BSNL EVDO - have some queries about speed and charges

^ kuduku : I believe the AC8710 is Rev A, I have the same modem which I got with my Tata Photon+ connection.
c0n. : You will need to connect the modem to your PC and use any tool such as DFS and enable the RUIM slot. And it will be much easier to just get a prepaid CDMA Voice connection which is RUIM based for Rs 40 or so and test the speed, rather than asking BSNL for a demo. You can activate the UL data pack on the same sim.

specs show Rev 0 but might be wrong and you have done it so would be correct . As far i have used BSNL 8700 it has real poor speeds and download speeds . Even micromax one gives better speeds

Hi,
All ordered the AC30 from Ebay for 35$. Yesterday was a friends place and he had the same modem which was working with both CDMA and GSM sims. Is there a firmware out there which can make this happen. As i saw it myself, first he used a indicom sim and then took it out and used a gsm sim in the same slot. Both the time the internet got connected and speeds were good. I have been searching online but no luck in finding any firmware for this.
You said firwt he used a Indicom sim then a gsm one . As Tata also has GSM want to confirm whether TATA sim was ruim or GSM sim . TATA is also giving the same device on their website .
firmware updates

and that russian forum also has the download link

I agree with kuduku i am using Ac8700 and the speeds are nothing great to write about. Dunno about AC8710. My Sierra does a better job with much higher speeds in the same place.

Also on my AC8700 even though i have enabled the RUIM slot, it detects the indicom sim and i can read all the sim details in DFS, but in ZTE dialer it does not show any network and does not connect. As i wanted to try out the same. So as kuduku suggested better to go for any other modem rather than this one. Most of the places BSNL does have stock of 8700 and is still selling those to EVDO customers.

Both Tata sims were working in the same tried indicom it worked and tried Docomo it also worked. It was good sight to see, first we put the cdma sim and it got connected and worked great. Then we took it out and plugged in a Docomo 3g sim and it connected on 3G and was giving very good speeds. Also previously this seller had couple of other modems which he sold that were unlocked which would support any CDMA or GSM sim in the AC30.

I am getting a Verizon locked modem so guess it would come with the Verizon firmware already installed on it.

Thanks for the links,Tried the first link it goes to a page after clicking on download i am getting this update :
Fivespot End User Update Tool (v1.0.0B10).exe (21.9MB) : Is this a firmware update.

The second and third links are just redirecting to each other front and back and not taking to the firmware download section.

Anyways will hold on till the time my modem reaches and then would jump onto this. Also is there any localized Indian firmware for this as this modem was being sold by couple of providers like Tata and MTS. I looked around but did not find any local firmware update options.

yes i am using that and thanks for confirming that RUIM and SIM both work in ZTE . I never tried that . My ZTE AC30 is on this firmware only and airtel work fine . Today i will try something else but no other sim , will have to scourge from someone and update you whether its locked or not . Its was SIM locked , but even after SIM unlock it doesnt have apn for all GSM provides of India . Now to get the cdma RUIM and try that . You can download your friends firmware which is all apn locked and flash on yours . There was a link somewhere to download existing datacard firmware for backups . Will check and post here . ZTE AC 30 there will be 2 issues SIM unlock which is available on dc-unlocker but adding apn has not been possible . The link i gave in last post doesnt work on mine . Dont update your firmware if its working correctly

Regarding BSNL 8700 - after RUIM unlocking i could never use EVDO on RUIM . It was always on 1x . So again locked the RUIM slot and made4 it EVDO capable

Thanks kuduku, once i get my modems the first thing i will try and test is the existing firmware that verizon has and see what all works.
Also if you are able to find the link for backing up existing firmware. I can ask my friend to create a backup of his AC30 on which both indicom cdma and docomo 3g sims are working fine. When we tested the tata indicom sim it was working on EVDO speeds and docomo on 3g speeds.

If this works i don't mind picking up a indicom cdma sim just for using it on this.

Well thanks for the quick reply both of you guys.
In fact I have done some research before I posted here and I am going to try EVDO just for the kicks as I already have alternate connections.

I just happened to have a AC8710 lying around. Reason as to why I did not mention my research beforehand is because nothing came of it :(

As far as I know its a

ZTE AC8710 CDMA HSD

Rev O standard according to CDMA Workshop (Although I clearly remember that Reliance guy telling me its a upto 3.1mbps service when I bought it back in 2009, I never bothered to take a demo that time)

It does not have a sim slot.

I cant seem to figure out what I got on it because DFS doesn't let you do anything if you have the unpaid version and QPST shows the following information:

ESN : *edited*
SPC: 000000 (Not sure about this QPST shows 000000 but when i try to unlock RUIM via CDMA Workshop it says phone needs SPC code)

Cant figure out what to do next

First remove your esn and never post it online . Second no one here has purchased DFS , free one work fine . Open qpst or dfs
DFS , put any username and password , it will give account error but functionality available is enough
top left SPC with a play button , press it after you have selected diagnostic port of your modem from port manager . Check the log if it says modem unlocked your spc is 000000 otherwise something else
QPST read from phone , pop up window comes up with spc as 000000 . Do it , if it reads the phone gain spc is 000000 .

Did the same with DFS and the log file reads like this:
ZTE Diagnostics Port FFF1 (COM8)Activated
ZTE Diagnostics Port FFF1 (COM8)request to open port
ZTE Diagnostics Port FFF1 (COM8)Open
ZTE Diagnostics Port FFF1 (COM8)request to close port

Alrite, havent progressed any further in unlocking my AC8710. Still stuck at figuring out how to find SPC number for the modem.

Meanwhile, I went to BSNL office in the afternoon today. They dont seem to have any EVDO modems in stock here.
Do you guys have any idea about unlocked modems working well with EVDO available commonly (on flipkart etc.).

I have brought back a form that I need to fill to get start up kit for RUIM for Rs 40, I will be going back tomorrow to get the RUIM, in case this 8710 doesn't work, what do you guys suggest i should get.

@Dushie I checked it CDMA RUIM is not readable . Are you sure your friend model was ZTE AC 30 only . And BSNL SIM didnot work out WIFI way . I could connect to internet through usb cable modem type by making new profile with bsnlnet apn but no success WIFI way . It dosnt have the BSNL apn . I will today look for that link of firmware download but please confirm whether its ZTE ac 30

You can go for Micromax 310c it is availabile online on flipkart and other stores, its a good modem. Bsnl also has few models like Prithuvi and capitol which are available.
kuduku: i just spoke to my friend again and he said that yes it's an AC30 model and the one we tested at his place, both the Tata CDMA & GSM sim were working in the slot. I tested that myself. Also if we can get the software for copying firmware then he can ask the person who he sold the modem to for using this software and posting the firmware in which both sims work for any provider. If all goes well i should have my modem next week and i can try flashing the firmware on it and testing it. Sim's would not be an issue as i have bsnl, airtel, tata and reliance sim's with me.

Once you get the software just email me the link would forward him the same to create a backup file.

Google it, you may be able to find it, i did it last year, there was some trick in capturing and figuring out the same, don't remember it as of now.

See if this helps : -
http://www.bsnlevdoclub.com/forum/unlock-for-modem-zte-ac8710-t-1045-2.html

cisco_tech can help if you need anything from there.

I am still trying to remember how i did it.

Found the steps, try below this should work, i used these to figure out the SPC of my photon EC1261 data card

So I will show the methods here to help you to unlock their Tata photon plus modem..
1. First of all You need to download DFS 3.3 From CDMA Tool. DFS software - professional cdma tool
2. Install it on your PC
3. Connect your Tata Photon Modem to USB Port
4. Open DFS software and Click on Ports button
5. It'll show you how many ports used to connect the usb modem
6. Just double click on the Port where the Application Interface has connected. (Not the Modem or PC UI Ports)
7. The port will connect and show you greened. Just send sometimes the wrong SPC by pressing the SPC button on the top
8. Once connected the software automatically reads the data card details
9. Go to Memory > select EEPROM and select memory size as 16x128 and press show button. (If any error message shows ignore that.) After some times save the Buffer using SAVE BUFFER Button.
10. It'll shows you the physical address where the data’s of the modem stored.
11. Send a wrong SPC Code by using the SPC Button on the top of the window. (eg. 000000) 11. on the right side of the Memory panel select SPC1 and in the result text box it’ll show you the physical address of the Pin in hexadecimal format. The first six digits is your Modems SPC code. You can change it to 000000( Hex eg. 30 30 30 30 30 30) and send the SPC code as 000000 once again
12. The modem will show you the result “UNLOCKED”
13. Then you go to Programming Tab and in the SPC Text box type ‘000000’ (hex: 30 30 30 30 30 30) and Press the Write button. The code has been successfully written to your modem.
14. Now you’re done unlocking.

Or Use CDMA Workshop Tool And in RUIM setting there are 4 options 1. RUIM ONLY 2. NV ONLY 3. RUIM IF AVAILABLE 4. GSM 1x
You have to select RUIM only or RUIM Pref.

Using the above settings i was able to get the SPC code for my ec1261 as the default code did not work. It took a bit of time and patience as lot of times i was not able to capture the buffer. But after few attempts it worked.

Best of luck ... see if this works, there was one more way of doing this but not able to find those steps.

kuduku i installed the winimage, but unable to understand how it will create the backup image the can be restored on the modem. As far as i understand this will help in creating a backup of the dashboard and will not help in creating a backup of firmware.
