Samsung Wave S8500 India release

Re: Samsung Wave S8500 India release??

@sujithbvm- nope .,. no widget running. Just the homescreen besides those two . Someone pls test it and report back .Thanks

Re: Samsung Wave S8500 India release??

Happens on mine too i think .. try this : open media browser, then simply press menu, then start manager and see if its running ?? I think they need to make the application multi-task aware ...

Re: Samsung Wave S8500 India release??

@yogi7272

Actually its good that the media browser and the file manager automatically closes itself while pressing the menu button. Suppose you have your private stuff on the phone and accidently you leave it open then anyone can access it.

Re: Samsung Wave S8500 India release??

@arpan @soumalidon - The point is guys, this thing does not multitask as good as my N86 or N82. These two devices are multitasking monstars  With a device which has 1 ghz cortex A8 , 512 mb ram & the best gpu-sgx 540 , heavy multitasking should be a walk in the park for Wave. Looks like BADA is not ready in that aspect yet. My only prob with Wave is that. Also I had some 6 low memory errors in last two days whereas I had none, I really mean none in a yr's use of my lovely N86 :cool2: A friend who has tested Wave in its beta stage states otherwise, he claims to have run 10-15 apps simutaneously & finds my observation weird. Anyways I got Wave as a super featurephone only & not expecting it to be a hardcore smartphone. In few months time it may turn into one though :cool1:

Otherthan that, everything about this device rocks. Video playback, display, touch sensitivity, games, build quality, music quality, speaker loudness, 720p video recording, superfluid user inferface etc is excellent :eek:hyeah: This device is a super success story for Samsung, no doubts about it

Re: Samsung Wave S8500 India release??

well my wave too multitask-ed around 12apps simultaneously, further bada needs some time to get more stabilized , GPS didnt worked tho :(

oye, anyone got the TV-out cable ?????

Re: Samsung Wave S8500 India release??

@kanishk619 - The tv out cable that nokia provides with their handset works fine with Wave. You can buy that from nearby phone shop.

Re: Samsung Wave S8500 India release??

@ yogi.. give it time dude.. how good were the other OSes when they made their debut? This is the first bada phone and the OS is quiet decent to say the least. Im sure in the next firmware release they will optimize it even more. What i really want in the next update is text reflow :) BTW what were u doing when u got those low mem warnings?? how many home screens and widgets did u have? I noticed that the network widgets take up considerable RAM and i experienced the same low mem issue when tryin to play shift the other day.

Re: Samsung Wave S8500 India release??

@ soumalidon - zero widget on any screen. I was just trying to run camera, asphalt 5, homescreen, music player, movie player, my files & media browser simutaneouly.

@ yogi7272, soumalidon & arpan

Since you people are online... can you please answer my queries listed here.
@kcube- 1- Yup, there are indeed two variants of Wave, 2gb and 8 gb one.But in India only 2gb model is launched by Samsung
2- There is 550mb internal memory reserved for msg. A friend told me it has the limit of 1300 sms, I am not sure though
3- Class2 micro sdhc , sandisk is for 1500 rs. Buy that , it will be more than enough for 720p video recording
4- It has Tv out functionality. The cable does not come bundled. You have to buy it seperetely. The one that nokia provides with its high end phones does work fine with Wave. I have one and tested it with Wave.

5-No idea about DLNA feature. It does have DLNA ,as most phones these days do have it. No idea how it works but that wont be too difficult to figure out.

6- No idea about that. But I was able to download NFS on my Wave which is being given away free by Samsung as promotional offer.

What does your phone show as the model number (S8500 or S8500L)?

Hi everyone...

Congrats to the current owners of Wave. I'm looking forward to buying this phone really soon.

I've a few questions though, please help me clear out my queries/doubts...

1] Are there really 2 Wave models i.e. with 2GB & 8GB internal memory?

2] Is there a limitation to the SMS/Contacts storage? I'm asking this as the details/specs of Wave on 'Samsung Mobile' websites of different countries (links in attached text file) is different and varies a lot. Also some say as the SMS capacity as 590MB, somewhere as limited to 1000 SMS, 2000 SMS, etc. I also downloaded the manual from the Indian site & there it clearly shows that the SMS can be transferred to the memory card. Is this true?

3] I'm also thinking of buying 16GB card along with the phone as 32GB is still not available here. So should I buy microSD or microSDHC? Also what is the minimum class of card should I buy (I mean class4, class6, etc) for worry free 720p video recording?

4] It has a TV out functionality. So which cable does it use/require for the same? Any model number for the same as there are no supported accessories mentioned on the website & it doesn't come with one.

5] Has anyone tried the DLNA feature. Does it require any other accessory for the same (I guess not)?

6] When I went to the SamsungApps store of India there is only option of S8500, but when I use Kies v1.5.1.10071_32 (downloaded from Samsung site) to download any app, there are two options to choose from i.e. S8500 & S8500L. So what is the difference between the two? I searched a lot and found the only difference being that S8500L is for the South America while S8500 is for Europe. Also there are other versions too (in all --> GT-S8500, GT-S8500L, GT-S8500B, GT-S8500L, GT-S8500_MEA_JT) Found this on DLNA website.
BTW you can change the region in the Kies software after installing as many number of times as you want. I've done this a number of times. The way to do this is as follows:
BTW Wave supports Java and as I read somewhere Opera, Google Maps, Snaptu, etc can be installed & used on Wave.
ok :) hmmm.. to ans your questions

1) yes there are 2 models (2GB and 8GB) and 2 colors (ebony gray and metallic black). Im not sure if the 8GB one is launched in india yet, but its there in europe. The metallic black color looks the better out of the two but many people ( at least in bangalore) cannot find it. get the black one if you can.

2) The wave has ~550MB dedicated for messages, so thats the limit. There is no option in the phone to transfer the messages to the mem card. In the message settings menu you have the option to store on the sim or phone, the option for mem card is not there.

3) I will be buying a 16GB card too soon. I'm not sure about the classes etc so perhaps another member can answer that.

4) yogi mentioned that the TV out cable for a 5800 works for the wave too. Should be able to get it easily.

5) I have not tried DLNA so cant comment on that.

6) The full model no of the phone is GT-S8500, the other variants must be region specific with minor changes in software.

Re: Samsung Wave S8500 India release??

Had been looking for a new phone, and Wave is increasingly becoming my choice. Does any bangalore shop have an open piece that I could see for a live demo? Also, has anyone tried setting up BSNL/MTNL 3G on this phone?

Re: Samsung Wave S8500 India release??

better buy a SDHC card, hopefully class 4 if you can, :)

how to change country region :s

Re: Samsung Wave S8500 India release??

Tv out cable- its nokia CA- 75U to be exact. The model no shown is same as @soumalidon posted. About memory card I dont think you can find 16 gb class 4 microsdhc card for cheap. What I am using is Class 6 8gb transcend micro sdhc which I got for 800rs without bill.

@wordsmith - I am using it with MTNL 3G , but haven't received the settings for that , hence cant comment. Once I get hold of that I will report back regarding that. But I dont expect to face any issues in that regard. In terms of connectivity this beauty rocks, BT 3.0 , wifi n etc ..

Picture of Tv out by my lovely N86

Looks like the cable I got with N85 is somewhat damaged. I hope its working alright :)

Re: Samsung Wave S8500 India release??

@kanishk619 - Yup. There was a dealer in Lamington road who got hold of some stock which was imported. No warranty but its genuine :)

Re: Samsung Wave S8500 India release??

ok Jus got the gps working :) as someone already mentioned, download the sync software from route 66, install it, plug in the phone in mass storage mode, download the India maps (243mb) from the sync software, wait for it to copy to phone, open the navigation software on phone, go to more then road maps (the India map should appear), select the map and sync the licence keys. now go outside and wait for it to pick up the satellite :) it doesn't work indoors so make sure you're outside. the digital compass works nicely. routing works too but had prob wit navigation(asks for key). good to know it works. oh ya found out somethin about the media browser too. when you open the media browser and then go to the task manager, it shows and then you can go to the menu and the browser will still be in the task manager. but when you open the media browser and then press the menu key, it will not appear in the task manager when you open it.
