No we are just comparing the graphics..And yeah Gears has better lighting, but thats actually because of its art style. And Rage uses a different lighting scheme to bring out its own style..So I guess! No comparison here!

^^ Com'on guys 18Gb....really is it that bad...? My Avatar copy is about 20Gb if I remember correctly....

GTA 4 was like 15Gb...Yeah I agree it seems a lot when you consider Indian Internet but otherwise if you look at data size these days its not so bad....

On a side note: I remember playing on a 100mb HDD games that took like 30MB at the time. That time a 740mb CD looked like a lot, ...Its just the growth of data....a 2TB HDD is like 4K odd, so compared to that 25GB is nothing....We are just taking it that way as its a HUGE download I understand, but really not the end of the world.

Maybe I am just a iD fan I dont know, but I remember Upgrading my PC for Doom 3 back in the day and it was well, worth it, I remember the -ve criticism back then as well, when Doom 3 came out...but it is still what defines iD and ofcourse those endless nights of Quaking around :)

I remember getting the 6600gt when Doom3 was out since it lagged like crazy on the 5200.
I'm waiting for steam support to reply to my refund ticket. I will still try the game when it's cheaper.
For now John should stop building rockets and hire a better team or is it Bethesda's interference ?

You hit the nail on the head. It is a HUGE download. And with our Indian internet connections that have stupid download limits on them, it is definitely something to complain about.

I got the PC version a couple ago from you know where, and the technical issues are unbelievable. I decided never to buy a game from a big studio after the disaster that was Crysis 2, and RAGE is the perfect example of why it is so good to boycott games from big studios. No graphics options except AA, no vsync! Really do these guys have any brain at all? There was an outrage amongst PC gamers for the lack of advanced graphics options in Crysis 2, but still id the beacon of hope fro PC gamers launches a game with no graphics options. I really feel bad for all those who gave 60 USD for a game with no testing on the PC version whatsoever. The game is virtually unplayable on AMD cards with all texture pop in, flickering and screen tearing, and the minimum system requirements says a radeon 4200 is enough! Judging from the videos, the Xbox 360 version looks absolutely gorgeous (I like wasteland!) , even better than many recent PC games. It is a testament to the genius of Carmack that it plays at 60 fps on it. But at the same time, the PC version looks like the illegitimate and dis-formed child of the Xbox 360 version.

I remember buying Doom 3, not to play it, but rather to support id software for providing a Linux version. Now I cannot believe I am feeling guilty for doing that. I try to buy games as much as possible, but this is one game that I recommend everyone pirates, just to show id software that we will not be treated as second class citizens.

I got my refund last night , had the 60$ added to my steam wallet, preordering TESV instead now.

I hope that lives up to expectations

i think 20gb is too much size.

Showing whooping 18GB. What the heck.

This is largely attributed to the MegaTexture rendering tech. used in the id Tech 5 game engine. MegaTexture uses a single large texture to render a static terrain instead of smaller chunks and thus occupies a lot of space on the hard drive. Different sections of the megatexture are then loaded into the RAM and is displayed after matching the resolution. Larger resolutions require more textures to be loaded and will require raw CPU power.

1TB is what Carmack claimed was the size of their uncompressed dev build.
You guys shouldn't be complaining about a piddling 20gigs :P

I faintly recall there was some rumor spreading around on TE long ago, that some game of id (not sure if it was RAGE) will occupy 1 TB or so. :P

It is auto-patching to 1GB. Running like crap on Radeon accelerators. Plus is not a classic FPS, so will skip this one.

You will be missing a good game nonetheless. Do not judge going by the reviews. The performance can be tweaked with the proper drivers.

If you have a change of mind later, try the updated RAGE optimised drivers released by AMD. The older one had issues because it did not have the latest Open GL drivers and AMD replaced it quickly.

It can be downloaded here - AMD Catalyst

Want to play the game on 360.

Min req Xbox 360. Ps 3

Recommend req Xbox 360 , ps 3

How does it play? Which game is it most comparable to? I heard that there were no advanced settings for graphics - does it mean that the engine is not scalable?

I think I can possibly tell you that in a day or two. :P

Borderlands perhaps? Most reviews seem to say so.

Yep. This is what it offers by default courtesy Ars Technica.

No V-Sync either! Not that it is required since no present GPU can single-handedly churn out >60 fps. Not on a low-end res. i.e. :P

I'm playing on 1680x1050 max AA.

I set v-sync from the nvidia control panel. Haven't seen any tearing as yet, so that seems to work. I also enabled the 8k texture force load settings that Bethesda has posted on their forums.

There's also a few more fixes posted on Geforce.com over here

In summary, Bethesda/id claim that a vast majority of issues to have popped up over the past couple of days are driver problems. Both nvidia & AMD have special drivers out that supposedly fix these.

In spite of all these fixes and a relatively beefy setup (in sig), I have on rare occassions, seen a little stutter here and there. This seems to happen for the most part during driving sequences. The game does look absolutely gorgeous. Despite the apparent open world look it's got, it isn't all that open. All missions I've done till now have involved going to point x to do job y. There really is no straying off of the path though. While I'm free to explore any previously unlocked regions, they are all still very linear. Corridors/doors/mountains/rocks/cliffs will always block you off and hem you in.

Additionally Tim Willits/Carmack have also made statements about how Rage is NOT supposed to be much of an open world deal. Also, comparisons to Borderlands are unfortunate.. The only thing that I can think really compares is that they are both post-apocalyptic. Rage has it's own thing going for it, which isn't exactly something we've come to expect from id. They've done a lot of work building on the NPCs which is pretty great actually.
