Seagate Dockstar Discussion and Tutorial Thread

1. Yes it will work for Dockstar as well.

2. That is the new kernel that I have compiled. It supports Dockstar as well as Goflex. I have included the drivers for Realtek wifi adapters just like Gorgone's but last I checked his kernel did not have the drivers for my 3g modem so you will have to update the kernel for your modem to work.

Yes the guide is similar and you just need to alter the interface names as you are using wlan. I haven't tried running it as an access point to share over wifi which will need some configuration changes. Only the drivers are included so running it as a client or access point depends on how you configure it.

^ No, it never crashed for me. But facing some issues downloading from Rapidshare, maybe the plugin is not working. But Megaupload works fine.

Will give rtorrent a try then, although transmission is working fine, stable and speeds are comparable to what I get on uTorrent etc.

@kuduku : If you use the kernel posted on my blog, you will have to set the arch number to 2998 only then the LEDs will work. In case of Gorgone's kernel the arch number is preset. The arch number is basically a way to let the kernel know the nature of the device so that it can load device dependent features correctly such as LEDs, SATA ports etc.

Lets say i am not interested in LEDs then no problems

Just update with jeffs script ?

why dont you make a new kernel with 2.6.39 as others have made in jeffs forums

Boot debian from SATA – Seagate GoFlex Net - VARKEY

if you are free ...

Ya, but setting the arcnumber is just one command. Why not do it. :-P

If you are running an older version of uBoot use Jeffs script to update it and then update the kernel although an older uBoot will work just fine.

Yes will try to compile a newer kernel, it takes an hour to compile it on my laptop! :-(

@maddy_in65

How did you compare speeds on deluge and transmission ?

deluge is utter slow when compared to transmission, when I have tested once.

@maddy_in65

I will try for a luck this weekend, going to try deluged and deluge-web once again, lets see.

Last time I had some errors in init scripts, so i couldn't start it as a daemon.

--- Updated Post - Automerged ---

have tried making NTFS partition from webmin interface ---Partitions on Local Disks

but still no success

--- Updated Post - Automerged ---

finally success

made it ext3 then full permissions

but NTFS didnt work

^ Were you using ntfs-3g or a kernel level driver? Sometimes if the drive is not safely removed from Windows it will mount it in read only mode. Anyway if the disk is for dedicated usage with a linux system first remove NTFS and use ext3/4. Why use ntfs when you can get pretty good file transfer speed using Samba itself maxing out the limitation of USB. I easily get 22 MB + through Samba on a Gigabit network.

Never needed a GUI so not sure about that, but I think you can easily do almost everything through command line and Webmin :P

can someone ulpoad their iptables who has done internet sharing through lan port

tried varkeys guide but didnt work out

i have usb evdo modem connected to internet

ppp0 , connection name evdo

i want internet sharing through lan port

will connect lan out to WIFI router in

so that other devices can have internet through WIFI or Lan port of router

tried this

How-To Configure Seagate FreeAgent Dockstar as a 3G Gateway - VARKEY

and this

Debian User Forums • View topic - Sharing internet

and many others

but no success

if someone has done this type of setup

or any linux guru can guide me on this

either upload a working iptables and files required or

tell me the commands to do so

in both the guides above

LAN of dockstar has to be on DHCP or static ?

i tried keeping static , still no internet

DHCP same results

router ip 192.168.1.1

^ That is exactly what I have done. I have connected the Dockstar to my wireless router and is working fine.

See, on the Dockstar you need to setup a static IP and once you have established the ppp connection, you need to set the gateway to the IP of the dockstar on your Desktop.

I can help you set it up if you want through TeamViewer, let me know.

yes i am in

i am out right now and dockstar is not with me

will pm you once i am back in with dockstar

lets say static ip of eth0 192.168.1.20 on dockstar

its a router E2000

so i plug dockstar lan eth0 to router internet in

now what ?

Ok. Yes then connect the Dockstar to one of the 4 LAN ports of your router, and then manually set the IP address on your Desktop or Laptop and gateway should be the Dockstar IP ie 192.168.1.20

but the 4 LAN ports are for internet out

For internet In their is a dedicated port

or internet can be shared with those 4 also

i am little confused here in this port matter

gateway is clear , i was not doing it

will put the gateway

but can i add this gateway in router so that i dont have to add this manually in all computer/laptop

adding gateway thing will be a pain in axx

i have a mobile also so settings will have to changed at all times
