A good new and a bad news :( I got the device today but the seller has wrongly shipped the Ipass Sierra 598 instead of unlocked/original Sierra 598. I have contacted the seller, just waiting for his reply.
Please tell me guys is it possible to unlock it?
PS - All ruined due to the seller's mistake but i m not blaming myself for the purchase.

Not understood ....ipass is a company like verizon and sprint so modem must be ipass branded SO ? It is 598 only or not ? All CDMA modems in US will be some company branded , OEM modem are difficult to find in US

Well its IPASS branded Sierra 598U. @kuduku u can see in the pic, the item shown is factory unlocked device, same has been accepted by the seller too.

Well I'm getting EVDO signal for 5-10 secs once I plug-in the device and after that it start searching for EVDO signal forever. Neither I can connect to EVDO service in any case. I dont know what m i doing wrong. The steps I did
1.) ...............
2.) Changed Everything on NAM Tab of Sierra as exactly to that of ZTE device.
3.) Uploaded .prl from my zte device to Sierra 598
4.) Presently i'm stuck at Data tab of Programming
I think my device setting is not getting registered on BSNl EVDO server.
Any ideas guys?

It's still without external antenna. I have not found a proper antenna connector yet in the local market.
and You dont need the antenna. You and I have same RSSI. always between -45 to -53. So whats your current speed ? Post some screenshot of IDM and speedtest result.

Guys I am out of options with wired broadband because of my area coverage, I am from Royapuram(north Chennai).
I want to get EVDO, the ultd option looks very affordable.

Will I get good speeds in my area? Is there a way to check that?
Should I get the default data card given by BSNL or should I get it from outside (budget for this max 1.8k).

And that RSSI was in daytime. I'm yet to check my RSSI in night. I hope to get -42 in night. My RSSI is now always between -44 to -47. I get a good speed What's ur current internet speed in IDM etc?

The only way to check EVDO signal strength is to borrow evdo from ur friend and check speed at ur place.

@kuduku I am running out of HDD space. downloaded quite a few HD rips of movies. People always amazed to see why the heck someone is using Sprint Dongle in India ? Ha ha ha. I do get tons of question whenever i use it in public place. :D

But this 5955U is quite a datacard . I am loving every moment of it . I had gone to delhi sometime back . Wanted to use internet so took it out and started using it . Somebody i knew and comes and ask which connection ? . Normal reply BSNL EVDO . He replies but there is no signal i just checked . And i show him , download speed of 150 kBps . Says impossible i just checked mine and i will get my laptop and datacard . He gets his BSNL ZTE 8700 and the only signal he is catching is faint 1x . So i am fully fascinated with my data card . Everything depends on tower but still it gives 50% improvement to all other data cards

Well I think I abused BSNL much with 2g-3g trick. I bought 2 dongles & 2 antennas for that and used to get 300-350+kBps & 200+kBps speed(other low due to interference). I had bought 2 TB HDD(I already had 1 TB which got filled). I have downloaded 40 GB in one day (and out of that 36 GB from rapidshare alone), avg was 30GB+/day. I took screen shot of that but it got deleted when my HDD went kaput. And I deserve that because BSNL also abused me much before that. :P
After sometime like 2 months, I didnt have anything left to download according to my choice. Now I dont like downloading 24*7 even if I get similar speed like @cisco_teck or you can say I hardly download anything (maybe 1hr when required) or just watch youtube videos. My daily usage even doesn't cross 1GB/day.

I can tell u why, it's not because of particular data cards rather its the build quality of the data card. I feel modems available with BSNL EVDO is not good as compared to Sierra/Novatel/Huawei. I have used both ZTE AC8700 and Sierra, And now I can tell the difference. The available bsnl evdo device will work best with full singal strength and less users and then I think both Sierra or BSNL device will work alike(we have seen here that Prithvi modems also get 350-370kBps speed).
Im more curious to know difference between Sierra 595U and Sierra 598U. :)

ask @Dushie , he has 595U and ZTE 8700 . He will tell the difference for both at the same place and same signal . 595U was always ahead

Went through the whole thread, seems everyone is suggesting the Sierra 595U, buts it ain't available in ebay/amazon.

So Whats the best alternative data card for BSNL? Or should I get what BSNL gives. (budget ~1.5k)

I think its available on Ebay USA and amazon. Even if you buy a Sierra 595U either you need a RUIM based EVDO device (from ur friends etc) or ESN based device(which u have to buy from BSNL) to check for settings, that's my thought, let other ppl comment on it.

Off topic.
Personal Thoughts :
My main points why I chose 598U over 595U(not to offence anyone) :
1. Battery Issue : 595U is an outdated product so finding battery after sometime will be a tough task or quite expensive & I think some batteries available also be outdated with old stock.
2. Performance : It's very good as I saw in many reviews.Currently, it's one of the best devices available in the ISP market(595U not supported any more). Two people outside the forum suggested me to go for 598 but they told me that because of battery, not for performance issue.
3. Design : That is so beautiful, the glowing lights look COOL.
4. Size : Newer generation with better chipset resulting into small device with equal or maybe better performance.
5. Good Deal : Got an unlocked device deal. If i didnt get unlocked 598U deal I would have bought 595U because it very tough(actually IDK) to unlock 598 and do extra things.
Finally, I can be the only person in India (as per as this forum and other BSNL EVDO forums) using Sierra Wireless 598U. :)
