Storage Solutions Issues with my Sony DVD Writer

not contradicting but my sony dvd burner was 2 months old :P ... i had an asus dvd writer before that which worked for a good 2 years.. and the frequency of burning data was like 5 times a week.. no kidding

i can open the tray with a sunil shetty Punch .. and then load the dvd in it.
its after that the detection aint there..

As for the hanging part, its only wen i open the windows explorer that the left hand window refuse to show up, only the wallpaper is visible there.. i can use the other programs like mozilla, utorrent with normal ease..

get the samsung sh - 203 d verbs burn good on them :D better PIF than my old wine also :D . else look at the lg h 62n
 
why don't you try disassembling the drive and using a cotton swab (q*tip) & isopropyl alcohol on the lens? you say you've had this drive for a couple of years so dust might have accumulated. no harm in trying when u got nothing to lose.

Okay .. i ll write what i have gone thru already. :sigh:

i opened the damn drive to see for myself what i cud do.

more outta curiosity.

so i opened the darn thing up, (bloody friggin exp that was) and then cleaned the lens up.

inserted a dvd then and still no response other than the momentary lil cd icon appearing next to the cursor.

So i opened the stupid thing again and then inserted the dvd with the cover removed.

i noticed that the lens assembly part.. was moving up and down a lot than it technically (and logically) should have.

wen finally it got settled, and the spindle started rotating the dvd, it abruptly stopped rotating the disc and then started again.. this happened 4-5 times.

i thot maybe the cover is missing (inturn the upper supporting disc is missing) i gently pressed the dvd.. but nothing happened then too.

then finally, after abt 8-9 try, the dvd started to rotate near abt without any noise and the nero start smart appeared on the screen..

but i cudnt have attempted a write operation with an open cover and with sch abnormal behaving drive.

Seems like that the lens is fine, its the motor / mechanism which is failing.

I now remember that i had already got the drive serviced once for the similar proble earlier .. sometime last year i think.

So i Gave up the plans to get it serviced as i dont think its gonna be worth it.

Looking to get a new non SATA DVD Writer..

Most Prolly Samsung sh 203 d .. As suggested by 200mph earlier first.
 
it could be a problem with the PCB and not the lens.. its just that its not reading a particular burned DVD/CD right on the same drive but it can be read on another ... right ?

That's how liteons fail. And sony are rebadged liteons. RMA it.

A very good drive. You can the Media Scans I have posted of TYs and MBI here at TE.

A very quite drive.

And it just costs 1100 bucks. :D
 
well, don't fret too much because these drives hardly last nowadays. my last LG DVD writer was bought in '06 but had to be replaced a couple of months back.

Got the Samsung SH203D and it's working pretty good so far.
 
Guys..

I got a frnd's DVD Writer .. just to chek ..

and still the blank media is not showing up in my comp .. No popping up of nero .. no disc info available..

the green indicator light on the drive just dies off after few minutes.

Wen i had powered up my own dvd writer with the cover removed, i had noticed the rotating mechanism behaving abruptly, i guess same is happening now too ..

Whats the root cause of the problem ..?? Anyone got any idea?? :confused:
 
yaar i did went, my badluck that he was out of station..

and now that i got the news that hes back.. i cud only muster getting his dvd drive ..

and btw.. i have tried 3 different IDE cables on my system.. no luck

Stuck up badly .. :(
 
Probably a bad ide port on the mobo ? Which mobo you have ? Try reformatting your os and then give it a shot. Windows XP SP3 FTW.
