BSNL EVDO - have some queries about speed and charges

Well I cant take hassle of buying from usa etc. rather i think i should find a device in India with external antenna port or maybe someone sell their Sierra or Novatel Aircards.
Getting from US and configuring requires little effort . Its a gamble really with old cards as new Sierra 595U are not available these days . So its better you to buy any non branded Chinese EVDO RUIM card with external antenna port

There are new sierra 595u available but i wont buy anything outside from India. Well, the problem is most seller ship to USA address only which i don't have.

Thank you for the reply. Can Sierra 598 or novatel 760 be unlocked and used with BSNL EVDO? i think with Sierra 595U we may face lack of battery availability after some time as it is an outdated product with no support from the parent company.
How much did it cost u for a single 595U inclusive of all costs?

^ I guess the device will still work without the battery maybe with a decrease in performance. You can always purchase the battery from the US too.

I got my Sierra 595U for about 1.2k all incl, it was only 12.5 USD for a brand new modem from an Amazon seller. As a general rule, just add around 700-800 Rs as international shipping and customs duty to the item cost.

@varkey, If Sierra 595U works without battery with drop in performance then i think its not a good deal for me. Modem is one time investment but battery part is many(uncertain) time investment and that from USA. Apart from that I dont see any 'Great' use of a battery inside a modem. USB provides enough juice for a modem if not, using a Y cable will do a better job along with a high gain antenna. We need performance and if 595U was any innovation then latest models of Sierra or Novatel would have batteries inside their modems, but that's not the case.
Ok, I'm more inclined towards Sierra 598U or Novatel U760, prefer Sierra one, it looks cool. My concern is : Can Sierra 598U be unlocked to use with BSNL EVDO? I found some guys here have a good knowledge of unlocking devices so it can be a great help to me.

Thanks kuduku for replying to my PM.

hayabusa_ryu if you would had gone through the thread completely than all your queries would have got answered . Dushie recommended the same to you earlier also . All your answers are here . We think that there is 30-50 % increase in signal while using the Sierra 595U Till now no Rev A modem has been able to compete with this google it .It was discontinued atleast 5years back and still available . Others dont have battery because while you are mobile no body wants to carry a bulky heavy device . My battery has lasted 1 yr and now it has swollen up but still running . That one year has been 24*365 downloading so i think poor battery has served me adequately . If people are ready to spend from 1-2k per month for 2Mbps unlimited then 1.2 k for a modem is not a lifetime investment. Even if it runs for a year it has proved cost beneficial . Generally you can buy all Verizon branded devices with eye closed as there SPC is always 000000 . I said generally , till now i have got 7/8 verizon devices all had SPC as 000000 . Sprint always changes the SPC so you have to buy the unlock from ebay . Novatel I am not aware . As i said in PM also use find a modem for $10/15 dollars and buy it with help of ICC , still will cost you 1.2k only and these are available at these prices on ebay.com you have to be lookout

Well I found some Sierra Wireless deals on ebay but devices with sprint tag costing very less
Sierra 595U (Verizon) : **NEW ** VERIZON SIERRA WIRELESS AIRCARD 595U USB MODEM | eBay

Sierra 598U (Unbranded/Original product) : **NEW ** SIERRA WIRELESS USB 598 BROADBAND MODEM | eBay

Sprint Deals(595U) : Amazon.com: Used and New: Sierra Wireless Aircard 595 USB Modem for Sprint/Nextel

BTW, I use an antenna for my ZTE device.

Thank u for ur reply again.
I already have 2-3 3g modems lying idle(it costed me high caz i bought them when 3g launched) and I cannot afford to buy another EVDO modem which may become idle after sometime due to lack of battery availability. Hope u understand what i mean.

^ You can get any Sierra 595U, Sprint or Verizon. You can easily reset the SPC code with the reset tool (which was posted few pages back)

Agree with @varkey its very easy to get the modem and set it up, all the guys here are there to guide you and as recommended by @kuduku all the steps are given, along with the links for downloading the tools and what version to be used. Ordering a modem from US would cost around 2k including shipping and customs. Otherwise you can suggest the options giving by Kuduku for trying out Chinese evdo modems or other local modems.

One final question, why u guys recommending 595U over 598? There is not any comparison available between 595U and 598U. 598U is newer(new chipset, making it smaller) and i think it will be better than 595U. i dont have problem in buying 595U but I've read about battery issues online. It's hard to predict life of an used product.

I just found one review where the user is recommending 598 over 595.
I previously had a Sierra Wireless 595U aircard and thought it was pretty good. However, the Sierra Wireless 598U is better in every regard than the 595U. In comparison, the 598U is smaller, gets a stronger signal and can do faster speeds than the 595U.

Dude here we know what to do witht he 595u & we have all the tools to get it working so why you want to get some other device & experiment with something new when we had so many successful experiments with 595u

Please read carefully the link you have posted . 595U shines in weak signal locations due to the battery . If you are sitting in a good signal location than all data cards are same barring few .

If you get 595u, we have masters and guru's here of that modem like @kuduku & cisco_tech who have thorough knowledge. I also got fair bit of knowledge after troubleshooting the same along with Kuduku. It's better to invest 2k in a product which you can get to work and will give satisfactory performance. I do not have any knowledge on the 598U. Battery would not be an issue there are plenty available on ebay to last for the next 2 to 3 years. Also even with a low battery it does work and same has been confirmed by many.
If you want to experiment, sure you can go ahead for the 598u but do research if there is an option to flash and get it running on evdo.

I ordered one AC30 from US which is lying with me and it not yet unlocked or activated. We are still trying to see what best can be done with it. Post which i bought another one locally supplied by Tata, which i am using as backup and very happy with the service.

Ok i got it, the only reason u guys are recommending 595U is because 595U is easily unlock able and no one has played with 598U yet. Thank you guys for your kind responses. I already have a ZTE device so i think if i buy 595U i can do everything alone without going to BSNL EVDO office for ESN etc etc, right?

If your ZTE device is unlocked, and it can read the sim details in cdma workshop or dfs, then you just need to capture the details using the tool and flash the same on the 595u using the flash tool and the dfs software.

This is my present signal result using the old device, BSNL ZTE AC8700(no RUIM). I hope it will surely improve with newer devices.

@kuduku : Thanks for your idea,i flashed my Nexus S, currently it is working with Bsnl evdo. Signal strength is 2 bars and it is catching evdo signal, so not bad deal for timepass till i get Tata working on this.
