Nothing wrong in waiting decently in line for a purchase.. ok a bit weird in this case, but nothign wrong. Their waste of time. Not yours. so stop reading this thread and go do something much more useful than sitting at your comp reading this.. :|

These people should be shot. I hope to god that a meteorite hits them.

That would improve the supply demand problem of PS3 a wee bit...

Well People in India too stand in lines but for different reasons.

The worst I have seen is 2000 people in Allahabad waiting for BSNL SIM cards in 8 lines at 5.30 in the morning just waiting for the office to open. When the BSNL people told that they would not be available that day (Just so that they can sell them off in the black market) the people went violent and there was a lathi charge to disperse the crowd. I had a phone but no SIM card for almost 6 months in Allahabad.

Maybe he delaying this engagement to buy a PS3 so that he can sell it on eBay for some 5000$ and get enough cash to buy a better ring and save enough money for a Honeymoon somewhere in Hawaii or something. I would do that if i had the chance...

akS !]\

Params7 is correct. Launch time may be the only and best time in a long time to get a PS3 so this kind of behaviour is understandable.

No it isn't. If your life is so dominated by an entertainment device, you need to take a look at why it is so boring (which is the only possible reason you could want it that bad).

I continue to want them to be hit by meteorites. Large hail stones will do to.

Don't try flaming me, it will do no good. I am very willing to be unreasonable here, because this is just an internet forum.

OMG! I would love the opportunity to flame you just for the laughs, although I'm not sure why you're so defensive and acting all threatened.

As Josh mentioned earlier. People all have something they love and maybe even obsesses about, be it gaming, music, movies, novels, art, sports etc etc. So what you're complaining about is the very nature of all humans which seems pointless.

why blame Sony ?? :S :S

This is the true face of the PlayStation 3 debut in Japan. Hardcore gamers are not here waiting in line overnight, buying a first-run PS3, and running home to play some good old next-gen gaming. Rather, opportunistic Japanese businessmen have the largest presence, hiring poor Chinese men and women to wait in line for a PS3, one which will later be sold on web auctions to wealthy gamers around the world for exorbitant amounts of money.

I don't understand what the fuss is all about here. The night the XBOX360 launched (name time last year IIRC) I was driving by BestBuy at 9pm or so and the situation looked similar with a line of people with their sleeping bags, etc. It's not a Sony or PS3 thing, it's people's passion/interest/love for something kicking in here.

#1) not everyone is awaiting the ps3 THAT eagerly

#2) sony has problems making enough PS3's for a grand launch worthy of sony

#3) sony has problems making em cheap.

but still yes, the article itself doesn't say that sony did that , but i would say its a very worthy candidate. plus sony wouldn't send its own staff to do the dirty work, would it ;)

EDIT : seems slashdot made the same assumption i did :D

There is a difference between camping overnight, and spending a week in line.

@CK_Nish: who is being defensive? I am deriding that lot, and saying that no amount of arguments on anyone's part will convince me otherwise.

thing is , i dont mind people who actually like the ps3 to wait their entire lives in line ( IMHO good thing... their genes end with them :P)

and i dont care scalpers getting ps3s for lazy/rich @$$ ebay buyers (drain those trust funds :P)

but what about the real ps3 fanbois who actually stood in line overnight to find out that a bunch of scalpers made off with them? ( well that should be enough punishment for being a ps3 fanboi in the first place :D )

If the line is expected to be long, you can't expect to come in late and be among the first to get your hands on the product.

Maybe that's why they started a week earlier, to get a headstart, and those sane people who will be coming over just a night before, are better off waiting till December or March.

Ah but then we come to the fundamental worth of the product - is it really worth that much?

I can think of no material object that would have such a hold on me, that I would spend a week in line to buy it at an obscene price. I mean, if someone told me that I could get a car for 100$ if I stood in line for a couple of days, I might just do that (not because I like cars or anything, just that saving 19990$ is in a way worth it), but spend 7 days so that I can spend 600 odd dollars - no sirree!

That depends on one's own likes, dislikes, You might stand in a line for a couple of days to purchase a car for $100 but I woudn't stand in a line for a day even if I were told that I would get the worlds costliest car for free. There might be people who who are willing to stand in a line for a week to get a car for $100 and then sell it off to make money to buy themselves a PS3 or Quad 8800GTX. Like saving $199900 is worth it for you, Playing PS3 games might be worth it for them.

^What lord_nemesis said.

They've been waiting for this day for years now. Its the official upgrade to a machine that set all sorts of guiness sold-out records and took the world gaming market with a storm. This is no suprise at all, and understandable if its the ONLY way to get their hands on one.

And camping is no different from going out on a holiday with a tent. Look at some camping pics or head down your local ToysRus now and see it for yourself.

Though I'm not trying to justify those who went out of their way for it, but its not just gaming. People quit jobs over World Cups (even with the fact they can always catch a replay), and perhaps the girl herself is a gamer and would rather prefer a Ps3 rather than a ring which he can get anytime soon after the funds show up...but the Ps3 will be a long wait.
