Hi All...

Now Don't go making preposterous assumptions and conclusions before you reach the end of the article. This short article is my first one. Crticism and Suggestion welcome.

In my opinion you are a digital pirate if you.

1. Buy bootlegged copies of games/movies/music from streets
2. Download games/movies/music from Web without paying for it
3. If you use MP3's at all..
[Yeas, 99% of the MP3's that 95% of you guys have is illegal ]
4. use ebooks/Audio books that you didn't pay for.
5. HDrips/ TV shows etc All come under this list.

So Now we are clear if you are a pirate or not. Lets move forward.

Lets answer Why Piracy?

To be exact we shall discuss about Piracy in India.

I have heard pirates being called lots of choice abuse words and insults. some to the extent that they are impotent!!!...

Why does a average indian techie resort to piracy?. one word. MONEY. Lets take 2 situations

a. A unemployed kid.

Either his pops have to be earning head over heels otherwise i dont see him affording PC upgrade/ Games / Gadgets / Consoles / Console accs / Console games. some console games retail for such price that a avg indian house hold can live for a week on that. For some thats even more.:(

b. Employed Fella....

Ok..since most of us are S/w Engineers lets talk pay packs.

A normal person gets 25k~30k per month. Lets say hes staying alone. Monthly rent, food, expenses, parties & boos. and boy lets for gods sake hope that hes single. otherwise his accnt will be a joint checking account. . And lets not even consider savings, buying a house, a car or anything.

Now we have calcualted the monthly cash flow. how much one can spend on all??.. GTA4 Pc for 500 bucks was a exception, so dont start saying there are block busters cheap enuff. Dont say that if you cant afford dont buy coz DAMMN IT, I WANT TO. its human to want more. So are you saying that you are rich so that i should be drooling on what you do??. i dont think so.

BDR movies cost like 1000 bucks per movie. Comparing these to indian income its just not feasible. In US/EU countries people get paid upto 10$ for a hour. 7$ to 9$ is a more exact figure. they just work a 10 hr shift or a after a week they buy a new PS3. in india its like 25k. Buying that itself will leave most high and dry.

Yes, I can resort to seconds games. And I do. especially for PS3. Why only PS3, thats no brainer .

Arguments and Retorts.

Some common ones I already said above.

1. Support gaming in india.

Seriously i dont see the point in this.

2. Support Developers.

Please understand the cost and effort that take to develop a AAA game or a Avg Hit game. And take the sales chart. And take how much a Average indian techie have.

3. You are a loser

No Sir, you are a jack-ass for not understanding the point.
The pirates who are in case here are average indians. which are 99% of the tech forums.

And please dont even care if you are not making money for yourself. only then youll know what it feels.

I buy original when I can afford it..or IF I find it worth it.

So what about you?

Your definition of a "digital pirate" is flawed. A steals something, sells to B. B is not a pirate. Abetting to piracy, perhaps, but not a pirate.

I try my level best to avoid using pirated softwares by going for more open source or free applications. But the same can't be said for movies/TV Shows/Cartoons.

Not that i want these for free but because most of movies/TV shows i watch could never be found in my local place for purchase.Even the ones which are available are too costly for me to afford.(By the way,I am not an engineer)

Yes, I am a pirate

do understand that popularity is an adverse effect of piracy.

some of us buy a legal copy of softwares at some point of life...not coz we wanna c how it work...bt coz we already know how it works..

most people go to live music shows n buy music albums...nt to c how it sounds n feels... bt coz they know it n like it.....its like a tribute being paid later.

i know people will say demos n trailers are for that matter...bt a person in tight economy will always pay where its worth it...

PS:

1. i read the article

2. i am a pirate

3. i pay where i can afford

Yea... probably...

This i wrote in view of indian users. hope thats something different.

Its not just India, but all across the world.

However, I believe the Indian user pirates more than required. We don't spend money at all, even when we can afford it.

I ll leave my argument at that.

^^ Point said, there are like 2-3 good games released annually, but no we have to try each and every game thats released :)

And money is the core, and solution to all problems :)

BTW I am a pirate too :), would I change if I was making more then 100000 pm? maybe, but more not likely. Why we (Indians) are pirates, because its a very easy stuff to do, if we had the equivalent of RIAA suing our asses off, (and that would require a very efficient judicial infrastructure). But then again, if that was possible, I would be living in a developed country, and playing pirated games would be least of my concerns then :) That brings me back to square one, if we behave like third world countries, we will never reach a developed status.

Bottom line, we all will be pirates, unless the punishment is worthwhile for not being one.

Repps away

where the rep button go???

Gaming Piracy and Piracy in General are 2 different things..i fail to understand why do u want to discuss it under the same headliner...

About Music Piracy, just trust me on that its the Royalties/Shows/Performance based moolah which keeps them alive, they already figured they cant stop MP3's

Bah, not again...

And again, before we fall into our favorite national pastime (bad-mouthing ourselves )

Why we (Indians) are pirates, because its a very easy stuff to do, if we had the equivalent of RIAA suing our asses off, (and that would require a very efficient judicial infrastructure).

Do take a look at this:

TPB Tracker Geo Statistics

^^Reason for that might be our Sucky Bandwith ..

Piracy and Bandwith availability might be directly proportional.
