^ Out of the box as in out of the box? I don't think iPhone comes with a lot of useful apps pre-installed. I might be wrong.

Dude , IOS device come with nothing but I dont have to eat around my head in the internet before I start using my device.

Which Android phone Out of the box is better than Iphone 4 ?

Which Android phone Out of the box is better than Iphone 4 ?

Trying to post as neutral as possible.

After using both ios and android, I can say that one can either love it or hate it. Both have their own pros and cons(we all know that).

But ios always wins in simplicity, ease of use, no headache, complete peace of mind and that's what people actually need.

I am all into custom roms and stuff but after some time all these things become a headache and for an non geek user- simplicity peace of mind and flawless UI is the way to go.

Android still not able to come to same level in terms of stability, UI and optimization.(Mind you android was never made to compete with ios. It was made with primary objective that it would run on different hardware and android has succeeded phenominally in it)

Android is not everyone's cup of tea and neither is ios. I love ios but I would never say that android is mediocre. Saying that either of these two suck or are mediocre is just not right.

Well, there is no doubt that Apple has been successfully selling mediocre products though marketing alone. If Microsoft or Google had released the the exact same tablet or phone that Apple did, then they would have flopped utterly. Even the best of technology would flop without appropriate marketing and even the most mediocre stuff can be sold successfully with appropriate marketing. Only a heavily marketing centric company like Apple can afford to push mediocre products and still manage to sell them with great marketing. Most companies are following suit and even otherwise, there is a reason why companies like these only devote 20~30% of their budgets for the technology and innovation and over 60% for marketing.

I know many guy's whose iPads are gathering just simply for the reason that they find no particular reason to use them. So why exactly did they buy one in the first place. Its not because they needed them, its simply because of how they were brilliantly marketed as a magical device. Often people bought them and tried to justify the purchase by trying to find uses for them. As a every day technology user, I do find the need for a portable device like a tablet appropriate, but none of the tablets in the market meet my basic requirements that I need them for and iPad least suitable of them and it is so for a lot of people, but people still buy them due to the way they are marketed as a 'magical device'. People often repeat the marketing manta of iPad being magical, but ask them specify how exactly they use the device and what makes it magical and most people would not be able to put worth a couple of ways that they use it and that makes it magical, but instead they would dumbly repeat the marketing mantra that its just magical. That is what marketing can do.

Just to give another example of how marketing works, just look at Retina Display. LG like many other companies was working on small size high resolution displays for a while and Apple happened to use it in their iPhone 4. Instead of just saying that they use a high res display, they created a marketing buzz word Retina Display and got people hyped about Apple over technology that they had nothing to do with. High res displays are great, but it is nothing special as many companies have been working on demonstrating such high resolution displays. But by attaching a marketing buzz word, they created hype among people half of whom don't even know what DPI means. That is how their marketing works in selling their products.

Well,i dont think the iphone 4 or the 4s is mediocre, ipad 2 certainly not and macbook pro's are the best in the business.these are the best selling apple products around and you would be stupid to call them mediocre because they are well and above the competition.not only through design but also in terms of simplicity and functionality.so i dont get your argument of mediocre products getting brilliant marketing and that being the reason for their sales.tomorrow if i am in the market for a smartphone, the 4s would be one of of my choices;if i am in the market for a tablet then hands down the ipad 2 and if i am in for a notebook then the macbook pro will be one of my top choices as well.

You seem to have a pretty narrow view about the ipad consumer base.ipad 2 has been very influential in education and certainly made my multimedia life a whole lot better.it is the ultimate ultraportable machine you will find.i see you target it as it being not doing what your basic needs are but i also happen to understand your failure to mention the same.so let me put a spin on the basic needs of most people

Browsing - emails - multimedia - social networking - ebooks

And i am pretty sure when i say this that ipad 2 does this the best of all my devices, better than my pc,macbook, note and ip4.a mediocre product cannot do this.

The whole magical funda of the ipad was that it helped people with disabilities to understand and comprehend basic education which was not possible via the pc.that is always a good initiative.apple has always been at the forefront of this type of innovation and simplicity.assistive touch being the most fabulous asset in ios for people with dissabilities. Here is a fantastic article from the newyork times for the same.

http://pogue.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/11/10/apples-assistivetouch-helps-the-disabled-use-a-smartphone/

If Microsoft or google had released the ipad then it would have been a hit as well, because great products become hit no matter which company releases them.this bullshit about everyone buying a product just for a logo is an utterly stupid point.some may do it, but most people are well informed and take considerate decisions when buying a product.

The problem with the iPhone is that its strengths are its weakness as well. Very very bad weakness at that.

Specially in developing countries like ours where we are still waiting for mass adoption of high speed mobile internet access.

For the first time in years, I am using iPhone for long period (using it for 3 weeks now), and its simplicity is its curse. There are moments where you wish the damn thing had simple bluetooth transfer so that I can get some precious moments shot by one of my other family members on his Nokia N8 during one of the recent family trips. It was 100mb video and I couldn't get it on my iPhone and had to whip out my Note(4S jailbreak was not out then).

Sure with jailbreak this is not a problem but then whole point of iPhone just working out of box which most iPhone users use it as a driving point in their arguments against other operating system becomes a moot point.

Not to mention frustration of being tied to your computer to do complete media management is what irritates me the most. This is why I gave up on Windows Phone 7 few months back. And it is already frustrating me.

There are other simple things like ability to edit simple things like you APN settings and APN in general which is taken away from us in 4S.

Integration of google with iOS is still miles away from the experience you get on Android. And its not something that you can say that it does not matter anymore. Gmail, google maps has grown to an extent where these things matter more than social networking integration, SIRI or Facetime. The experience on iPhone though very much improved recently still remains that couple of steps behind Android.

Now coming to other point that has been brought up here. You DO NOT NEED to root your Android phone to customise it.

Dont like the stock launcher? You can simply go to market, select one of 50 odd launchers available in the market and get completely different experience from your phone. No need to root or load custom rom for that.

Rooting most phones is as easy as jailbreaking your iPhone at the moment with most phones getting one click root these days.

To be honest, out of box, Android is much more powerful platform than iPhone. In fact its easier platform to use than iPhone as it works out of box, and if you want to tinker around, you can do that too. I am giving Apple fair chance to change my mind by using their greatest offering at the moment and there are still lots of things that I can go about (camera settings or rather lack their off, video formats, handling of high bitrate videos, relatively weaker push mail compared to other platforms, weaker browsing experience).

And I am not even bringing up the screen size as frankly you know what you are getting yourself into when you buy iPhone.

There has been significant and noticeable improvement in quality of apps and specially quality of games available on Android in last 6 months but this is the only part where I can say that iPhone has significant advantage in terms of library over Android.

The only thing I like about 4S is that its perfect as a second work phone for someone who must carry 2 phones like myself. Then it makes a lot of sense. Perfect size, perfect form factor for that purpose, but spending 40k+ for that is something that makes me feel guilty. And never before I have felt guilty buying and using any gadget. I am not disappointed but just mad at myself for using iPhone at this point. And I cant explain where the damn 40k is going when I look at the phone. I simply cant find answers to that when something like SGS2, Note costs soo much less than that and even phones that have this form factor like Ray are available below 20k. It simply boggles my mind that as a consumer I am paying this much for a product that should be costing something close to or below 30k. And I feel guilty every time I pull this out of pocket

I will get into my mac experience some other day as the list of things I find annoying about that is longer ( with solid 2 years of Unibody use)

Weaker push mail?

I thought I broke my bosses 4s pushmail after an update, but all of a sudden it has started working like a charm.

As a matter of fact gs2 is giving me a lot of headache with emails.

The default email suddenly stopped working.

K9 did not work properly with the corp.mail id,droidmail had started fetching mail with headers of older mails(could be a potential disaster if I was not careful)

Hell! I could not even find a reliable alarm clock in the market.

Think will go back to some old symbian phone...which does these basics perfectly and costs atleast 20k lesser than 4s(which unlike Android gets the basics done perfectly)

Regarding BT FT,yes!it is essential and Apple can implement easily ootb, but they wont do it.It is their arrogance they are proud of(a feat MS will never achieve)...their prime driving force...my way or the highway...and why the hell even they care if their phones are selling in millions(even with such a huge pricetag!)

Yup, its considerably slower.

Even with gmail (even when configured as exchange and not gmail ) its few minutes slower on iPhone.

Get instant push updates on my Note, but iPhone is always late. This happens with everything. Its like it has mood of its own. Sometimes notification will come just minute or so late, sometimes upto 10 minutes late.

are using Yahoo mail, dont even bother trying K9. K9 has never worked well with Yahoo. The developer simply has not got around to fix issues with Yahoo accounts and the way it pushes mail. And Yahoo has issues with multiple email clients and not just K9.

K9 works flawlessly for POP, IMAP. If you are facing Exchange issues, check if your company exchange server supports WebDAV. If not, thats the reason you are having issues with K9.

Thanks Shripad will check with our it guy.

I wont survive without proper pushmail service.

I have 2 iphones and after sometime I may have got bored of iphone but it is the strength of app store on itunes that keeps me going, as I keep on trying new apps.

Now I know others have got online store too now but apple got the lead in the starting and is now reaping the benefits of it (just like airtel though airtel has gone from bad to worse these days)

All you guys who say Apple is brilliant at marketing lousy products, just read the article below.

Do you think that a company with lousy products can actually achieve what Apple has managed to do?

http://articles.econ...hone-steve-jobs

Here are some of Apple's numbers in context:

PACE

$13.1 billion is Apple's profit in the latest quarter.

Equalled their revenue in Q4 2010-underlining the pace of its growth, despite its size.

A company this big (Apple is world's most valuable) is not supposed to be able to nearly double revenue year-on-year. Nor are they supposed to more than double profit. But Apple did both.

VERSUS MICROSOFT

It was only in October of 2010 when Apple passed Microsoft in terms of revenue. In the latest quarter, its revenue was more than double of Microsoft.

COMPETITION

Apple sold three times as many iPads as Amazon sold Kindle Fires, and at twice the price!

PERIPHERAL IS BIG TOO

The iTunes Store of Apple alone generated 50% more revenue than all of Yahoo did last quarter.

iPHONE = MICROSOFT

The revenues from just iPhone (one product of Apple) is greater than total revenues of Microsoft. And iPhone was launched only in 2007 end.

VERSUS GOOGLE

Apple's profits for last quarter exceed Google's entire revenue for last quarter.

CASH COUNTER

$97.6 billion in cash and equivalents.

$ 64 billion of that is offshore.

Apple's cash hoard alone is worth more than all but 52 companies on Earth.

PROFITABILITY

$13 billion Apple's quarterly profit on $46.33 billion revenue.

WHITE VERSUS BLUE

$108 billion - 35-year-old Apple's revenue at end-FY11.

$106 billion - 100-year-old IBM's revenue at FY11 end.

In 1981, Apple's revenue stood at $ 335 million, while IBM's revenue in the year was $29 billion.

When IBM launched a PC to compete with Apple in 1981, Steve Jobs mocked at IBM with a full page ad in WSJ which said "Welcome, IBM. Seriously"

Actually the issues people facing are real, but probably not the fault of phone or ROM but rather common mistakes made by people or simply because they dont know about certain features.

Most people having alarm issues are

1. Either using task killers which end up killing clock app and clock getting killed at wrong time = nightmare.

Solution : exclude clock from task killer or better, stop using task killers and memory purging programs, they are waste.

2. ON samsung and unknowingly enabled smart alarm on their Galaxy series phones without knowing how it works.

Solution : Disable smart alarm or go to youtube and search for samsung smart alarm. It works differently than traditional alarm clock.

Its not really down to lousy products, but incomplete products sold under pretence as being the best in the market that annoys most people who absolutely hate apple for that.

Every couple of years I end up giving Apple one more chance and end up regretting it. iPhone is actually most tolerable product Apple makes. iMacs and Macbooks is entirely different story.

There are couple of people who are working in creative content creation areas right here on TE who have worse stories than what I will ever have to say when they made Mac switch. But I will leave it to them to put that forward themselves some other day.

Personally, I find the Macbooks insufficient as a device on which I can totally depend on. I have a Macbook unibody late 2009 and at that time it was probably the best 13 incher in the market with student discount which I got thanks to student ID of my sister, but it has been 2 years of constant frustration and struggle every now and then since then.

I love the design, hate the operating system. And no, I did not buy MB to put windows on it. I bought it to use OSX and problems it has given me over 2 years are endless. This is mainly because I dont just use the machine as a simple PC, but I actually need it to work with different devices / peripherals, to do things other than simple web browsing or word processing or simple video editing. My requirements go beyond that. The problems with wireless USB sticks are most annoying so far. And then there are some annoying aspects of OSX that can make you pull your hair.

The main issue is there are no simple fixes. Its not like Microsoft is perfect, but they learned from their goof ups and actually made their desktop operating environment better with Windows 7.

Apple actually refuses to change some things. Some things are soo obvious, but its their my way or high way mentality that has resulted in certain things continuing to annoy their users for years. The way finder works, the way program behaves and stays running, the way the damn thing keeps adding multiple hardwares each time I plug in USB modem and so on. List is long. But lets not discuss that here in this section.

Its same with iPhone, but to more tolerable extent. And its actually a good phone. But its ecosystem is built on a model which I find unsuitable for my personal use as a primary device.

Fashion sells, trend sells and Apple is good at setting a trend. They successfully make a big deal out of something thats actually not worth much to end user, but you have to give it to them for being able to successfully executing that over last 10 years.

Take example of 4S. Their driving point was Dual core processor and SIRI. I dont really experience much difference in performance between my 1 generation old iPod touch which has A4 chip for most part. And SIRI is useless in India. It simply is not good at handling even the most westernised Indian accents and has diminished capability due to simple fact that we are located in India. But that does not stop Apple fan club from singing its praises.

But its an iconic device with flaws that I know will probably never get fixed in the life cycle of the device I own.

Granted, I am hardcore Android user since it came out, but I am curious enough to actually wanting to experience even the products which are as tied down as iPods or iPhone. Mainly to see whats all the fuzz is about. And like I said, I end up giving Apple a chance every now and then. They may be the richest tech company in the world, but that does not automatically mean they make the best products out there. They dont. But their products are trend setters, a fashion statement and most importantly they market it as something which you should be proud to own or boast about.

Human mind is fascinating thing. We fall pray to something which we know is not always correct, but its how something makes us feel that makes us to buy and love flawed products.

I never said that they are the best products [although for my use, I cant find a better laptop/desktop/mp3 player]. What I'm saying is that those who call their products 'lousy' need to have a re think. It is IMPOSSIBLE for a company to be so successful if they are selling 'lousy' products. Absurd and ludicrous statement IMO.

I like the ipod system so much in fact that I have the app for android which allows me to sync my phone with itunes. Can't use an ipod while riding my bike as I will miss incoming calls.

#Shripad may be you correct on the task killer thing. Haven't used any task killer app. Wonder why people use it. Android version on my SGR handles it smartly.

Actually a bad product can succeed in the market and can be very popular too.Like, Internet Explorer. Its not the best browser out there but it is famous and have a ruled the browser market for long. It doesn't mean it has all negatives. It can boast of being the most secured browser. Reason for chrome evolving in the browser market is, its very fast in loading pages at the same time is the least secured browser.

Although IE,chrome has no relation with iPhone but somewhere one can draw relation and compare the success story.

Sure, and ALL of Apples products are so 'bad' but incredibly do so well in the market.

People are dumb, why would it make me happier.

Because it makes you think you are some sort of genius.

Apple basher=genius

And sir ji,I do know a thing or two about Android.

NEVER EVER used ATK with SGS2.

I am on stock ROM,custom kernel with slight UV.

Very few apps installed...all legit.

The alarm simply forgot to ring at 6am.

BTW,I was able to reproduce it twice..if I have more than 10-15 unread mails in k9,the alarm does not work at times.

For last couple of days I have set up a quiet time between 1&6am,and the alarm is behaving normally.

Smart alarm was disabled by default and I never activated it.
