Well, there is no doubt that Apple has been successfully selling mediocre products though marketing alone. If Microsoft or Google had released the the exact same tablet or phone that Apple did, then they would have flopped utterly. Even the best of technology would flop without appropriate marketing and even the most mediocre stuff can be sold successfully with appropriate marketing. Only a heavily marketing centric company like Apple can afford to push mediocre products and still manage to sell them with great marketing. Most companies are following suit and even otherwise, there is a reason why companies like these only devote 20~30% of their budgets for the technology and innovation and over 60% for marketing.
I know many guy's whose iPads are gathering just simply for the reason that they find no particular reason to use them. So why exactly did they buy one in the first place. Its not because they needed them, its simply because of how they were brilliantly marketed as a magical device. Often people bought them and tried to justify the purchase by trying to find uses for them. As a every day technology user, I do find the need for a portable device like a tablet appropriate, but none of the tablets in the market meet my basic requirements that I need them for and iPad least suitable of them and it is so for a lot of people, but people still buy them due to the way they are marketed as a 'magical device'. People often repeat the marketing manta of iPad being magical, but ask them specify how exactly they use the device and what makes it magical and most people would not be able to put worth a couple of ways that they use it and that makes it magical, but instead they would dumbly repeat the marketing mantra that its just magical. That is what marketing can do.
Just to give another example of how marketing works, just look at Retina Display. LG like many other companies was working on small size high resolution displays for a while and Apple happened to use it in their iPhone 4. Instead of just saying that they use a high res display, they created a marketing buzz word Retina Display and got people hyped about Apple over technology that they had nothing to do with. High res displays are great, but it is nothing special as many companies have been working on demonstrating such high resolution displays. But by attaching a marketing buzz word, they created hype among people half of whom don't even know what DPI means. That is how their marketing works in selling their products.
Here are some of Apple's numbers in context:
PACE
$13.1 billion is Apple's profit in the latest quarter.
Equalled their revenue in Q4 2010-underlining the pace of its growth, despite its size.
A company this big (Apple is world's most valuable) is not supposed to be able to nearly double revenue year-on-year. Nor are they supposed to more than double profit. But Apple did both.
VERSUS MICROSOFT
It was only in October of 2010 when Apple passed Microsoft in terms of revenue. In the latest quarter, its revenue was more than double of Microsoft.
COMPETITION
Apple sold three times as many iPads as Amazon sold Kindle Fires, and at twice the price!
PERIPHERAL IS BIG TOO
The iTunes Store of Apple alone generated 50% more revenue than all of Yahoo did last quarter.
iPHONE = MICROSOFT
The revenues from just iPhone (one product of Apple) is greater than total revenues of Microsoft. And iPhone was launched only in 2007 end.
VERSUS GOOGLE
Apple's profits for last quarter exceed Google's entire revenue for last quarter.
CASH COUNTER
$97.6 billion in cash and equivalents.
$ 64 billion of that is offshore.
Apple's cash hoard alone is worth more than all but 52 companies on Earth.
PROFITABILITY
$13 billion Apple's quarterly profit on $46.33 billion revenue.
WHITE VERSUS BLUE
$108 billion - 35-year-old Apple's revenue at end-FY11.
$106 billion - 100-year-old IBM's revenue at FY11 end.
In 1981, Apple's revenue stood at $ 335 million, while IBM's revenue in the year was $29 billion.
When IBM launched a PC to compete with Apple in 1981, Steve Jobs mocked at IBM with a full page ad in WSJ which said "Welcome, IBM. Seriously"
Does it make you any happier?
Weaker push mail?
I thought I broke my bosses 4s pushmail after an update, but all of a sudden it has started working like a charm.
As a matter of fact gs2 is giving me a lot of headache with emails.
The default email suddenly stopped working.
K9 did not work properly with the corp.mail id,droidmail had started fetching mail with headers of older mails(could be a potential disaster if I was not careful)
Hell! I could not even find a reliable alarm clock in the market.
Think will go back to some old symbian phone...which does these basics perfectly and costs atleast 20k lesser than 4s(which unlike Android gets the basics done perfectly)
Regarding BT FT,yes!it is essential and Apple can implement easily ootb, but they wont do it.It is their arrogance they are proud of(a feat MS will never achieve)...their prime driving force...my way or the highway...and why the hell even they care if their phones are selling in millions(even with such a huge pricetag!)
Sent from Galaxy S2
The Alarm provided on GS2 works fine. Are you on a custom ROM ?
All you guys who say Apple is brilliant at marketing lousy products, just read the article below.
Do you think that a company with lousy products can actually achieve what Apple has managed to do?
http://articles.econ...hone-steve-jobs
I never said that they are the best products [although for my use, I cant find a better laptop/desktop/mp3 player]. What I'm saying is that those who call their products 'lousy' need to have a re think. It is IMPOSSIBLE for a company to be so successful if they are selling 'lousy' products. Absurd and ludicrous statement IMO.
I like the ipod system so much in fact that I have the app for android which allows me to sync my phone with itunes. Can't use an ipod while riding my bike as I will miss incoming calls.
#Shripad may be you correct on the task killer thing. Haven't used any task killer app. Wonder why people use it. Android version on my SGR handles it smartly.![]()
Actually a bad product can succeed in the market and can be very popular too.Like, Internet Explorer. Its not the best browser out there but it is famous and have a ruled the browser market for long. It doesn't mean it has all negatives. It can boast of being the most secured browser. Reason for chrome evolving in the browser market is, its very fast in loading pages at the same time is the least secured browser.
Although IE,chrome has no relation with iPhone but somewhere one can draw relation and compare the success story.
People are dumb, why would it make me happier.
