The Raspberry Pi Thread

Old is very very overpriced and many don't post config ... Mostly scammers and money grabbers... That is sad reality in india
to a extent that is true but then same is going on in eu and us,hp sff mini pcs are being overpriced in eu/us as well. problem with pi is a single pi cannot run firewall+nextcloud+omv+pihole etc on a single machine due to port conflicts and all sort of problems one can always dockerize but that adds complexity and often problems in my experience docker is great but often time conflicts are a pain to deal. So in a ideal situation where one is running firewall+nas software+pihole+personal cloud people often use 2 pi 4 which total out to 8k + adapters + cases. instead a hp/lenovo/dell sff pc with a i5/8gig ram/ssd or hdd costs the same and the processors are way more powerful. Plus lot of good firewall softwares dont exist for pi. only advantage with pi is the warranty. if someone is able to build a pc with a a athlon for cheap around 10k using cheap psu's etc then that works out okay instead of sff.

Thanks man. This is one of the thing I wanted to know.

Again, this roughly translates to 3GB per file right. I want to understand if 20GB file plays without buffer and what all would be the bottlenecks for it.
Resurrecting an old discussion. I used Pi as NAS for quite a while with Seagate Hub external HDD (powered). Pi was on LAN, TV on Wi-Fi. I used to play content locally on TV using Kodi, played quite a few 4k movies, no problem ever. The problem was on my TV's side, if ever.

Funny thing is, I now have a Synology NAS and use that same Raspberry Pi with LibreELEC to play movies because my TV was not able to decode Dolby surround audio.

My TV can decode Dolby and DTS. So I shouldn't have any problem in that. All I wanted to understand was that if big size 4K plays without any buffering and I guess it does play well. Have to spend some (& budget) sometime during the holidays for this project.

Yes, you can totally rely on this solution. Pi4 has USB 3.0 ports, so read speed is not a bottleneck. When I had this setup, my router only did 100 mbps, even then I didn't face any issue. But I'd definitely recommend a Gigabit router in case you're getting a new one. They aren't all that expensive, are available under 2k. But if you already have a router, even 100 mbps should be ok. Make sure you connect the Pi using a cable and not over Wi-fi. When I had it connected with Wi-fi, the streaming was not at all stable.

You can check Robu.in for Raspberry Pi. When I bought, some components were cheaper on Robu as compared to Thingbits. I'll also recommend getting the official power supply. Other than that, you'll need a memory card, heat sink, and a case with fan. The Pi4 easily goes up to 70 degrees in Indian heat, so it's not good for its long term health to run without fan.

For hard disk, I'd recommend getting something externally powered. Though the Pi can power a 2.5" hard drive, it just adds to the load on its circuitry. So better to avoid that.

Thanks man, btw which Pi model, heat sink and case are you using now?

Raspberry Pi is Pi4 4GB version. Heat sink is generic one from Robu itself. Case I'm still looking for. I have ordered 3 cases and 3 fans and I find all of them noisy. So as of now my pi is just lying naked with the Fan cooling it from the side like a table fan :P

Cool, What is the max video file size that you've played with this setup? My 4k movies are like 15-20Gb each.

Please look at the case which was suggested to me by Marcus Fenix . It is awesome and keeps Pi super cool. Even in this October heat of Mumbai, my pi is under 52 degrees and it runs 24 hours with external hdd connected.

Don't recall exactly as it's been about 9 months since I last used this setup, but definitely played a few large size 4k movies without any issues.

My Pi is currently running at 47°, in Mumbai, on since morning. Temperature is not the problem, noise is. When the fan runs in a small space, it produces an annoying buzzing sound which I don't like.

Yep. Tried those tinny fans and they were annoying as f**k. Furthermore I am not keen on having moving parts on a Pi which will fail for sure keeping in mind that these fans aren't Noctuas. :P

Check this post for the passive case-

Try getting a passive heatsink. I have been using this for the last 5 months and so far it is running quite cool. Last week one of the fans started making some noise due to some dust or something. Blew some air, cleaned the fins and put some WD 40 in it. Running silent since. Pi runs around 47 - 50 *c. Running Ubuntu Mate (Unofficial) with an overclock to 2 GHz on CPU and 700 MHz on GPU. I mainly use it as a NAS + PiHole and some privacy bits with a Seagate 1.5TB external drive. Even without the fans it runs quite cool though the case itself gets warm to the touch. Also I am based in Mumbai, so yeah these temps are to be expected. If you have trouble with the fans, a small splash of WD 40 should definitely fix them.

An issue I observed today. Was downloading a 15GB torrent and after torrent starts actual downloading, in 30-40 seconds, qbittorrent would crash and then once it is restarted, the torrent would go In "Stalled" status after rechecking and then pause and unpause it to start it again and cycle repeats.

Then I restarted entire Raspberry pi and after that the torrent works fine.

Any idea why that was happening before?

Not sure about this particular issue, but I have tried a couple of torrent clients on RPi and found Transmission to be the most stable. If you're not able to find a fix for this, you can try switching to Transmission.

Also make sure your firewall is not blocking something, in case you have enabled it. You might need to allow the relevant ports.

+1 for the passive heatsink case. I was running the pibox case with fan but had to relube it 2-3 times because it starts making noise after 2-3 months. The passive heatsink case has fan but i have not connected it. Temps 52-54°c with pihole, qbittorrent and omv running

Kinna puzzled
My rpi 4 has dietpi installed and sm using just pihole on it.. But every second or third day, the internet is killed as the installation becomes unreachable so I have to remove the pihole ip from the dns on my router.

Have to hats restart the pi and it takes may be an hour or two to come back online.

Any ideas, this is the reason I haven't installed anything else on the pi...

For those who are interested in TV Shows

Works great on RPi too and can be installed as Container too

Any idea how it compares to Sonarr? I use Sonarr right now with Jackett and satisfied with the setup.
