When I was in Cochin (this was nearly 20 years back), I remember my father showing me a worm/maggot in the water filled from the corporation supply and telling me how I shouldn't drink out of the tap. So its not like home cooked food is so great either for people in the cities especially. Plus some of the dangerous food poisoning bacteria survive even above 100 deg which means cooking might not help you either.
