Namco and From Software in an attempt to kill their own game; Dark Souls PC to be locked on 30fps

A while back, we wrote an editorial about the features that should be included in the PC version of Dark Souls. These features were important – in our opinion – and it seems that Dark Souls PC won’t support any of them. Not only that, but the game is said to be locked on 30fps. Wait what? A third person game that is a pain in the a**, where movement is essential, and will be locked on 30fps?

That was revealed in Famitsu’s interview with Miyazaki. As Miyazaki said, the PC version would be identical with the console versions. A straight port with no change in resolution and he specifically says not to expect 60fps. Oh, and don’t expect any kind of optimizations for the PC. As Miyazaki said:

“Yes, It’s basically a faithful port. There’s no change to the resolution.

The frame rate won’t be 60 FPS.â€

We don’t know whether or not Miyazaki is aware of the PC hardware and its capabilities. If he’s not, then the framerate won’t be locked. If he is, which seems to be the case here, then the framerate will be locked indeed on 30fps. Bad move Namco and From Software. Really bad move.

and we're screwed, royally. The whole purpose of porting this over to PC was to gain frame rate stability with improved visuals. Heck, they could port everything else at 1:1, but why the f*ck can't they provide variable frame rates? I hate to be a moaning PC b**ch, but this is seriously a dick move. For those who haven't played it on the console, would not know how poorly the game performs in some areas *cough* Blighttown *cough*. This is what was mentioned in the initial petition too. Hope someone figures out an unlocking technique.

lol. That case is different but somewhat similar to that of Dark Souls. While DSs will feature online features, modding the single player game is no problem. But if the modders (unethical ones) decide to interfere with quality legit online experience, they might face "the law".

Now that, I expected. Namco doesn't have an dev team which is experienced in the field of PC games. Still, they still have the time to reconsider.

From Software "having a tough time" porting Dark Souls to PC, frame rate issues remain

Dark Souls developer From Software is having a torrid time getting its beloved action RPG up and running on PC and has confirmed it isn't including any optimisations for desktop gamers.

Producer Daisuke Uchiyama told Eurogamer that it had underestimated how tough it would be to port the game across."To be completely honest, we're having a tough time doing it due to our lack of experience and knowledge in terms of porting to PC. First we thought it would be a breeze, but it's turned out not to be the case. We're still developing right now - we're crunching right now.

"In Japan there's not much of a PC market and we haven't really taken into consideration that audience before. That's one of the reasons why we haven't been able to step up on the PC platform until now."

Uchiyama went on to confirm that it hasn't fixed the frame rate problems that had hobbled certain parts of the game on consoles.

"In terms of the frame rate for say, Blighttown, From Software sincerely apologises for that happening [in the console version]," he said.

"In terms of the PC version, the quick answer is no, [we won't be fixing the frame rate problems]. Because we wanted to get the PC version out as soon as possible, it's more strictly a port from the console version. We haven't been able to step up into doing any specific optimisation for PC.

"However, in exchange for that, we have prioritised adding new content for both original players and new players."

"We are fully concentrating on delivering the PC version and DLC. There has not been any discussion about anything past that. So there's nothing in the works right now," he said.

"Speaking from the developer's perspective, even considering the new Wii U features or the Vita, because they are so specific to those platforms, if we were able to do something on those systems the game would be designed to fit those platforms rather than just be a port from the PS3 or 360."

Dark Souls PC – 1080p support, 30fps lock option, major fps issues even with Nvidia GTX 6xx cards

Get ready for some bad news Dark Souls fans. Yes, the game is coming to the PC and that’s what most of us have been asking all this time. And although some of you misunderstood From Software’s statement about the ’720p resolution’ restriction, we are happy to report that the game supports resolutions up to 1080p. As we said back when that information got out, From Software was obviously talking about the game’s assets resolution and nothing more.

However, PC gamers will not enjoy an ideal and smoothly gaming experience as the game has major framerate issues. In fact, the E3 PC demo was really choppy. What’s really disappointing here is that Namco has been using an Nvidia 6xx series card for their demonstration. According to its Facebook page, Namco is featuring its new EON11-S and its High-Performance Desktops will be running NAMCOBANDAI Games’ highly anticipated games, Star Trek and Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition for PC. These PC configurations are equipped with a GTX 6xx series card, so get ready everyone for really awful performance when this game comes out.

Last but not least, the E3 build of Dark Souls: Prepare To Die Edition featured a frame rate setting, which was set to 30 FPS, a Window/Fullscreen mode and an Anti-Aliasing Option (with On and Off settings).

They don't expect anything. This is just a rushed answer to the huge uproar created by the petition. I bet, once it comes out and if the performance issues would creep up, then the backlash from the PC community would be staggering. I empathize with From Software for being honest about facing difficulty for PC development. They are right on their part when they say, Japan doesn't have a huge PC fanbase and hence less platform coverage. I mean their last game was Ninja Blade for PC, which was again a straight console port, but had marginally better options on the PC. I don't mind if they don't include DX11 and all those fancy features, but locking the game to 30fps is a deal-breaker. I'm still holding this one out. If it's f*ck up, I still have the console version to sulk back to. :P

I know what you mean, but seeing a disaster PC port is one of my nightmares.

They should delay the game if they want to, but not break the experience. Why play a game on 30 FPS on PC?

Crap this would be really bad! I do respect the devs. for being honest there but why not delay a bit more and see if they can get things right? This is going to rake in a lot of criticism from around the world. First, it was GFWL, then the 30 fps lock and now the frame rate issues.

GFWL is out the window. I think they are going with Steamworks. Also, some claim that the 30 frames lock can't be removed, without messing up the game, as the engine's physics rendering was coded to work at 30fps. I'm not sure what this means, or what are the technicalities involved, but if this is true, then it's only From Software who have the ability to remove this lock. Furthermore, the physics is provided by HAVOK and I am yet to see a title, which has used this physics engine and has struggled on the PC. The only other option would have been to outsource the game to be ported to PC.

I dont understand what is the problem with you guys with 30fps.I would say that if the game has 30fps STABILITY then it would be alright. But if not. Then there maybe problems.
