Yeah, MS Store is still in its infancy. In Steam time limited free released are mentioned quite clearly. MS did goof up during Fallout 4 release though, gave it away for free for a short while in XBox store, then took it away and gave people $10 credit to those who had started playing it. Some people downloaded the game, disconnected from internet, played through FO4 for 100 hours and then reconnected and got $10.

And then play the game without connecting it to internet/steam. IIRC games on steam will play upto 30 days without connecting to the internet.

Checked the Steam sale and the discounts aren't that much. I was hoping of getting the Witcher and MGS V.

The Witcher 3 was on sale just before the Halloween sale. The Thanksgiving sale should start at the end of this month, which is usually much bigger and on par with Winter and Summer sales.

OT here..... So apologies. But are there any 'repack', compressed versions of games that can be downloaded legally to reduce the download size like the *ahem* versions? Steam sales make certain games quite affordable (older ones like Tomb Raider 2013 or Splinter Cell Blacklist), but the download sizes put a serious strain on fup limits.

I doubt there's anything straightforward because I've googled. But if there's any sort of workaround, I'd be glad to know about it. Many thanks.

Unfortunately no. Recently downloaded Gears of War 4, 73gigs, and promptly exhausted my data pack. FUPs are truly the bane of digital distribution.

Got Wolfen and Wolfenstein Old Blood. Sales had some games on good discounts.

The Wolfenstein games have textures from 2004 and the download size is 50gb, what nonsense :\.

If you go sniffing around the file structure 80% of it is uncompressed audio files, mostly sound localisations in various languages.

Game itself is like 41Gb on xbox. But if you want to stream episodes between levels, the episodes alone clocks in at 75Gb. So total size would be 121 gb

This actually depends on the platform you are using.

You can get away with missing files if you have DRM-Free games. You can get away with missing files on DRM like Origin or Battle.NET.

You absolutely can't do that with Steam though.

Just as there are re-mastered versions these days, I was wondering if there are official re-packed versions. Or any way of selectively downloading files that are stripped down versions. For instance, download mp3 audio files instead of lossless. But the responses indicate that developers consider compression (to the maximum extent possible) as largely unneeded.

So only "workaround" is to buy the game on Steam & simply torrent the ripped version from elsewhere, just so I feel satisfied that I purchased the game.

I must confess I'm a bit lost about what you said. I'm a noob when it comes to gaming & digital downloads, so the concept of missing files just went over my head. If you can elaborate, I'll be all ears.
