That eg. is repeated countless times on the thread;, I cant afford a ferrari, I see an empty convertible on the road, I just try to jack it?

There are millions who cant afford a roof over them, should they just come an occupy your house when no one's there?

The factor on why we dont equate piracy to stealing is because software is an intangible product (something you cant touch, smell etc..) and that punishment is not harsh enough to change our mindset and computing convenience.

True !

Yeah,I don't mind repeating it again unless the message went thro' Loud n Clear...

@rocky_pratik

Thnx. for the support...

Glad to be a thief if that's what this comes to !

Examples:

Suppose one want's to watch a movie real bad, something that's not released in theaters...

Are you saying a person would prefer saving up and splurging it on a DVD(599/999 bucks) or BD(1k +)???

Or can't he just downloaded the movie being shared by other users???

Software like Adobe Photoshop are expensive...

So one has to save up enough money to buy one and learn to use it?

^ I know they are quirky but I'm trying:ashamed: to make a point here...

In all cases, there are enough no. of ppl who buy original software and make enough contribution to the manufacturers/vendors...

So when one of these buyers shares the same for others who can't really afford to buy the same is enough justification imho !

As such, a person has hundred other expenses every day and he/she definitely has prioritize and think about keeping aside some money to buy legit software etc..

I am saying that not having money is just a reason. Its not a Justification for pirating. Just because you do not have money don't mean its alright for you to pirate. I am not asking anyone to stop pirating, but just understand that its still stealing regardless of what ever reason you have for piracy. Don't try to justify piracy and say its not immoral since your cannot afford it or whatever.

As for the developer's getting enough money from people who buy originals, even Apple got a lot from iPhone sales, does this mean its not immoral if you just go to a shop and steal one since Apple already made so much money from people who bought it already?

People can share software, but share it the way you share hardware. If you have an MP3 player and share it with your friend, only one of you can use it. The same applies to software. You are free to share your software with your friend. But If your friend is using it, you should not. If you make a copy so that both can use it, its again stealing. That kind of sharing is not justified act as you said.

There is no justification for piracy. If we are doing it for whatever reason, we are stealing plain and simple.

Lord Nemesis said Pirates are like Thief so we are Theif :P :P

Pirates are Thieves and that applies to me too. :P Pirates should just accept the fact that they are stealing. The word pirate itself in a general context refers to a robber.

@MODS

There really should be and end to such threads on PIRACY, POLITICS & OTHER CONTROVERSIAL/DEBATABLE topics...

Else all the attention from the "Tech" side will end up drifting towards these threads ! And that's just gonna result in lotsa inactive threads & unaswered queries...

An Honest appeal from my side.

Do you work for some Anti-Piracy organization???

I'm glad you buy original stuff and do everything the legitimate way but please don't think you convince everyone else to do the same !

I for one am a college student with no income whatsoever but being an hardcore PC user, tend to download music, software, games & movies because i cant afford to buy them and when I can,I do purchase them every now and then...

So whether your gonna accuse us of being pirates is upto you !
We will continue to be the same until things(affordability) change...

I seriously hope you've conveyed your message and not planing to start yet another thread with a different title to argue bout the same thing...

Dude I am the captain of pirates....

*sigh*

One forum i am accused as a pirate in the other i am a legitimate saint....
i buy those coz i work with those. It provides my bread and butter.

This thread is a tech thread. And I am glad that we are still having a sane discussion. Even though the arguments are kinda repetitive from both sides now. But that should not be an excuse (to the flamers and spammers) to start derailing or spamming the thread. :hap2:

Dont worry, people wont stop reading and replying to other threads.

1. Yes,this is a tech thread that proves to be quite debatable !

2. Sane turning into insane is just a matter of time...

3. Such threads sure do lure members to further aggravate the discussion in certain cases.

All the above go hand in hand.:P

Just my 2cents. :|

I'd have stayed away from this topic, as this is the umpteenth time this has been started, but this oft-repeated analogy always gets my goat

That eg. is repeated countless times on the thread;, I cant afford a ferrari, I see an empty convertible on the road, I just try to jack it?

There are millions who cant afford a roof over them, should they just come an occupy your house when no one's there?

That's a fallacious argument

Just as same as If i were to use the analogy below to try justify piracy:

"i see a book lying at your desk, and I pick and read it at your desk, then leave leaving the book where it is....Thus I stole knowledge from you"

PS: Not trying to justufy piracy, neither am I condoning it..just that bad/incorrect analogies make me cringe

PS: Not trying to justufy piracy, neither am I condoning it..just that bad/incorrect analogies make me cringe

You cant be technically correct in all arguments.

Let me add a variable, "through the process your monetary compenstation is reduced, or turns negative"

Now in your argument, if you read my *personal* book, and the process of you viewing my data, decreases my monetary compensation. Yes then in a long shot, you have stolen something from me...

^^ Then forget the analogies and simply go with what the law says. The law states that piracy is stealing and so however does it (me included) is a thief/robber/criminal. However I am in no way proud to be a pirate and I do try to go legit whenever I can afford to.

^^^

That's the only thing antic piracy folks have to say...its time you guys said something new

^^ What I am trying to state is no analogy will be 100% correct. But the basic premise remains the same.

And the fact that analogies are incorrect will be debatable unless you try to figure money into the picture, which does nothing but equates piracy to stealing. And thats how the developed countries looks at piracy, and provides for the laws.

I had some healthy debate, with my law professor during college days regarding IP laws. What always was a stumbling block in the discussions, was what if Pythagoras patented his theorem?

m_jeri: I steal but am I thief? Are we thiefs?

Rahulrulez: I am thief but people who work cant be thiefs. Only jobless can steal.

rocky_pratik: I am thief and proud of it coz I can get away with it.

lord_nemesis: I am a thief, you are a thief and everyone should be ashamed of it the way I am.

If you steal...yes you are a thief.. In no language you can make it otherwise.
Coz stealing is a action by a thief.
