria to maintain our kulcha.
Restriction are imposed by countries from time to time, but they have an objective for 10-20yrs, not just to win the next election.
Take an example of china - decades back they imposed restriction on foreign imports.
but at the same time they provided heavy discount to local companies, steel, plastic, etc - all core basics raw material for manufacturing was provided free or dirt cheap to companies.
heck they even made china-post free to ship within the country and some International stuffs as well.

here in india - na khunga na khane duna was the only true statement the prime meme have given us.
SMSEs are dead in the country , 80cr+ people are surviving on free food by govt. But we are the world numbarr one country.
Children instead of going school, going to politically rally - engulfing churches, masjid, temples - but we are vishwaguru.

But still these 8th class pass trolls will teach abhijit banerjee economics.
there are handful of people in this country who understand economics, and im sure soon economics will be removed form syllabus, just like civics.
so that no one has the basic knowledge to catch those fouls.
Anyways our v president already said , vedas has all the knowledge of the world- so why waste time in learning maths, science and economics ?

"people with logic" would be the right words.
And भक्ति तोह पागलपन है, दीवानगी है. People believed that stone can drink milk. expecting logics from them in not expected in another 100 years.

This lady still believes that because of her covid is eradicated form india:

I was around 20yrs old when this happened, working in an office in Mumbai Mantralaya area. Many offices there were almost vacant that day, for eg., my boss went to Siddhivinayak used his special high connections to do the act. Only me and one of my younger colleague didn't succumb to do the same and had to see some ireful eyes. But I distinctly remember that day even today with perplexity.

> This lady still believes that because of her covid is eradicated form india:

Reality is that even I would've done this thaali bajaao for fun, together with children if neighbors and friends were doing it :)
Not for technical reasons, but just for being part of mystic fun. However, neither me nor people around me ended up doing this since (I was out of country) his messages were not taken with that high stupendous facevalue in our area after demonetization debacle.

Thanks for the headsup, I thought there are items which are not available in India being imported. Was thinking whether there are opportunities in that kind of market.

This has to be one of the finest communist decisions taken by this govt. License Raj ... we missed you (not)

India adopting everything bad from entire globe.
  • Labour Law form China to exploit working class.
  • Oligarch system of Russia to aid our Gujju friends.
  • Censorship from Afghanistan to keep everyone under control.
  • Taxes from Europe

You put it nicely. I have been observing the same for some time. India has always imported practices from capitalist as well as socialist and communist nations. But instead of importing positive traits, our govt always imports negative ones as you said.

To add to your points,
  • We are now going towards a capitalist like expensive healthcare system
  • Same with the education sector. No cheap and good education for the kids.
  • We also have a not-so-great firewall of India and control on news media. I think we got internet censorship from China.
  • One party system like ... well, let's not go there.

China bans any foreign companies from setting up there unless they share their patents or knowledge with Chinese companies. There's still a long list of Western companies working in China who openly gripe about it but still have manufacturing facilities there.

Indian government is too greedy to do something like this.
There is a variation of it exists here too,

Tata now fully owns an iPhone factory which was setup in India by a Chinese company.

Vedanta-foxconn: I dunno what happened. But a conglomerate that makes metal is now delving into chip-making. The Chinese/Taiwan company that did the knowledge transfer is out now.

Megha-BYD: Another JV probably going the same roads as above because troubles for BYD are increasing. Megha Engineering, which is a bridge-road building company might kick the BYD out of its automobile JV.

India is pulling Chinese on Chinese.
