Just beautiful.

You use macro modes for such shots or just zoom and focus?

As for getting a better lens, I first wanted to get a hand of the camera and the settings and improving on the photographic skills. Might get a 50mm in near future. Any suggestions for the same?
 
You can combine zoom with macro. It usually gives a shallower dof. And added advantage is that you can focus on the subject from a distance..

The dragonfly was shot with a 55-250mm IS lens.. No macro mode in it, so its just the zoom alone..

A 50mm prime would be good. Plus a tele like the 55-250mm or 70-300mm. BTW did you buy a new 450D?
