The new Ryzen 9 3950X will top the stack of new Zen 2 based AMD consumer processors, and is built for the AM4 socket along with the range of X570 motherboards. It will have 16 cores with simultaneous multi-threading, enabling 32 threads, with a base frequency of 3.5 GHz and a turbo frequency of 4.7 GHz. All of this will be provided in a 105W TDP.

AMD has said that the processor will be coming in September 2019, about two months after the initial Ryzen 3rd Gen processors, due to extra validation requirements. The chip uses two of the Zen 2 eight-core chiplets, paired with an IO die that provides 24 total PCIe 4.0 lanes. By using the AM4 socket, AMD recommends pairing the Ryzen 9 3950X with one of the new X570 motherboards launched at Computex.

The Ryzen 3000 series will debut a new product tier for AMD: Ryzen 9. In this case, the Ryzen 9 3900X will be AMD’s first mainstream desktop 12-core processor. The processor is the only one of the group that uses two chiplets, in a 6+6 configuration. The 3900X will have a base frequency of 3.8 GHz, a turbo frequency of 4.6 GHz, and line up with 6 MB of L2 cache and 64 MB of L3 cache. This confirms that each chiplet has 32 MB of L3 cache, doubling what we saw on the first generation of the Zen microarchitecture. This CPU has a TDP of 105W, which for AMD processors is usually a good measure of all-core power consumption, and will be enabled with 24 PCIe 4.0 lanes (16 for GPU, 4 for storage, 4 for the chipset)

The Ryzen 9 3900X will have a suggested e-tail price of $499, and it will come with a cooler (more details in the coming weeks). AMD compared this processor in its presentations to Intel’s 12-core HEDT processor, the Core i9-9920X, which has an MSRP of $1199 and doesn’t come with a cooler.

I'll wait for a 16 core which is around 65 watts so that may take a couple more years - current one might be 125w or so.

I went from 4 core i5-6500 cpu at 65w and 14nm to 8 core ryzen 1700 at 65w and 14nm in the space of a couple of years, was hoping they could manage 16 cores in 65w now but looks like the fresh 7 nm process is not as efficient as it can be.[DOUBLEPOST=1558953456][/DOUBLEPOST]From the anandtech article:

The Ryzen 9 3900X is the new mainstream desktop flagship, although AMD clearly has enough headroom on this design to enable a full 16 cores. Most users will expect this to come in the future, so it will be interesting to see if AMD will strategically play this card.

16 cores in 65W will be impossible in the next 2-3 years. The top consumer grade Intel CPUs like the 9900K eat up 200+ Watts alone with 6 cores.
The 16 core Zen 2 is rumoured to consume some 300W as per GamersNexus.
Check out the buildzoid VRM analysis on X570 boards and that VRM amperage rating and 12 phase design is gnarly AF.

If you think in the long term then theres not much headroom left below 7 nm. Yes they might do a lot of innovative EUV lithography but power consumption reduction by 4 times (again keeping in mind we're at 7 nm already) within 2-3 years is a long shot.

I am looking at the 105W 12 core R9 3900X to replace my stock R7 1700. Hopefully my Noctua NH-U12S with 2x NF-F12 2000 rpm fans is upto the task and the price is in the vicinity of 40k Already updated the BIOS on my Asus Crosshair VI Hero(X370) for the same.

Intel is going to have a shit time for the next 2 years at least. But there's a silver lining there-
Intel warned that CPU shortages will worsen in the coming months. Hopefully with Zen 2 selling like hot cakes Intel's demand will go down solving their supply crisis. :p[DOUBLEPOST=1558976262][/DOUBLEPOST]

Wait for the reviews first. The Ryzen CPUs will start selling on July 7 and reviews should be up before that

Threadripper 1920X and 1950X have TDP of 180W and power consumption on load in tests is 176-177W.

3900X has a TDP of 105W. So, I expect the 16 core part to have similar specs.

I expect that Threadripper line up will be killed off altogether in favor of 8-16 core parts that work on the regular Ryzen platform.
 
Disappointing that 3900X is not a 16 core part. Not a big enough of a jump over my 2700X.
They're holding back the 16 core to counter Intel's 10 core reply which is bound to come out soon.
Moreover all 8 core chiplets are eaten up by demand for the Epyc line of server CPUs which are getting a ton of design wins now.

AMD is now facing the problem of skyhigh expectations from us after all these AdoredTV leaks.
If Zen 1 didn't come out and upset the apple cart then we would be still stuck on 4 cores on 14++++++++++++ nm or some other rebadged crap till 2025 or so.

Seems like the 16 core can do 4.1 Ghz all core OC on water as a daily driver.

Keep in mind though that the 16 core part may be an engineering sample which are almost always nerfed to hide the actual specs.

But the 3700X is going to topple the 9900K most probably at a much cheaper price of 329 USD vs 500 USD.

And funnily the 500 USD R9 3900X is fighting it out with the i9-9920X which is a whopping 1200 USD chip.

They should have just called the 3700x as the 3700 and the 3800x as the 3700x..
Else what could they have planned for the 3700 and the 3800 in the future? Since as per the specs the only difference I can see is slightly higher clock speeds and TDP..
Threadripper will have the 16 cores and come for 699$
 
You are still running the Asus C6H right? Which Zen 2 CPU are you looking at?
Yep if I buy, I'll get the 12 core. Since the board is old, there's not much overclocking potential.

BTW did you update the BIOS to 7002?
I got into a soup with that.
On the first try I updated the BIOS via EZUpdate from UEFI and then the PC always got stuck in the select BIOS file UEFI screen on every subsequent boot.
Tried BIOS flashback a number of times and it didn't work. Finally worked it out that you have to have only the 7002 BIOS file and nothing else in the USB drive for Flashback to work and the USB drive needs to use MBR definition and not GPT.
