^ Yes it appears Crucial support is handled by Prime. You will be best served by the Samsung drive :)
The 128GB MX100 is sadly not available here AFAIK. Some other 128GB Marvell controller drives : Sandisk Ultra Plus (mentioned above, was in stock last week), Plextor M5s, Adata SP920 (a rebadged Crucial M550)

On a side note, there appears to be some confusion with Samsung themselves not sure about the support chain for SSDs : https://www.techenclave.com/community/threads/rma-experience-for-samsung-ssd.167931/
Can someone else check?

Not in stock anymore at anywhere near its old price unfortunately. :(

Plextor M5s, Adata SP920 (a rebadged Crucial M550)

Don't find either of the two appealing TBH.

AMD's also launched its SSD's today in collab with OCZ. Sandisk also recently announced its new Ultra II series. Its really hard and extremely confusing to choose a good, VFM SSD in India. :(

I emailed TE requesting that a dedicated thread be created specifically for SSD's on the same lines as the "Best PSU" thread under buyers guide...

Thing is, I know next to nothing about SSD's because I have never owned one myself. In fact, I have never even seen one in action for that matter.

It would make far more sense if someone who had knowledge about them were to start and moderate the thread. That way, the readers would be assured of sound advice. Maybe you can consider doing it yourself? :)

Been reading up a lot about SSD's since my earlier post in this thread, mainly because I want to buy one myself and am pretty much clueless about them.

@vyral_143
I may just have found a drive that meets ALL your requirements but you will have to stretch your budget by another Rs.200.This is never ending TBH, because for another Rs.1250/- you can go for the Crucial MX100 256Gb with double the capacity and so on.

Anyway, the drive I refer to is the Plextor M6S 128GB SSD. Its currently listed as "in stock" for Rs.6,200/-.

The drive comes with a Marvell 88SS9187 controller & 20nm MLC NAND (Toshiba) with Seq Read speeds up to 520MB/s and Seq Writes up to 300MB/s. Here is a review FYI -

Also found a very interesting post regarding SSD failure rates.

This is from Marc Prieur, of hardware.fr and are SSD failures rates according to a French E-Tailer as of April 2014:
- Samsung 0.54%
- Sandisk 0.70%
- Kingston 0.72%
- Intel 0.90%
- Corsair 0.91%
- Crucial 1.08%
- OCZ 5.66%

Its interesting to see that Samsung actually has the LOWEST failure rates of all SSD vendors. The failure rates are based on parts sold between April 1st 2013 and October 1st 2013, for returns before April 2014, which represents 6 months to one year of usage. The statistics per brand are based on a sample of at least 500 sales.

I actually found it a bit ironical that Crucial has TWICE the failure rate of Samsung. I would have thought it would be the other way around considering Crucial SSD's use SLC (Single-Level Cell)/MLC NAND which are supposedly "more reliable and longer lasting" whereas Samsung uses the somewhat maligned TLC (or 3 bit MLC if you want) NAND on their popular drives.

In fact, if you visit the Micron homepage, they appear to have such a poor regard for TLC for SSD's that in their Technology usability chart, TLC is not even mentioned as appropriate for SSD's and is instead relegated to devices such as USB Sticks/Media Players & Mobile GPS! :p

Note however because of the small sample size, these numbers aren't representative of world wide failure rates. Even so, some info is better than nothing IMO...

Thanks buddy.

I had got that itch of getting a Crucial one at 7500; but holding myself till now. I will take a final call on SSD once I have replaced PSU in my hand - which is possible either by tomorrow or Tuesday. Hence most probably I would be able to assemble back my rig next weekend. Let's see.

Well I took the plunge and ordered the Crucial MX100-256Gb. I had to buy it off onlyssd.com because Primes site does not list this particular drive.

Also FYI, I called Prime voice and spoke to them about the drive. They said they only have TWO pieces left (via onlyssd.com) of which I have bought one. So if you do want one, I would suggest you consider ordering it soon...

So again update time:

Called up prime to ask when Sandisk Ultra Plus II will be back in stock. I got to know that it won't (said "woh band ho gya") and now there will be some extreme series. So now finally ordered Crucial MX100 256GB. :sunglasses::hearteyes:

Congrats! Let me know when you get yours. BTW, since this is my first SSD and you have used them before, is it okay to use a drive migration tool to transfer the OS or is it better to install the OS from scratch? I would really like to do the former TBH provided there are no downsides to doing so in terms of performance. Any idea?

The Crucial MX100 is said to ship with "Acronis True Image 2014 OEM Edition PC Backup and Recovery". I'm familiar with Acronis having used it for several years before I switched to Paragon. However I'm not so sure whether its advisable to clone my old hard disk and restore the image to the SSD this way. I believe Samsung ships special software with their drives which is said to be very reliable for OS migration.

Guess I will read up on it tomorrow...

I'm on a 10+ year old Seagate Barracuda ST380011A 80GB drive! I have 3 of them, one each with Win7, WinXP and Ubuntu installed. I swap the power connectors depending on which OS/drive I currently want to access.

The cool thing is that there is not even ONE BAD SECTOR on ANY of the 3 drives till date. They just don't make stuff today like they used to eh? :p

Once I get my Crucial MX100, I will consider retiring 2 of them as "data backup" drives. Will keep the Ubuntu one as is though.

Currently reading up on SSD fresh installs vs OS migration. Interesting link for anyone else who is curious -

Called up OnlySSD today; I will get my SSD earliest on Thursday. New imported stock have arrived today but yet in their warehouse only. Shipping will take place tomorrow evening.

One thing to note/mention, person on call is very helpful/polite and explains everything calmly.

Send them an email earlier today asking for the status on my drive 'cos they said it would be shipped on Monday. No reply so far. :(

Guy said that on Saturday when ordered it was in stock but on Monday in store it sold out. Hence they could not have shipped yours. I guess you should be able to get yours by weekend.

Erm, BTW - Amazon ships the SSDs internationally as well.
I'm getting a quote of 16k for the 512GiB MX100 from Prime, direct pickup from their shop. It's coming to 15.7k delivered from Amazon.
Too small a difference to order from Amazon specifically, but might be worth it for some drives which are more difficult to find here.

Yeah !! I could found base price for 256GB as $112.99, which would be roughly ₹7000. Adding shipping duties will make it somewhat similar. Plus for support I just need to contact Primeabgb/OnlySSD instead of Crucial directly; so that headache is covered, if required ever.

^Yep, that shouldn't be an issue - SSDs are damn reliable, in my experience. Laptop, tablet, desktop.. all running SSDs, no issues.
Unless of course, it's an OCZ... :P
