The Photography Thread !

I have a trip planned to Leh for a few months now. The departure date is on the 18th. Due to the unfortunate circumstances, the plan might get canned. We will take a call towards the end of the week. Anyhow, I was looking to learn a few techniques before I left. Even if I don't end up going, there's no harm in learning.

The equipment I'm planning to carry is a D90 with 18-105 lens and an 11-16 f2.8 lens. I will also keep a tripod, spare battery and extra memory.

What I want to learn is:

Star trails

Good Landscapes and panoramas

Skies

HDR

I do know the basics, but I don't know things like the appropriate aperture for star trails..

All the best for your trip. That tokina 11-16 is one heck of a lens, but make sure you carry a good quality CPL if you want some nice skies. As far as the HDR goes, I follow the method listed at Stuck In Customs HDR Photography . I have never done star trails, so have no clue about it. But there's a way of finding out the axis and other stuff, may be a google search might help. As far as the aperture goes, at 11mm, f5.6-8 should be good, as that will be the hyperfocal distance I guess (Guessing, because at 18mm f3.5, hyperfocal distance is about 5ft).

I agree. There was a line that I read somewhere which said "Painting is all about addition of elements, and Photography is all about subtraction". And it becomes even more apt for UWAs. The funny thing that I did was that even at 11mm, I was moving back and forth to get the right composition instead of zooming in or out. Guess, I am too used to prime lenses :D.

As told, a CPL is must for beautiful skies...

also, sometimes people do use GND too to get proper details of sky and ground..

about HDR, I would had personally preferred Exposure blending than HDR in case of landscapes.. (caution : i m not a big time landscaper)

also, when someone talks about HDR, I try my best to spread one thing -

HDR doesn't mean making surreal photos.. also, HDR is only needed when the scene has more dynamic range than your camera can record...

so please take care when you really need an HDR.. all scenes dont need HDR (indeed many could be done through exposure blending or GND)

Some where read -

Rule 1 # A good HDR should never look like and HDR..

Rule 2 # if it looks like a HDR refer to rule 1

And why is that? AFAIK, CPL will help you really bring out the skies and increase the saturation to some extent.

what happens is, since it is angle dependent, the color of the sky will change from one side of the picture to the other, because of the 90deg. field of view since the angle with respect to the sunlight changes of something like that :)

Anyways, it will still do more good than harm.

@vb86:you better cancel your trip if your main purpose is photography and enjoyment .Don't except them to treat you as guest or tourist .People there are dependant on army for food + water and other necessity.I know their major earning is from tourists only ,but I really don't see the point in risking life unless you're ready to help them as volunteer .

@regarding CPL :its not recommended to use CPL for landscaping because of uneven polarisation ,but its good for getting rid of relections .

Love the wider angle shots, Stuge!

I, for one, use my CPL Filter every chance I get - on my Sigma 10-20 and 50mm f/1.4.

Rented one of my dream lenses for a visit to eastern Washington - a Canon 70-200 f/2.8. Fantastic lens! Not sure if I a used my CPL for this.
