Just got the 'factory unlocked' - iPhone 4.. Have to cut the SIM yet so haven't tried it along with SIM..

Do I need to apply any of cracks i.e gevey sim/booster sim/ Ultrasn0w etc ?

Just wanted to know if there is any beginner's guide to iPhone..?

I haven't used iPhone/iOS earlier in any form..Hence not versed with most of the things/terminologies.

So I'd appreciate if someone could point me in right direction i.e Dedicated Guides/ Forums etc for to utilize the maximum potential from Iphone.!

Thanks..!
Hey, i also got a factory unlocked phone few days back. You have just connect it to itunes to get started no need to do anything. I also got my sim cut at the shop itself who had the sim cutter thingy. You can also see some guides on youtube about cutting the sim if you want to do it yourself but i will suggest you to get it done at some shop who have the sim cutter or if you can wait you can ask you service provider for micro sim.

Regarding iOS it will take just 2-3 hours to get familiar, its very user friendly and damn easy to operate :)

Edit: just check which OS version the phone has if it has old OS update it before using so it will save the hassles of again backing up everything and installing apps again if you want to do it later. In my case the phone had 4.3, still i updated it to 4.3.1 before using :)

Okay. I made up my mind to buy iPhone 4. But my friend, who owns Captivate and never used iOS, says iOS is boring based on his friends' experience. "My many friends saying it's boring after usage of 5-6 months" Is it so ? :ashamed:

Secondly, I wouldn't mind waiting till June. Can I expect price of iP4 16GB FU to be 25k ?

not sure wether prices related queries should be discussed in this thread. If not, I request mods to move out this post

iOS can be boring for two reasons . 1) You do not jailbreak and have those awesome apps which make it completely addictive and the best entertainment device. 2) You don't want to jailbreak and you are not even ready to install paid apps .

These are usually the 90% of dumb (no offense :P ) iPhone users who buy it ,install some free -trial apps .Use it and then get bored of it . If that's what you also plan to do then you might as well avoid it . If you are ready to explore the various options after jailbreak ,nothing beats it :D.

2 years iOS. Never been bored of it. Cydia apps still amaze me sometimes.

and what about my other query ?
If Apple launches iPhone 5 this June itself (a bit unlikely) then yeah you might find some software unlocked iPhones for 25kish but FU , I doubt will go anywhere below 29-30k even after 3-4 months.

I would expect the prices of iPhone 4 to drop by $100-$200 when iPhone 5 launches.

As of now everything points to a release in Q4 2011, which also seems optimistic considering production of iPhone 5 is rumored to have not started as yet.

Apparently this year's WWDC is an all software event. Most likely the launch of iOS 5 or similar.

So launch in June/July is highly doubtful, unless apple has really fooled the world media.

waiting till June will be my best shot. Even if they don't launch iPhone, still I expect prices to drop.

So I chose to wait :)

@Dipen. You dont need apply any unlock or crack. coz your phone is Factory unlocked. Ask your service provider they will give microsim for free. :)

But you can Jailbreak via redsnow. Which version currently running on phone ?

Modmyi and Hackint0sh are nice forum to get most out of it from your iphone.

Jailbreak / Downgrading / Upgrading

iPhone
Current version - 4.2.1 (8C148)

Baseband - 03.10.01

Strangely for Carrier, it says - Vodafone India 9.0

Anyways, I haven't connected it to iTunes as of yet. Was just familiarizing myself.

Some Doubts :

1) Do I need to updrade to 4.3.1 ? (It having different effects on battery life and so on.)

2) Which will be most convenient/preferred Jaibreak method ? (These were some - redsn0w 0.9.6rc12, seas0npass, Greenpois0n, PwnageTool 4.3, Sn0wbreeze 2.2.1, Sn0wbreeze 2.5.1 )

3) Is it permanent or its like Software MOD ? Have to apply it every-time after Restart ?

4) I googled and found tethering/untethering etc. But I am still checking up on, how baseband is relevant for Jailbreaking ? (in my case when - I have factory unlocked piece)

5) Finally, what are the other steps that a new iPhone user need to take to get the best out of it ? (akin to Tweaks )

Thanks a lot, :)

1) Unlock and Jailbreak are both different things. Your iPhone is factory unlocked means it will work with any carrier even if you update to latest iOS. Jailbreak means you can have complete access to your iPhone's filesystem as well as install any 3rd party apps.

You can read more on jailbreaking here .

iOS jailbreaking - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

2) Apple has just released the latest 4.3.2 which is not yet Jailbroken. So you might have to wait or you can settle for 4.3.1

I dont know about battery issue with 4.3.1 though.

3)Step By Step guide will help you. :) For Windows - Redsnow For MAC - PwnageTool

iClarified - iPhone - How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 4 Using RedSn0w (Windows) [4.3.1]

4) You dont have to worry about it if your baseband get upgraded when you update the iOS since your iPhone is Factory Unlocked. You can read more about tethered/untethered from above wiki.

5) Jailbreak it and you will have awesome cydia to tweak. :D

I would suggest you to save SHSH blobs of your current 4.2.1 so in case in future if you want to downgrade back to 4.2.1

You can read more about what is SHSH BLOBS here

What is an SHSH Blob?

And here is the software that will save your SHSH. TinyUmbrella.

The Firmware Umbrella - TinyUmbrella

Good Luck ! :)

Thanks again..:)

Few final doubts until I actually Jailbreak (can't download 666 MB IPSW file, due to bandwidth issues :P ) :-

Ok,

1) What are the must-have accessories for iPhone ? : As in to protect from scratches of any kind etc etc. (Currently there is scratch guard on both sides, thats it) -Scratch Guard/Cases - Their prices/availability ?

2) Post Jailbreaking, will I be to able to install the stand alone games released exclusively for Ipad/Iphones (Honestly warez apps n games) or only installations will be done by Cydia ?

Thanks :)

You can put scratch guard on the front and back.

After jailbreak you can install apps from app store or from cydia, but i won't suggest doing a jailbreak. i have done many times on my 3G and 4 but still i prefer a non jailbroken one. As the apps are very cheap most of them are .99 and only few are expensive but even those are under 5$. 4.2.1 jailbreak was ok but i have done 4.3.1 unlock on my friends iphone 4 and he says it has become little slow and sometime phone does respond when receiving or making calls.

^^ Honestly if you are not facing any issues, wait for iOS5. And ya even if you jailbreak you can install itunes apps/games without any issues.

You're probably one of the few who don't JB an iPhone. The apps on cydia make iPhone so much more that apple has made it capable of.
