La Tomatina in India

Seems like a fad...let us see whay happens next year. IMO, we already have festivals like Holi and this 'import' is not necessary.

Considering the price of fresh tomatoes being Rs.16 in my place, i can buy upto 75 kilos of tomatoes, invite few of my friends and celebrate La Tomatina in my flat's parking lot. I still have last week's left over sambhar, dal and panneer in my fridge which can add up to the range of colours. Would be fun. :D

The average entrance fee is 5 euros for an event like this in europe and elsewhere where its regularily held. 5 euros is the equivalent of two regular meals in said countries.

We pay Rs.1200/- or the equivalent of 30 regular meals in our country :O
Exactly so to waste one tomato how much tax does one have to pay ?

I think that really ought to settle any 'concerns' ppl might have. Given how unanimous they have been here one thought i was talking to my mother.

Saw this on the tv the other day and was thinking wouldn't it be cool to have something like that over here. IT WOULD BE FUN, remember FUN.

But then how many ppl are going to say waste waste blah blah.

Hah :P

IMO the correct solution would be to put an entertainment or luxury tax on this event
yeah, already factored in

^^ Only since it ia western product, so it is "FUN" & since Holi is Indian, it is boring. I dunno when people with come out this mentality.

Wy import things when we have something better ?

Not everyone is going to imitate the west some are going for the experience . !

Holi wastes water and Tomatino waste food ! If you play Holi then you have no right to brand this as stupid :D

^^ play dry Holi, whatever, don't justify stupidity.

Come out of your arrogant shell and be broadminded then post . People have different opinions and different ways of living there life . Get over it .

Might as well live your life in a nutshell .

By your logic, adding another wasteful event to an existing event should be okayed, I hope you are broadminded enough to process that.

If half the proceeds from ticket money was going to bring tomato prices down in this food inflated country none would mind. In India people give away food, not throw it away, so please stop justifying a glamorized food fight.

This is a free country and people are entitled to spend as they want . Be it spending on different IEM or participating on La Tomatino . You spend on what you like and what you want and you brand others stupid.

I am not justifying the event . I am justifying the fact that people are entitled to there opinion and there choices and One last thing , They are saying that they will use tomatoes that can not be consumed . Oh wait ,! You must of not read that !

they are entitled to their opinion and we are entitled to our opinion of calling their opinion stupid , and if tomatoes ... which cannot be consumed = rotten ... seriously rotten tomatoes on your face hmmmm okay.,

^^ Then they should do exactly that. Play Holi. Do we really need this? Save up all the "unconsumables" and use it on Holi. Why does this event wreak of wannabeism? More so because of the timing of the event.

They are saying that they will use tomatoes that can not be consumed

You do know that "cannot be consumed" perishable items have a lot of use other than feeding people. ex. fodder.
When a country has food crisis, the last thing people want to see is a food fight, if it is "not fit for consumption" then make efforts to save them from getting rot in the first place.

And yes, this is a free country. But where do we draw the line? This event is wasteful.

"This is a free country" is such a lame excuse to get away with anything. A choice in IEMs is not a very good analogy, it is not wasteful and does not have a detrimental effect.

People piss on the streets because this is a free country, that's a better analogy.

No way I am justifying the event mate . I am saying that people have a choice of freedom to make choices. Now, I wont be one of those who chooses to go there and pay 1K to throw Tomatoes . Criticize people just because they are going to that event is not justified IMO.

Dude, I'm not a stuck up person averse to having fun, and I do have a right to criticize and even try and influence other people from doing what I think is incorrect.

Too much desktop activism for one day. But it's sad to see so many "next gen" guys/gals jump on the ZNMD bandwagon. I'll post 2 things later -

1. Rusell Peter's joke on American Weddings and the tradition of throwing rice on the newly weds. It's funny.
2. Mass Holi somewhere in the US. (Holi Woodstock) was on facebook some time back. Some people may have seen it.

Dhoom comes out.. Guys all start racing and sticking cheap plastics on their bikes..

Ghajni releases.. People throng to gyms and get ridiculous haircuts..

All this is nothing new.. and not just in India.. Americans go overboard with their star trek / star wars conventions because they love the movies and like a more personal experience .. Hell what do you think about the impact twilight series had..

And personally I'm against this whole trend of calling someone a wannabe.. This is the worst form of premature judgment.. Not every person can have the same interests as you. Some guys spend 30k on shades & jeans, others may buy pc hw, buying a trashed bike and rebuilding it, going to Thailand, go skydiving, donate to a charity.

The same finger can be pointed to each one of us. Be rational.

Also.. La tomatina wasn't invented by the director of the movie to sell the movie .. It's a very old tradition..

He showcased it to the masses.. They liked it. Movie hit.. Mission accomplished!

Now some chap came up with a way to commercialize this craze in a much more practical way.. Props to whoever he is for being so entrepreneurial..

And we Indians find lots of ways to waste our resources(religious, social traditions) so let's stop being so hypocritical..

You won't believe the amount of food that is wasted due to lack of proper storage and over production. The govt holds them back to keep prices from plummeting..

The amount of tomatoes used for this event will only be a miniscule part of the total lott being thrown away every year.. Atleast some farmers make a quick buck.

As for me.. I don't deem it worth 1k spent.. but that's mostly a deterrent..

(swoooosh)

Well put and I agree, and therefore I don't throw the word around very often, but in this case I did.

All eez well, dada. :)

The way i see it,Promote the event and conduct it every year. That way farmers can earn some extra money selling waste tomatoes to dump kids with lots of money to spend. And the government should impose an insanely high entertainment tax.
