Hey guys,

This being my first post, my apologies if I'm stepping on anyones toes. I already took a look at the december pc buying guide, and was looking for a little bit more information.

I'm looking to get a new PC, and am seriously considering shelling out, between 70K-100K on an upper mid level to a budget high end system.

Can someone give sound advice on what specific components I should be targeting?

Here is a general overview of what I want to purchase.

Please provide some advice on what the market price would be, and how to best go about purchasing them in Chennai. I know there are specific shops that can build your pc from scratch, but I'm not sure whom is reliable, and if they know what they're talking about.

CPU: Intel Core i7-920
RAM: 6GB DDR3
HDD: 1TB
MOBO: Gigabyte or Asus...which is better, which would you recommend.
GPU: An NVIDIA 512-1024mb card...Haven't kept up with the latest graphics cards for the last 4-5 years, so I'm not sure what would be a good mid to semi high end card. All I know is I don't want an ATI product. I would be willing to go for a 1gb gpu if it fits the budget.
Cooling fans: What kind do I need?
Disc Drives: Dual drives...1 Blue Ray Burner and one DVD/rw
Sound Card: Soundblaster XiFi
Monitor: 24 inch HD LCD...Samsung? Viewsonic? Dell?
Chassis: What kind of tower do I need, which are the best in India, and are they available in Chennai?
Mouse/Keyboard: I'll probably go for one of the logitech wireless bundles, but I've heard a lot about Razor? Are they a subsidiary of logitech, or an entirely different company? Should I just stick with what I've had experience with? (That being Logitech)?
Ethernet: Standard network card or maybe a wireless option if available...
Media Card Reader

I'm actually pretty computer savvy, but since haven't been in the loop for a while, my knowledge is pretty outdated.

If you guys could provide the pricing (for each component), and give me a rough estimate of how much this system would cost me, that would be very much appreciated.

cpu - good to go :) (15k odd i guess)

ram - Get the ram from the newegg. contact kmd for it. wait for others to post suggestions on the specifics.

hdd - avoid seagate 7200.11 1 tb drives. (check the 'storage solutions' section for details)

Mobo - wait for suggestions :|

GPU - Why don't you want an ATI gpu? ati and nvidia are pretty much on par on most terms currently. Options 4870 1GB(17k locally, 15-14 via kmd)/GTX 260 Core 216 (21k odd locally, 14k via kmd)

Sound Card - Xonar DX (current hot fav.) (5k odd locally)

Chassis - You can get coolermaster stackers for 8-12k (hit up coolermaster.com for further details on models).

LCD - Dell E248WFP is a nice screen.(20 odd k locally)

Mouse/kb - wireless don't really cut the ice when it comes to gaming. Better stick with wired options. Razor and Logitech are competitors. Razor has more of a gamer oriented focus in its products. They have some real good stuff like the Lycosa keyboard and the Deathadder rodent.

Ethernet - comes onboard. you could get yourself a nice wireless router if you need one :)

All pricing is VERY rough. wait for more inputs :)

Hello :)
According to your specification the approx price will be
CPU: Intel Core i7-920 Rs 16000~17000
RAM: 6GB DDR3 Corsair XMS3 18000~19000
HDD: 1TB Seagate 6000~7000
MSI X58 Platinum Rs 17000~17500
MSI ECLIPSE SLI Rs 24500~25000
Cabinet : coolermaster{HAF ( Rs 8000~8500) /stacker (Rs 12000~12500 )} or Thermaltake Armor+ Rs 12500~13000
Keyboard+mouse : if you want performance then just go with Razor (but it's not a wireless at all ) otherwise Logitech is good enough...
Monitor: you can try LG also But Don't buy Veiwsonic at all:)
Nvidia: 9800GT 1GB Rs 11500~12000

Thank you....:)

Hmmm...I'm not sure I'll be able to order off newegg.com...Arent' they a US site...I was looking to purchase all the products locally.

Whats KMD?

So would western digital be a better option
as opposed to seagate?

Xonar Dx? never heard of it lol...I'd prefer to go with something I'm familiar with... being Soundblaster...But if you can provide some links proving otherwise I'd be happy to look into it...

For the chassis can I get the coolermaster locally? Whom would be the retailers I should contact?

This chap is a dealer here on TE. he sources stuff from the US (amazon/newegg/etc..) and delivers it to you).

You'll have to pay a 25-35% premium on the prices listed on the sites.. it'll still work out cheaper than indian prices in many cases.

Only hassle is, in case something conks off, you'll have to pay to get it shipped back to the US for replacement.

xonar is from Asus :)

Chennai Dealer - Delta Peripherals (http://www.deltapage.com)

ps- since you claimed to have been a lil tech savvy, you can google up most of your queries :P

I'd advise you to wait Q9550 is going through price cuts and will be at a brilliant price also pairing that up with a Gigabyte P45 + 4GB RAM and a good GFX card with decent cooling will be cheaper and also quite fast I believe...

If going for an X58, go for EVGA only. Check newegg customer reviews of all X58s and you'll know why.

CPU - Intel Core i7 920 @ 2.66 Ghz

Motherboard - EVGA x58 SLI

Video Card - EVGA GTX260 (216) x 2 SLI / GTX285 / HD4870X2

RAM - OCZ 6GB Kit (3 x 2GB) DDR3 1600Mhz

HDD - Western Digital Caviar Black 1 TB

PSU - Corsair 1000HX

Case - Antec 1200

Screen - Samsung t240HD

Speakers - Creative Gigaworks 4.1

Mouse - Microsoft IntelliMouse 3.0

Surface - SS QcK

Keyboard - Microsoft Ergonomic 4000

Did i miss something out ?

Thanks for the tips dude...

About a couple of your suggestions...

Stalker says don't get seagate, so is there a consensus on that? Or is it debatable?

Also whats wrong with viewsonic? They used to really reputable. ..

Whats the processor speed for the Q9550.

My main goal here is longevity...Trying to get the quickest processor, or one of the quickest, and atleast have it last for 4-5 years without conking out. The last system I bought, was a dell dimension 4300 in 01-02...That was a P4 1.7ghz, 256megs of ddr 2, 80 gb hd, 64mb geforce ti200...which played games really well for the first 3 years...

And Thats fine by me...I want to be able to play up the latest games for about 2-4 years, and then just used it as a homepc later on...

If turns out to be more expensive..
Go for a cheaper screen. (Viewsonic , Benq)
Buy a 3GB Tri Channel Kit
Leave out the speakers for now

Wait for a while , 1 month or so.. price will drop by a decent margin.

Lol, thanks man...True, i could look this up, I was on the phone speaking to a freind....Sorry about that dude...

Segate has been lately churning out some bad 1 TB drives with buggy firmwares so just get a WD one. Its equivalent to Seagate or even better in some aspects.

For the monitor I'll suggest Dell S2409, a full HD panel with awesome colors, I've seen it in person and IMHO it blows all other 24inch TN panels.

Viewsonic has particularly bad A.S.S. so just stay away from it.

Ah...Gotcha, thanks for the tips. And I'm guessing the Dell monitors can be bought locally...Theres nothing preventing it from being available at local retailers?

Hey stalker, thanks for that Delta peripherals webpage...I see taht most of the components are avaialable there, except for the mobo, and sound cards. Are there any other reputable chennai dealers who have websites I can visit? If not any phone numbers for well known shops?
