That 450$ price tag is for a locked phone and you wont get the unlock codes for another 6 months atleast, so you cant compare with those locked prices, better compare the European unlocked prices.
Actually, Nokia had to beat the competition in some manner - simply having the best of hardware and software won't win it business. By making it exclusive to AT&T in US and Rogers in Canada, they have managed to get a fantastic $99 contract price which would have been $250-$300 for any top-of-the-line smartphone.
So, people do despise AT&T but $99 is too sweet a deal for the Lumia 920!

^ I'm not really sure but monthly plans aren't fantastic anyways on AT&T right? Do we have really different plans for the lumia 920 as compared to other flagship phones like the iphone and s3? A $200 initial saving is quite eye-catching though.

From what i am reading on slickdeals, one has to buy the phone for the no commitment price of 450$ + tax, call AT&T within 3 days (very important) and cancel the wireless number and tell them you just need the phone. This way you do not have to pay the plan fee (59.99 $) and the one time activation fee (36$) and get to keep the phone. Then call up AT&T and ask for unlock code since you bought the phone for no-commitment price. They would give you unlock code. No need to wait for 6 months.
Comparison of specifications, HTC 8X and Lumia 920: Comparing HTC 8X vs. Nokia Lumia 920 - Seven Reasons for the HTC 8X - VERSUS IO
Nokia Press Release said:*During November, the Nokia Lumia 920 will reach Australia, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Poland, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, the UK, the US and Vietnam.
Turns out India wasn’t supposed to be mentioned in that press release and it was an error. A Nokia India spokesperson has confirmed the same to BGR India and Nokia India will announce the availability details as soon as they freeze on the launch date. We were told by our sources that the phones were currently being tested extensively with all carriers in India to ensure that they don’t face any issues after the launch.
Anybody has idea if Nokia Lumia 920 supports OTG (USB on the go) cable?
I'd say wait until the second week of December. India is probably getting a Christmas launch for the device. You will not only get local warranty for the device but can as well get it for a bargain. I noticed the HTC 8X retailing for <35k in Saholic.
