Reliance Jio Rollout

All the hawks who think due to interconnection issues the calling Jio party will get the AVoID users to switch to Jio need a reality check. The minimum monthly usage of a Jio user has to be 149/-. As we all know we Indian thrive on Jugaad and missed call is probably the number one jugaad invented in the days of Rs 16/min incoming days. Even though the call charges have fallen drastically we still get missed calls from plumbers, electricians, courier guys, gas delivery guys, servant maids, school bus conductors etc.... Basically in order to reach the 100 mn base Jio need to convince these people to switch over to Jio and part with Rs 149 every single month. Mind you, these guys today get by with just recharging Rs 10 or 20 as required. Most of these people will not spend more than Rs 50 in a month in recharges.

Another very big part of the puzzle is convincing them to part with Rs 3,000 for a 4G handset. Do you really expect people who use Rs 10 recharge vouchers to switch to Jio by paying 149 / month and 3K for a phone? Reliance customer service is any legendary for its incompetence.

Jio also realizes that it is not going to reach the 100 mn mark anytime soon. If you note their media briefings they are only saying they aim to acquire 100 mn in the shortest possible time. No timelines.

Actually, there are two problems I see with Jio not able to fully capitalize on their 'courageous' plan (Once Apple says it, all will eventually use it :p )

Firstly, is the interconnect issue. This can however be easily cleared up, since most people will take a Jio number or will port to Jio.

Second is the non FUP. I would have liked them to have FUP on all plans about 500 INR, since we get the same with AVoID group.

Jio beat Apple to courage imo. They had the courage to make all voice calls 'free'.

And the interconnects issue is not easy. The longer AVoId keeps dilly dallying, the more customers will abuse Jio, not them.

And there is no unlimited plan, so where's the question of FUP?[DOUBLEPOST=1473397007][/DOUBLEPOST]@skoka123 The ultra low arpu customers are not the big problem. It's firstly the lack of 4g handsets, and then even less VoLTE handsets, coupled with the fact that if AVoId matches rates, no one would really bother switching. Not to mention dependency on 4g only without a fallback. Heard some rumours of fallback to 3g/2g on RCom but not confirmed. My dual sim only supports 3g/4g on one sim, the other goes to 2g. If I make my other sim 3g/4g the Jio sim goes offline because it's slot is now 2g. How many phones with dual 4G sim slots? The (handset) market is not really ready and mature for proper 4g LTE.

@Julian The ultra low arpu customers are important for the big scheme of things of Jio. They need them to get to 100 mn numbers. I heard from a friend of mine whose brother works for Reliance that Mukesh Ambani was in Hyderabad few weeks ago and set a target of 10 mn subscribers in Telangana. When he was informed that the total population of Telangana is 30 mn he was supposed to have said fine but 10 mn is the target. That is the aggressive push that Jio is after. To make these numbers the low ARPU customers have to be convinced to switch to Jio. Unless Jio gives VoLTE phones at 1K with 1 year free calls and no monthly recharges it is not possible to meet these targets. While it is easy to discard low ARPU customers number do matter. When Jio hits 100 mn subscribers then they get to layout their bigger scheme of things such as Jio Money (pushing PayTM out), JioTV etc.

Do not underestimate the numbers game.

I highly doubt if high ARPU customers would ditch AVoID and switch over to Jio. May be they will have it as a secondary number.

See the thing is if you look at it from a volumes PoV, then low arpu customers will make up the brunt of the 100mn. But if you look at the data plan pricing and the additional packages pricing like 350 bucks for JioTv for example, none of these guys or even the 149 guys would dream of spending that much. And you're right about needing handsets for cheaper but even the 3k+ lyf handsets are crap. So long run, it's all dicey.

I believe now most mobile manufactures here will try to roll out 4g volte handsets as jio has set the bar at at the cheapest volte handsets at 3k . Only 4g handsets people may refrain from buying . Maybe some manufacturers will retrospectively update their 4g handsets via a software update to volte so people continue to buy them . I guess all good for us as consumers .

Update from Kolkata ;

Went for Jio Sim past couple of days - stand in Long Que etc - Neither got the SIM nor able to generate code at my Redmi Note 3 by installing the 'My Jio' App - So yesterday 8/9 visit the store and ask for 'JioFi' and then treated as VIP - Instant handover everything, but they said only insert the SIM next day after 12 AM which is 9/9. So around 12:30 AM boot up the device and instantly get connected - speed hoovering over 35-40 mbps.
Very fast initial 2GB depleted....after that no restriction as of yet.

JioFi though heated up when Data is active though.

Made call STD / Local via Jio4GVoice from 3G phone - No problem So far / No Call Drop.

But my House is Just beside a Reliance Tower Though....

I am not talking of the lower plans, but the higher plans. In AVoID, we have higher plans with a FUP. Jio will be giving the same to only postpaid plans.

Also, will postpaid plans also move to 28 days plan :P

Coming to interconnect issue, no one will abuse them, but people will start using Jio as primary. Even Jio to Jio free calls are better than other networks, who will counter will similar schemes.

As soon as my Jio contact confirms that he can give me SIMs for the entire office, I am getting the same for all - assuming he picks up the phone! @cyberwarfare

I'm looking at the page right now and for a whopping 4999 bucks you get 75gb. Aur kya FUP chahiye ? 75gb khatam, paanch hazaar rupye khatam !

I have users on Vodafone who have used 20-40GB on Vodafone Red/Airtel Solitaire 1599 plan. Else the iPhone data counter is bonkers.

Not sure what you mean. Are you saying that's a lot of data or less? And i'm not sure why you think an FUP is needed. Please elaborate...

How do you where the nearest Reliance JIO tower is?

You mean how to find Jio Wi-Fi Hot Spot.....I believe all major public place such as Airport / Railway Divisional Station / Shopping Mall got it....more will cover. Some major street got it too.

I think those place will be mark as 'Jio Wi-Fi Zone' or such.

I dont want the HotSpots. They can be searched from the My Jio apps also. I am talking about actual physical towers in the nearby location.

Try the apps opensignal and lte discovery. They're not always spot on but sometimes they work.

This.

And, many people who are up to speed are aware of the interconnect issue and AVoID's fault. As far as common man goes most of them will think of it as a Jio service problem.

Plus, given the amount of questions people have about getting a sim or activation, it sure is not easy. Back in May it took minimum 1 day and up to 7 days to start using the sim. Stores had trouble uploading docs because of server down issues, in this day and age. Fast forward 4 months, still the same issue. Though they have made it easier by having token system to manage the loads on the server and even introducing Aadhar based system. But the process still remains as confusing as ever. I don't think people have that much patience if it was not a free usage sim, but they wouldn't stand this for a primary number.

If Jio doesn't solve
1) sim availability
2) sim activation
3) interconnect

issues soon then I think people will loose interest from their services, no matter even if it's free. I heard people saying about jio sim "pehle to milta nahi, milta hai to chalta nahi" translation "First It's hard to get a sim, and even if you get then it doesn't work"
