BSNL 3G Thread

@ggt :D dude I can understand ur feelings . In my area in Pune BSNL is the ONLY wired bb available and in wireless only Tikona, reliance and GPRS/3G players are available.

I know man.
Mtnl linemen have been the worst to provide support in my area.
So no mtnl wired broadband.
I use only MTNL 3G and reliance 3G though :P

guys....

Just FYI....i am getting 600KBPS in torrents since last 24 hours....its been 5 days since I recharged and my total downloads have reached around 125GB:)

Hi guyz,
I purchased a BSNL 3G sim with 3 month UNLIMITED plan started from 16December.
I was using my nokia 5800XM as 3g modem in my laptop with windows 7 ultimate OS.
Currently i am in Ganganagar (near RT Nagar)Bangalore.I was getting different speed at time of downloading. But the main problem was, in network monitor graph i found that downloading keeps on disconnecting and auto resume ,in each 10-12 seconds.
Later i purchased Huawei UMG 1831 [SAD no voice suport ).Got better speed then 5800XM but the problem is still same .
I am attaching a pic regarding this problem ..Please suggest me what to do

So there is definitely something wrong with the modem! :( :(

@Supra & @Dushie - I believe you have the UMG1831 as well? Do you face any symptoms like this?

^ Yes I just connected my UMG181 and everything is back to normal. So its definitely something to do with the UMG1831 modem. :( The issue is same when using Windows as well, so it is not a configuration error.

When it disconnects, the modem loses the signal and tries to register with the network again. Can be understood from the led, also I checked the logs and it seems the device gets reset when this happens ie like unplugging and plugging it again.

I got my UMG 1831 modem today, will get sim card tomorrow,

what softwares do I need and from where to download, links please.

TIA.

My friend wants to buy a new BSNL SIM for 3G.

So which SIM should he get? Blue, 256KB 3G SIM?
It costs Rs.59 right? He will be doing a FRC of Rs.120(1 week free UL 3G?) and test speeds for 1 week before going for a Data card and Rs.4200 recharge.
Is E122 available anywhere at reasonable price. Also how good is the Idea 3G modem thats on sale in ebay?

Hi Varkey

Nope i have not faced any such issues and it has worked fine. i just leave it on at the night and even if it disconnects it reconnects automatically and connection is on.

There are couple of things you can try : -

1. If you are connecting through a usb cable, try swapping with another cable and check.

2, Try putting the modem in another port at the back of the pc.

3. Try plugging in the modem directly at the back without the usb cable.

4 In usb Hub properties in device manager uncheck the option of allow windows to turn off the device to save power.

5. Also create a dial up connection with redial option to dial out and put the initialization string in the modem properties in device manager.

6. You can also do firmware update of the modem form the link : Huawei T-Mobile UMG1831 Modem Software

7. I am using MDMA along with dial up connection to monitor the signal, performance and data bandwidth.

I am using the latest firmware and not facing any issues with the modem.

Currently i am using the latest firmware.

Please try updating the firmware and see if it helps. Also try connecting the modem to a different port.

What is this initialization string and why is it needed ?

I think this is the initialization string:

at+cgdcont=1,"ip","bsnlnet","",0,0

I had saved it from some BSNL website. But I am not using it. Not sure what it does.

Ok, so updated to the latest firmware and still the issue remains. Tried both on Windows as well as Debian. :( On Windows the Mobile Partner displays the message saying the modem has been disconnected and after few minutes it shows the Detecting Device message.

I'm not using any cable, the modem is directly connected to the USB port. Tried the front and back USB ports.

What to do now? :help2:

^^ try reinstalling the drivers ie mobile partner if you changed your usb ports from what you originally used to install to resolve the issue of detection.

Uninstalled Mobile Partner and installed the latest version from DC-Files, still the same problem. After 2-3 minutes, the modem disappears and and comes back after 2-3 seconds. I think it's a faulty piece. Have already PMd dvdstoredelhi, waiting for his reply.

The SIM with cost Rs 59 (Blue 256KB 3G)+ FRC of Rs 120 will give you one week UL 3G data. Try eBay for E122 data card.

^^ Posted here for the info, that you don't need FRC120 for one week download, any FRC will have the same one week download plan.

I got a new sim today, did an FRC of 67, got Rs35 as talktime, one year validity and ofcourse one week unlimited download :)

Now one more question to Trivandrum specific folks. In which BSNL office is the blue 256KB 3G SIM available? Is it available in the Pattom office?

Mohit, the reason for creating a dial up connection in windows is for dialing out automatically during disconnection.

Also MP is a heavy software and does consume resources in the system. hence i don't use it that often.

I use MDMA to track the speeds, signal strength and data downloads. The MDMA connects using the dial up connection made in windows and this ensures. When i leave my pc on overnight, the internet is one and if there is disconnection it will get connected automatically.

I am also providing the steps below how to create a dial up connection.

This works for me and should work for you,

1) I assume that you have installed the bundled software inside the USB 3G data card and you can connect the 3G internet form it AND the device is connected to the system.

2) Open Device Manager. The "HSPADataCard USB Modem" should be listed there. Right click to open properties. In the open window choose the "Advanced" tab. In the 'extra initialization commands:' enter at+cgdcont=1,"IP","bsnlnet". click OK to close the window.

3) From Control Panel open "Network and Sharing Center". From the left hand pane click "Change Adapter Settings". You should see a dial-up connection for your 3G Modem.Right click and choose properties. Select the "General" Tab. In the Phone Number box enter *99# Create a shortcut to the dial-up connection on your desktop. (If not you will have to create Dial-up connection in "Network and Sharing Center". See bottom of the post)

4) Select the "Options" tab make changes as follows :

Check "Display progress while connecting"

Uncheck all others.

Enter "Redial attempts" 99

Enter "Time between redial attempts" 1 Second

Enter "Idle time before hanging "never"

Check "Redial if line is dropped"

Click OK

DONE!

Right Click the dial-up connection and click "Connect"

Your internet should be running now.

Now windows automatically attempts to connects to the modem if line is dropped.

Yes i believe it may be a faulty modem. As a last option , can you try using the same in another pc or laptop, maybe on a friends or neighbors machine.

It may exhibit the same behavior there that would help in confirmation and closure of the issue. Then you should get a replacement from the seller , i believe he offers 6 months warranty on the modems.
