Samsung and LG dvd writers are the best never go for sony dvd writers.

+1 !!!

sony optical products(drives) have always been nothing but trouble..

there are better brands to choose from @ even better prices !!

LG

Lite-On

Samsung

Regdng ur drive:

try updating its firmware or get it replaced by the sony guys..tell them their repairs were useless!

er, by saying sony writers suck, you are condemning liteon, Benq, NEC and Samsung drives along with them, as sony is usually rebranded writers made by those companies :P

And more importantly, will it do any good to a faulty sensor ..? that seems to be the most important thing here.

whether the problem is a faulty sensor or corrupted firmware , we should be able to find out which after a reflash :)

UPDATE : The OEM firmware

yup, they are OEM pioneers methinks . google for the exact model name to confirm before buying though :)

well my dvd writer sony DRU800 no longer reads dvd or cd that have data:@ ,but its able to play dvd movies,i tried using a philips dvd lens cleaner and it didnt help a bit.:( so any idea whats the problem.

I had the same issue with my Sony DVD writer. Tray problem along with burning cd/dvds . I had burned about 5 DVD's with .iso files and the next thing i see is they are blank... wtf .. after wasting 20 mins (4x) on a DVD just to see it pop out blank... :@
I tried flashing it with all the official firmwares n stuff, but absolutely nogo. I had to buy a SATA DVD writer finally this friday as every troubleshooting step was exhausted. I also tried changing the data cable ... no difference. You might as well check out a professional forum for all the issues regarding CD/DVD drives as well as media.. its Club CD Freaks - Knowledge is Power - Powered by vBulletin

hmm finally :) , so which one did u get and for how much ? i guess from lammy huh ?

aye aye.. i got the same sony but its SATA interface and the build quality is damn good as compared to the earlier one.. its a lightscribe one. No more tray problem.

lol there is nothing like a SONY DVDRW - they are NEC , LITE ON or some other company . and they arent as bad as people think. DVD RW just last 1 - 2 years thats it . thats it about their life. my last sony burnt OVER 150 -200 dvds in about 8 months or so... and it was solid . :D . so there is no point it sucks or it does not. depends on the batch and model u got. u should AHEM research each model u buy , some are very good some arent.

UPDATE : The OEM firmware

Ok.. i did flashed using the s/w named my6win.exe available via the link greenie supplied. It flashed the drive from MY5 to MY6 .. God knows what that means.

After i flashed it, it asked me to reboot so that the changes wd be saved..

did that.

After the booting process, the system notified abt New Hardware detection and installed the drive for usage.

i checked the driver details and they were still the same as earlier : 5.1.2535.0

No improvement with the drive's functionality though .. Same old WHACKO ..

Now what ..??

Greenie.. m gonna kill u .. for breaking this news to me ..

Whats ur address.. i already booked my ticket down south.

Absolutely no hope ??

hey wait , i thought your problem was with the tray :ashamed: for that there is one more remedy i can think of. open the drive and try to clean its innards with a vacuum cleaner :)

if its with the system hanging etc, maybe it could be an OS issue. try it at a friend's place perhaps , and use a different IDE cable.

PS: come on 25th re, you can do it in public with a TE crowd watching :P

Tere ko toh main sms bhej bhej ke marunga .. wait and watch .. :P

Now how will vaccuming the innards gonna help re?

i can open the tray with a sunil shetty Punch .. and then load the dvd in it.

its after that the detection aint there..

As for the hanging part, its only wen i open the windows explorer that the left hand window refuse to show up, only the wallpaper is visible there.. i can use the other programs like mozilla, utorrent with normal ease..

the Sensor is probably an optical one , so if it is dusty or something, it will fail to detect if it has been inserted or not.

like i said, try it at someone else's PC as well :)

forgot to mention.. for a brief period of time , i do get that lil cd icon next to my cursor.. and at times the lil hourglass icon wd pay a visit too.. but nothing happens..

Just changed the IDE cable too .. No Good .. bah ..

Gawd..! I hate Sony ..

Stupid idiots making a mince meat of their reputation.... :@

dont mean to go offtopic or hurt ur feelings.. (:P) but Sony products been plummeting in terms of their performance..

had a bad exp with my music system and got few frnds too whose mch sophesticated systems conked off as soon as the warranty period got over.

i hope my new psp stands the test of times.

agreed. sony does suck, but L-O does not. my last writer , a Sony AD 7190S was bought because it was an OEM liteon :P
