The Aam Admi Party

If people would just watch the video, I would have to type a lot less. :D
I'm sceptical because he has to defend the party line. Where is the objective take here.

Anyways, in other countries, the middlemen has been replaced by the "super" middlemen i.e. retailers like Walmart. He gave the example of UK, where around 65% of the market is controlled by only 4 retailers. When farmers have to sell, they have no choice but to sell to them. When you have to buy, you have no choice but to buy from them. In the end, you have an oligopoly.
But the supply chain, the local one becomes much more efficient. In India, 85% of plots are 5 acres or less. is there any way these farmers could join up and farm bigger plots. They'd save on resources as farm hands are difficult to come by nowadays. What is the % of people involved in agriculture in India compared to abroad ? I see figures like 50% whereas its less than 5% elsewhere. if there is a glut of produce in one part of the country then its not feasible to transport it over to another where there is a shortage. Most produce is consumed locally very little goes elsewhere.

Its takes a lot of money to make big guys, so there will only be a few that can do it. So what if 65% is controlled by 4. That means there are 3 competitors for every transaction. Still 35% isn't controlled by them. This is not an oligopoly which would have a larger share.

For all the talk about middlemen i pay as much if not more to buy from farmer cooperatives as i do in the open market. There is no middleman involved yet the prices are still the same. And there is no quality control, the farmers sell by the crate and their stores have to buy as is.

He said how this is different from say a Reliance mart or Big Bazaar. Walmart is an international retailer with an international supply chain. Our "supermarkets" still purchase most of the stuff from Indian sellers. It will not be the same for India as it is not the same for the USA or any other developed countries.
FDI law passed stipulates that 20-30% has to be sourced locally. plus they need to invest in back end infrastructure. These are huge expenses, when do these chains actually get to see a profit. 5 years later, longer? I've read they can go ten years without a profit though i doubt it.

It helped China create manufacturing as they stocked mainly Chinese goods in the Chinese Walmarts. It also helped China because they made China their global supply hub, apart from creating lot of retail jobs. All in all, a win-win situation for China.
China was able to capitalise on mass production. I don't know if its too late for us to get on this train or not. Chinese prices will not remain cheap forever, prices will rise as their standard of living improves. When that happens they are going to want to cut their costs. Are we going to welcome them or not. Will we be ready for it or not.

Bottomline : In 2002 we were not ready for FDI in retail. ten years later we are still not ready. How much longer will it take. To put things in perspective its up to the states how they implement FDI in retail. Some will and others won't. Just because Delhi isn't going to have it does not mean the rest of the country will also lose out. But some states have to take the initiative and when i read about opposition i have a hunch it will be successful. There will be winners & losers as happens all the time.

You know what I am in furniture business and I know the ground reality of the trade. What he pointed out was in sync with what is happening right now with this business.

You might not agree with BJP as a party but what he said was in favour of the country in whichsoever way you look at it i.e. (Being a manufacturer, middle man or an end user).

You made it sound like as if Jaitley's single-handedly won you over. I've watched the entire video and don't agree about certain things.
Or that you are unable to read properly - "I did watch the video and my belief in BJP is even more stronger now(though this is an AAP thread)." Not sure which dictionary you read - to me it seems like a case of re-affirming their faith not finding faith as you put it. Is the TGIF effect and nothing better to do over the weekend?

Its not about weather FDI is good or bad. Its good if we have our own manufacturing sector to back it up. Whats happening in our country right now is that rich is becoming richer while poor is just about managing to stay afloat but in the hindsight the money is still in India and Major chunk of it would be spent here only.

As soon as the FDI in retail enters in India the money will start going out of the country. And being the state our economic condition we are in it would take some time(15-20 years) to come up with a solution for that. It takes time to build power plants which can supply cheap power. We are comparing FDI implications in China. The fact of the matter is that India's total power requirement is less then what China produces as extra power. The smallest manufacturing unit in China employees about 5000+ people. There are only handful of such units in India. We need to do a reality check. We can only compete with China if our backs are strong. They aren't right now but FDI will only weaken it rather then strengthening it.

I agree. The time is not yet right for FDI in retail. Instead we need more FDI in industries and manufacturing sector right now than retail. And the most important part which no one talks about, if you really wanna see development, is strict adherence to minimum wages.

Somebody talked about more FDI in industries/Manufacturing sector, No individual or company will be willing to invest in india because of our Labour Laws. You cannot have a "capitalist" country with communist/socialist mindset. One of the main reasons why IT is being outsourced to India apart from Low cost is that the Industry does not follow the traditional labour laws. No company will be ready to play "mother Teresa", we got to realize it and change some points in our Laws.

Lets see, these foreign women were accused of prostitution and drug trade without any evidence whatsoever, dragged from their houses, abused, forced to go though strip searches and medical tests and this was not even by police. The law minister and his AAP goons take matters into their own hands because the police refused to act without evidence.

I bet the very people who spared no expense criticizing the Americans about the way they went about arresting the suspect Devayani just as they would any other criminal and applauding the revenge tactics used by Indian Govt afterwards would never criticize the way these foreigners were treated in India.

Like said earlier Intention MAY be right but way of Implementation IS wrong. You cannot hold country/administration/law on ransom by staging dharnas for what ever you want done. Most of AAP Ministers err sevaks are on My Way or Highway motto.

It is Xenophobia, plus revenge culture. Anyone who looks different from us is treated in a vomit-inducing way, whether they are Caucasian whites or African blacks. It's just that fair skin is considered good, and dark skin is considered bad. So, the treatment depends on what colour the skin is too. Nationalism is brainwashed into our skulls since childhood.

Just thinking about the hypocritical Indian culture makes my head spin. There are so many good aspects that we can take forward and leave everything else behind, but no, the culture has to be protected at all costs.

And what is this dharna for? It is to demand dismissal of policemen who refused to play ball when one of the ministers asked them to do something that was patently against the law. Of course, we all want crime and prostitution and drug trafficking to be eliminated and would love it for the police to be involved in reducing these ills, and not aid those who indulge in it, which, unfortunately is often the case. But can I still ask the police to do things that are unlawful? How can I, as a minister, force the police to go against the law? It is not only wrong, it actually muddies the already muddied system even more.

Now they say they will disrupt the Republic Day Parade with a dharna.

That is being disrespectful to the whole of the nation.

he continues to do U- turns.
before the dharna , he said people please do not participate in the dharna.
At the dharna, says people should come to the dharna.

also about justifying the vigilante act of the law minister, he claims he got a letter from the uganda high commission congratulating for the effort in arresting the ladies at night.
if anybody has seen the letter, check the date posted, it is from june 2013, much before the actual event and had no relation to the act by the law minister.

That letter pretty much sums up the farce that AAP is. What Somnath Bharathi and his goons indulged in can be described as nothing but sexual harassment and public humiliation. There was nothing legitimate about it. Its a major offence and one that should be punished severely. This so called farce of a protest is a pre-emptive strike by AAP to save face.

But looking the way Kejriwal so stupidly produced a letter dated an year ago and claiming that people who did not exist in Delhi thanked him personally, he is just proving that maybe even Rahul Gandhi is not as retarded as he is.

This looks like Chinese propaganda against the Japanese prime minister who is the chief guest on Republic Day.
