Engadget: iPhone 4 Hands on.

We've just gotten some face time (ha ha!) with the new iPhone 4, and let's just say this: it's incredibly sexy. We'll hand it to Apple, the phone is so thin it's kind of mind-boggling. The 3GS by comparison looks bloated. Feast your eyes on the pics below, and check out the FaceTime video demo after the break! Oh, and special thanks to hand models Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg.

Some takeaways about the device:

  • As we said, it's shockingly thin.
  • The screen is truly outrageous -- you basically cannot see pixels on it. We're not being hyperbolic when we say it's easily the best looking mobile phone screen we've ever laid eyes on.
  • The build quality is really solid. The home button feels much snappier, and on the whole it just feel like a tightly-packed device, but it's not heavy.
  • The side buttons are really nice and clicky.
  • iOS 4 is very familiar -- there's not a lot added to fit and finish.

i think the antenna is good engineering , something new and one of its kind

Isn't that pretty old? If I read it right, they have an internal antenna that is connected to the metal frame of the body to increase the surface area. Is there something I am missing here? Metal frame connected to and acting as part of the antenna is nothing new, I am at least aware of this quite a while back (back when I was in college) and I am not sure whether its a Nokia innovation or not, but if I am right, Nokia had it about 8 years back. A lot of work related to eliminating the external antenna and perfecting the internal antenna in cellphones belongs to Nokia.

In any case every iPhone launch is a crazy event I guess. Already brainwashed fanboi's all over the world are counting in video calling and LED Flash as Apple innovations... LOL.

Anyways, Apple finally stated using the A4 SoC for the device it should have used for. Putting a bigger battery is also a wise decision considering they are going to unlock multi-tasking. Overall iPhone 4 looks pretty decent except for the still non expandable storage and the micro-sim slot.

^^ 32GB is not enough?? :S

P.S. really least interested in starting a flame war.. but i feel some people never appreciate things.. no matter what..

P.P.S. damn.. when will they start shipping in the UK.. i just can't want to get my hands on this beauty.. :ohyeah:

I find the integrated gyro + A4 taking us to the next level of gaming, correct me if I am wrong the PS3 controller uses similar tech.
What baffles me the most is inspite of cramming so much power, they managed to increase the battery size and decrease the form factor. Just a couple of days ago I was thinking ...hmmmm prolly Android is the future and the iPhone was losing its sheen, and boy I was proved wrong.. and a simply outstanding product to do so.

Let me quote some of the features that I have been reading on the www

+ The outersurface is made out of the type of glass that is used in making helicopter windshields and high-speed trains, I don't want to debate it..but just that fact is enough to get the g33k in me drooling
+ High Res IPS Panel Display
+The A4 Soc
+Gyro + Accelerometer
+Brilliant Optics with 720p video recording
+iMovie

etc. etc.

Check this official page too guys => Apple - iPhone 4 - Design of the display, A4 processor, and more

Time to start saving

No sony uses a different tech on their ps3 controller.Wii uses gyro although not as advanced as the ones apple are gonna use.

Why is micro-sim bad?? Why should sim take up so much space inside a phone?? Also would you rather prefer HTC evo with what 200mb(or whatever) internal storage and 32 gb expandable memmory or the iphone with 32gb internal storage?? the last thing i want is purchase an expensive phone and then go and spend huge amt on a 32gb expandable memory!!

the only thing i wanted was a bigger screen size(4.3 inch),64 GB memmory and wifi transfer of files from computer to iphone(movies, songs, etc, etc.)

the world are counting in video calling and LED Flash as Apple innovations

Well if i am not wrong it's the first phone to have a backside illuminated sensor that's supposedly provides better quality video and still images in low light condition.

I never thought I'd say this, but it looks awesome! Although I don't agree with Apple's policies and was planning to go the Android route to replace my existing iPhone, I'm now happy I put off that decision. This looks real tempting especially since the iPhone 4 has the hardware to equal/beat most other high end smartphones out in the market. Now to wait for it to be available in India :-)

@ smoky

really ?? They are selling the 16GB version at 199USD and the 32GB version at 299USD. SO, that's 100$ they are charging for 16GB additional memory. Check in the e-stores, 16GB micro-SDHC class 6 merely costs $30. So which is expensive ?

@topic,

finally, they made an elegant looking iPhone with High Resolution. The touch experience is/was always their selling point with the screen. But its really funny how they are excited about Video calling and that is WiFi only.

Caught the whole thing live at engadget and Steve had shown the At&T pricing too.

What worries me is the Indian grey market price... Initially, dealers will ask ~50k for the 32Gig model (same old 3GS story)

Slowly and slowly (as in case of 3GS and by the time of next iPhone launch) it'll drop to 28-30k INR.

Was catching it live on TC, engadget and macrumors :P Gotta say engadget was the best and had most pics during the WWWDC. Also they were the first ones to get "hands-on" pics of the iPhone later in the event.

BTW, check out the display comparison of iPhone and EVO 4G. Difference is inevitable

Finally, iphone is worth the hefty price tag. It's fast, it's slim, it's sexy, it bring few first-things to the industry etc etc. Definitely a worthy buy and I am jealous about people in states and those other 18 countries. let's hope that here it will be released before the end of Mayan calendar :)
