Just installed 64 bit... after some fiddling I was able to install drivers for all of my hardware... was impressed with that. The only problem is that when giving me an overall score for hardware I am getting 2.9 on read/write for hardrive. Was getting much higher with vista... methinks there needs to be a better driver so I am going to try install Nvidia 680i chipset and motherboard drivers.
Installed on a laptop or desktop?

People are reporting low HD scores because of missing SATA drivers for some chipsets.
Try the troubleshooter in the Devices and Printers. Read on a blog that it managed to install the SM Bus drivers which Device Manager couldnt!

Damn thing killed my hackintosh installation in no time , wasted my whole day reformatting & installing OSX & windows Vista again.
But hey , my love for a mac is way more than any of this windows business
 really..For all you love for hackintosh you didnt know installing again will spoil the setup?
then again only changing the active partition would have done the trick..
Dont blame windows for it..:P

Yup that was what I was trying... the nvidia smbus driver for vista 64 installed without a hitch... but hasn't made any difference at all. :)

I am on a Nvidia 630i chipset but my HD score is 5.7! But i installed the SM bus driver which came on the Motherboard's driver CD.

^^ Actually the Vista x64 driver installed just fine and the hardware is listed properly in the device manager. I am not really seeing a whole lot of difference in the way my system is running. I assumed there was a problem because of the low score but perhaps the "Windows Experience Index" program is getting a complete misread and it is a bug as my score was considerably higher in Vista :)

To be sure everything's fine, do some file copying / moving speed tests. I hope you remember your Vista speeds.

must be the fastest OS install ever under 20 minutes on a blank partition

even installed my pinnacle tv tuner 110i driver

onboard network controller not installed by default

boot up and shutdown is quick probably because OS is not loaded with additional installs

anyone know how to shutdown cleartype before beginning OS installation ??

its really disorienting !!!

I absolutely agree with that point its like whatevers wrong with the world is coz of Windows or MS, precisely why I have posted a thread which I think will go into this kind of topics.

Read this and then go to my other post which is here,

what is the fresh install space? i have 8GB on C: and was hoping its enough.

Ive upgraded from Vista with the partition having 6GB free space and was left with the same amount of space after the upgrade completed.

BTW im allready falling in love with Win7!

alsiladka

I decided to try W7 after reading your post and seeing what other comments were... Thank you I am glad that I did.

So honestly... I have been trying to migrate away from XP for some time. I have all of my progs installed on xp 32 and haven't bothered with 64 because of driver issues and have not been totally happy with Vista. I decided that I would install a bunch of OS's and test them out to see which I was happier with.

I currently have a multiboot with XP32 / Vista64 / Ubuntu64 (8.10) / and now Windows 7 x64

.....using grub as my bootloader

Ubuntu (or other Distro's too) is is a no brainer, I love Linux.... but honestly I need windows at the moment to run certain programs. I will always have a Linux Distro installed to use for everything else.

And DarkStar and others... yes I know there is wine and I can use it, but some stuff I just need windows for (even though I wish I didn't :P )

XP 32 although comfortable like an old pair of sneakers, it is starting to behave like an old pair of sneakers too and I really need to use the memory I have and take advantage of my quad Q6700.

Vista... What can I say. I have really tried to like this OS and there is no doubt that it runs my important software faster than XP, we all know it is more of a resource hog.... but my system can handle that too. There are so many little things that I do not like about the way it works and so many annoying little screen nags and minimum requirements etc.... I won't continue to rant and rave, but needless to say I am not amused. :)

I briefly tried XP 64 and just overwrote this OS with Windows 7 x64 Beta. I am impressed after only 3 or 4 days. I have yet to spend more time getting into the nitty gritty of this OS, but I am very enthused by what I have seen so far. Ok so there are a few issue's at the moment, there is a problem with my SATA drive and drivers... maybe. For a Beta, W7 was able to install nearly every driver that I needed, and if it didn't have the driver I found that windows update would locate one for me as long as the hardware was plugged in. That said...... this is still only Beta and I expect that the final version will also be much improved upon too.

I am excited by this new OS (It is about bloody time Microsoft) and I am actually looking forward to the prospect of finally making a complete switch away from XP.

alsiladka Thank you for this thread, it was a great idea :D

That was an honest thanks pixelpusher :)
Appreciate it.

Did you try your motherboard manufacturer supplied drivers for your SATA drive and chipset? Even if you have installed Nvidia's drivers, try out the motherboard cd too. It worked perfectly for me!

Hope you enjoy your Windows 7 experience and dump XP for good :P

Same drivers.... EVGA uses the nvidia drivers for the 680i mboard :P

I presume the manufacturer's mod the drivers sometimes. Was just suggesting you to try them out, though if they are the same, you are sadly stuck like this till Nvidia releases the preview chipset drivers :P
